Texans Offensive Line

It will be great if we can sign a couple of quality linemen. And there's the draft. It seems that our ability to assess OL talent sucks. In any event, it might make sense to trade down again with our #1 pick in order to obtain another 2nd-round pick and then take two guards with our two #2 picks.
Why would you want them to spend two more high draft picks on OL if their ability to assess talent sucks? You want more busts? Building a statuary?

Very fair question. My personal preference is that they sign a couple and then use their #1 on a WR or a DT.

Before I forget, losing George Fant was a mistake. I was disappointed and surprised when Nick let George get away.

You think defensive tackle is our number one priority?

I’ve been extremely disappointed with Tunsil, Howard, and Mason. Caserio should cut his losses when possible. Howard and Mason after June 1st in 2025. Tunsil can go after June 1st 2026. I don’t think the Texans could much for any of these three in a trade so why bother.

It’s nice to see the Notre Dame duo (Patterson & Fisher) stepping up to be the Texans best current hope for building a future OL around. It would be nice if Scruggs had an outstanding off-season and came into 2025 looking like the OL he could’ve been.

Patterson is struggling imo.

Mason is struggling. Tunsil & Howard have been playing the Tackle position very well. Well enough to keep because the guy you replace them with most likely won't play as well (I think Fisher is doing a good job, but it's not guarantee he'll play as consistently good as Howard has at Tackle).

The Tackles have been the only decent part of our line all season.

If we can sign TWO quality interior lineman then I believe our next priority Isa receiver and DT via the draft.

What do you think?
The next two games are going to firm up my thoughts. If Titus Howard continues as he has at left guard, I can see him being the starter there in 2025 with Fisher replacing him at right tackle. I want Howard gone but not what I see happening. I do understand the concern that Fisher may not be ready but I think he will be.

Need 1. Wr we need two but another day 3.
Need 2 safety
Need 3 corner
Need 4 offensive guard hopefully to start right guard ; replaces Mason at some point.
Need 5 running back.
I see several players that can fill these needs .

Nick trades 1.20 to LVR for their round two and both round threes.

2a Wr Trey Harris I think he could possibly be the best wide receiver in the draft and has great comparisons including Brian Thomas, Odunze and Drake London.

2b Jahdae Barron CB/safety/subpackage LB and Nickleback day one starter if needed at any of these positions.

3a DT/nose Alfred Collins not a priority but a need and man is he good!

3b LT/OG Charles Grant replaces Mason during season but LT in future. 98 PB and RB.

3c Edge/DL Jordan Burch 8.5 sacks 6 passes broken up. Could be a JJ Watt type.

4 OC Jake Majors may be better than Patterson and calls line plays for the Longhorns.

5. RB Dylan Sampson workhorse and clean injury history despite his load. Amazing stats.

6. No pick.. yet
7. Wr/returner Barion Brown dude is crazy fast with good routes and separation. My version of Isaiah Bond.

If this was the course of action; I’m simply going to give Colts All Pro Center the money he needs to change teams as an UFA. This gives me the feeling, there would be a fighting chance going into next season…and CJ could feel strong enough to regain his confidence. This OL could look like this:

LT- Tunsil
LG- Howard
OC- Ryan Kelly
RG- Patterson
RT- Fisher

I believe, Kelly could QB and be the new leader of this OL.

This also allows the Texans to pick up another developmental OT later in the draft.

You know i wasn't with you on getting Kelly, but i've changed my tune. Everything that can be done needs to be done to get this line shored up for next year. Don't think Patterson is a fit at guard tho. Nor Howard at guard.

While there is a discussion of shuffling existing players, I see a 1st round pick going to the best available OT or get the best guard Tyler Booker from Alabama. That would be a piece for the future that produces day one. As mentioned in another post we could look to trade Tunsil or Howard if we go OT in first round. Oh yes and a credited new OL coach!

If you are going to cut or trade Howard, it needs to be with a post June 1st designation or a post June 1st trade or the dead money will be huge.

yes it should be done before the draft with a 1st for Tunsil and 3rd for Howard without giving them away.

Just to clarify, if you trade Howard before draft; savings is less than $4 million with dead money already guaranteed to him at $19.3 million. I am not saying do not do that as a third round pick especially higher [Bears 71 ish] could be very good. However, if you have a chance at free agent Trey Smith, 14.2 million designating Howard as a post June 1 would go a long ways towards Smith.

I also think it would be difficult to get a round one pick for Tunsil. Not saying he is not worth that, I just think those teams needing a left tackle will address it in the draft.

Trade our 1.19 to LVR for their round two and both 3s.
Howard cut and adding to the $14 million savings to get OG Smith.

They may have every intention of keeping Howard at Guard.
And for what Howard is getting paid he better enjoy it! I get tired of hearing stories of how he doesn’t want to play guard and Slowik is thanking him in press conferences. The OL sucks, you are part of it and getting paid very well. Do what is best for the team.

Seth Payne said it best: Bruce Mathews and Larry Allen never complained about playing any position on the OL. They just dominated wherever they were told to line up.

IMO, to start to fixing the OL for next year, the team needs to decide on the offensive coordinator first whether it's Slo or someone else. Then find a new o-line coach who understands what the offense is based on and has a good track record. I'd like to see that solidified before chiming in on potential player changes.

Coach and scheme is important. Having Warhop/Hamilton in the gap scheme made the Texans choose Kenyon Green instead of a 10 year starter at center (in a zone scheme) in Linderbaum.

As of last week PFF rated our line #28 in the league, FWIW. From PFF:

28. Houston Texans (No change)

Projected Week 18 starters:

LT Laremy Tunsil
LG Tytus Howard
C Jarrett Patterson
RG Kendrick Green
RT Blake Fisher

Right guard Shaq Mason was inactive for Houston’s Week 17 game against Baltimore and was replaced by Kendrick Green, whose 71.7 PFF run-blocking grade paced the Texans' offensive linemen.

Houston's offensive line gave up 12 pressures — including three sacks — on 38 pass plays in the loss to the Ravens, leading to a 26th-ranked 80.3 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating.

Best player: Laremy Tunsil

Tunsil did not allow a single pressure against Baltimore, and his resulting 90.9 PFF pass-blocking grade led all offensive linemen in Week 17.

I was surprised that Scruggs was at Right Guard rather than Kendrick green

I think most of us are ready to see offensive line coach Strausser go. Any thoughts on the Texans Longhorn offensive line coach and offensive coordinator coming here to replace Strausser? I know the Longhorns are averaging around 34 points a game. I am not advocating for him to be offensive coordinator.
