Fair enough. I could have worded it differently. They both struggled to win games and play consistently.I don't think Mayfield or Murray struggled coming out of college. Mayfield had one of the better rookie QB seasons in recent memory. Murray was the ROY then a Pro Bowler in his 2nd year. Things have turned for both of them. I just don't think that lays at the feet of Lincoln Riley. Riley coaches a college offense, sure. So do the other college coaches.
Murray, just like every year he has played, struggled in the second half of his rookie year. Last 6-7 games he threw for more than 200 yards once I think and had as many INTs as TDs.
Mayfield balled out his rookie year going 6-7, but in 2019 (Murray's rookie year) he was 6-10 and had 21 INT's which didn't lead the league only because we had the Jameis Winston 30:30 year. And he faded badly down the stretch much like Murray did.
All that to say, there may have been some recency effect in the 2020 draft after such bad 2019 second half of year performances by Mayfield and Murray. Call it guilty by association? Maybe.
