Our NFL LIVE Midseason Defensive Player of the Year goes to @HoustonTexans J.J. Watt.
NFL Media's Elliot Harrison explains why Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt reminds him of a combination of former NFL greats Bob Lilly and Reggie White.
No way JJ is worthy of consideration as the leagues MVP.
Very lucid persuasive argument.
One of the arguments I made for not giving JJ the bank this past year (besides not needing to this soon) was that we might need that cap space if some outstanding QB propect emerged this upcoming offseason and voila, look who appeared on the scene last night and is currently on a single-season conract with the Eagles and will probably hit the open market in a couple months. OK he'll probably flame out in the next couple weeks, but who really knows at this point ?

I have only paid top dollar for an authentic Texans jersey twice. I bought a white AJ jersey, and a Red Cushing jersey. I just have a hard time committing that much cash towards a piece of clothing. I have some pretty good bootlegs though. However, JJ is just that damn cool that I just ordered an authentic White #99.
Fit: Nike Elite Jerseys are constructed of heavier-weight materials for on-field durability, and they do not fit or feel like a T-shirt.
For $300 I wouldn't think that would even need to be said. That's pretty my my annual clothing budget.

Since Watt entered league in 2011 Texans are first with 394 QB hits. Opponents completion percentage of 56.5 is league's lowest.
The Texans badly need a QB.
Are you really questioning the necessary warnings for folks who will plunk down $300 for the word "official"?
I'm surprised it doesn't come with a disclaimer - "the wearing of this shirt will not make you into nor make you look like a football player if you aren't one already. "
No way JJ is worthy of consideration as the leagues MVP. OK it you want some
kind of reward or honor for the leagues Best-Player, maybe you can make that argument, I dunno, but not MVP.
This statement is deeper than it appears on the surface.
Is the MVP the best player in the league (then that's J.J. hands down, IMHO) or the one that, had this player not been on his team, that team would have sucked. Okay, not "sucked" but wouldn't have had the success that it had. Can a 4-5 team even have an MVP candidate?
First, the Texans must garner some success; a 4-5 record (so far) ain't gonna get it.
Second, J.J. Watt must be the keystone player in that success. And, right now, I'd say that player is Arian Foster. The wins we have are on the back of Arian's performances. Yeah, J.J. made some highlight reel plays. But if Foster doesn't do what he did, we would have lost those games anyway. So at a minimum, they're neck & neck for Texans' MVP.
What you're really saying, whether you realize it or not, is no defensive player can ever again be MVP. Because the truth is, they've legislated out defensive play, for the most part. A team's success is ALWAYS going to hinge more on offensive players, in particularly QBs. So the MVP award is becoming meaningless.
First off I'm not even willing to concede that JJ is the most valuable defensive player in the league, but he's certainly not the "most valuable" overall player in the NFL since he's not a QB. I mean are you willing to say you wouldn't trade JJ for any other player in the NFL ? I can think of several who I would. This statement is deeper than it appears on the surface.

Now is he the "best", like in the most talented or most highly skilled or whatever ? Different argument, but I can also make an argument that he's not that either.
Just for shiggles, who would you consider a more valuable asset to any team's defense than J.J.?
Suh, Peterson, Kuechly, Miller, Thomas, Haden ... ?
Out of a number of other great defensive players out there I can't think of one that I hear about more game planned for than him.
People who get paid to make those judgments disagree.First off I'm not even willing to concede that JJ is the most valuable defensive player in the league...
Yes, several of those guys are among a group of defense players that I would say would be in the conversation (along with JJ), as the top defensive player in the league. I just don't think JJ stands "head and shoulders" above the whole group, it's debatable as to who's the best/MVDP IMO.
How so ?People who get paid to make those judgments disagree.
How so ?
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Judy Battista: J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans. Why even pretend this is a contest? Watt buries this award as easily as he does opposing quarterbacks.
Brian Billick: Watt. He's the most disruptive player in the NFL, period. He does everything right -- except for dancing.
Gil Brandt: Watt. Watt -- who has three touchdowns and seven sacks -- requires double- and triple-teaming by the Texans' opponents. He's a big reason why Houston has four wins.
Bucky Brooks: Watt. Based on his sensational performance and production over the first half, Watt is also a viable MVP candidate.
Charley Casserly: Watt. Is there any question here?
Dave Dameshek: Watt. I don't need to explain this, right?
Elliot Harrison: Watt. He has so much going for him right now that I would be shocked if he doesn't win this award. He already leads the NFL in pressures, and now he's got Jadeveon Clowney back.
Adam Schein: Watt. It's J.J. Watt's world.
Michael Silver: Watt. When he's not terrorizing opponents, he's clowning them. (Yes, Zach Mettenberger, I'm talking to YOU.)
We're 4-5..... & regularly give up 30 points. DPOY?
Really?
Watch the games?
Really?
I f'king hate this supposed logic - "if he was that good, they'd be #1." BS. There are 11 guys on defense and the defense is affected by the offense. Put the best player of all time on D on the field with 10 scrubs and bad coaching and you have a bad D. Doesn't mean he isn't the best D player of all time. Individual excellence is not defined by team performance.
And we give up 21.9 ppg.
I f*king hate dumb motherf*kers who think they own sht.
I never said anything about being #1, only that I doubt the defensive player of the year will be on a team with a losing record, same as the league MVP.
We've played 9 games, gave up 30 points in 4 of them, three of the last four. That could be considered regularity, which is what I said... nothing, not a damn thing about average score.
We're 4-5..... & regularly give up 30 points. DPOY?

So wade says half the staff didn't want watt he said his side won and the went with him.

lol @ anyone who doesn't think JJ Watt is *AT LEAST* Defensive Player of the Year.
****in' clown show.

Where'd you hear this one?
JL: You mentioned you’ve been watching a lot of college football this year. You and your father were part of picking Rickey Jackson in the second round of the 1981 Draft. You were part of the group that identified Steve Atwater as a first round pick in Denver, and obviously JJ Watt a few years ago in Houston. What was your role in evaluating those players in the Draft process?
WP: With players, you give your opinion and then whoever’s in charge of the Draft decides how good your opinion is. With Rickey, my Dad sent me up to watch him and Hugh Green at Pittsburgh, and we obviously ended up picking him. With JJ, half the group didn’t want him and half the group did. Our side won, and it turned out great.
RG: What did you see on Watt’s film from Wisconsin that made you want him on your team?
WP: A few of us stood up strongly for him at 11th overall - there was some dissent - but I don’t think any of us thought at the time that he’d be the dominant player that he’s been. We thought he was gonna be good. What we saw is that he had a great feel for where the football was. He had more pass breakups than any of the defensive backs. He knocked down so many passes. He’s a great athlete, and I think people kind of miss that. They worked him out at the combine as a linebacker, and he moved pretty well there, and he has tremendous acceleration. We liked him a lot, obviously, and after his first year I told everybody he was gonna be in the Hall of Fame.
Usually I find your hyperbole over the top. In this case your are understated. No idea how anyone can watch JJ and not see he is the singular best defensive player in football.
Heard it on the radio yesterday, but I found the quote:
He says he doesn't know a lot about clowney but feels he's likely a good person since the Texans put such a strong emphasis on character when it comes to their first round picks.
I can entertain the argument ...
I stopped reading right there. Sapp says/does dumb things.Yep, that Knucklehead Sapp...
Just to be clear, I don't think Wade opposed the pick. But JJ was 3rd choice. They were targeting Peterson, thought about Smith and took JJ as best there. Hugely happy they did. But I'm not giving a ton of credit for "we knew what he was going to become.".
The story behind drafting JJ WattIn 2011 the Texans had a very different game plan heading into the first round of the NFL Draft. The player they wanted was Patrick Peterson, cornerback out of LSU.
General manager and executive president Rick Smith had planned to trade picks with San Francisco to get Peterson. When the Cardinals took Peterson with the fifth-overall pick, the Texans had to readjust their strategy. Did they still want to trade with the 49ers for the seventh-pick and linebacker Aldon Smith?
They didnt. Instead, Houston kept their original position at number 11 and drafted a rookie named J.J. Watt
