The Actual and Real 2017 Texans Talk Mock Draft Extravaganza

As bad as the Browns need secondary help I would've picked Conley, with that said you cant go wrong with Howard. Adding Howard and Tubisky and fixing the OL in FA and all of the sudden the Browns could be building a very good foundation for the future.

On to fixing the secondary in the 3rd rd with their 2 picks.

Never registered my vote for Texans in this mock, knowing everybody is focused, like a laser on QB position. Personally I would take Howard over Watson. That would add a much more dynamic weapon than Will Fuller last years #1. Think OB if in charge takes hard look @ Webb, peterman or even Kaaya later

Agreed,

My guess is if you want a dynamic TE Engram will be there in the 2nd rd. That dude is a difference maker

You certainly had that pick already loaded into the cannon
Yeah once Kizer got past the Steelers, I knew he would be there at 34 with no trades.

In the real draft, I could see Arians and the Cardinals move back into the 1st for Kizer. He can play behind Palmer for a year and soak up the knowledge.

Jaguars missed their last pick so I suggest we start the discussion early on their pick just in case they miss again we will already have something ready.

Agreed. Unfortunately, I would be surprised if he makes it here for his pick. He's only logged on once since he signed up for the draft, and that was to apologize for missing the first round pick. Just saying.

I look at Jacksonville's roster and the biggest hole I see is in the secondary, even with their new FA addition. So I nominate Conley for the pick if it doesn't get made.

I pick for the Bears after Jacksonville and I have to say Conley is a horrible pick for Jacksonville. Just awful, worst pick of the draft. :bender:

David Njoku, TE Miami should be the pick after taking Lenord Fornett #4 overall because it gives their struggling franchise QB, Bortles, a chance. Best RB and second best TE.

Njoku killed it the other day, Miami Pro Day. Every bit the specimen athlete of Obi Melifonwu, huge catch radius, ran 4.49 forty with 40" vertical @ 6-4 245.

I have steelb's pick at #37 for the Rams, so please tag me when it comes up.

From big cat country it has CB, LDE, Guard, TE, RB as needs. Yes, CB even after signing Bouye and having Ramsey its saying there isn't much else. Bouye essentially replaced Amukamara, so Conley is a good pick too. Conley for CB, Njoku for TE, Wormley for LDE here is a write up from big cat country.

1. Cornerback
While the Jaguars did spend a ton of money bringing in A.J. Bouye in free agency, beyond Bouye and second-year corner Jalen Ramsey, there isn't much in regards to outside cornerback behind them. Sure, in a pinch Aaron Colvin could fill in, but it's pretty clear he's viewed as predominantly an inside corner. After Colvin is Josh Johnson, who also is more of a nickel corner. I don't expect the Jaguars to use the No. 4 overall pick or even a second rounder on corner, but this is an area they'll need to address in the draft, maybe with multiple picks.

2. Left End
Like corner, the Jaguars spent money in free agency to add to their defensive line in the form of Calais Campbell. Campbell will be playing strongside end (LDE) for the Jaguars predominantly, as well as kicking outside. A position where the Jaguars had a ton of depth at before now lacks that depth. The only other real LDE on the roster is Johnathan Woodard, a late round pick from 2016 who ruptured his Achilles in the preseason. Unlike corner, I think this will be a position the Jaguars address early on in the 2017 NFL draft.

3. Guard
I didn't specify which guard position as the need because I think you can add to either side. A.J. Cann has the ability to play both guard positions, but seemed to struggle at the right guard position. He played left in college and that's where he looked pretty good at for the Jaguars. Either way, guard is something the team is likely to address in the first few rounds of the draft. They do have bodies there however they can get by with if they miss out.

4. Tight End
Like the guard position, the Jaguars have guys they can get by with at the tight end position, but they could use an upgrade overall. Marcedes Lewis is a base formation in-line tight end and Ben Koyack might be able to play that role, but overall they're missing more bodies of the type of tight end that Tom Coughlin hinted they'll be looking for going forward. That means I probably wouldn't get your hopes about over some of the interesting move tight ends in the draft and more so the all-around tight ends.

5. Runningback - Fournette
This is probably much lower than most people will list, but I think the team is OK at runningback if they don't add any this offseason. That being said, I'm confident they will in the draft, because it's deep with talented backs, but I don't think it will be very early like some. Sure, Leonard Fournette at four would logically make a lot of sense, but if you have a healthy Chris Ivory splitting time with T.J. Yeldon and a rookie with more the scheme of what was used the last two weeks, you're OK. It won't be a strength, but it should be OK.

I would say Njoku or best OL available. Whether that's Feeney, Dawkins, Moton, etc. could be up for debate.

I have Njoku graded higher though so I lean toward him.

With the 35th pick in the 2017 NFL draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select…David Njoku, TE, Miami

6’4” 246lbs.
79620161126002_Duke_at_UM.jpg

The Jags loaded up on defense during free agency. Now they focus on getting their young QB some more help with addiction of Fournette and now Njoku.

NFL Comparison: Greg Olsen

Bottom Line: Ascending pass catching talent with elite athleticism and enough fight in his run blocking to believe that he can be lined up anywhere on the field at any time. Njoku should annihilate the combine with monster numbers in speed and explosion, but his play on the field shows he's more than a combine warrior. He is still growing into his body and has to add to his play strength, but his playmaking potential and elite traits should make him a first-round pick and a future Pro Bowler. – Lance Zierlein (nfl.com)

Great pick!

With the 36th pick in the 2017 draft the Chicago Bears select... Gareon Conley, CB out of The Ohio State

Sources Tell Us
"He's not as good as the other cornerback (Marshon Lattimore), but he's a good corner. If he measures over 6-foot and runs in the low 4.4s he will come off the board on Thursday night." -- North area scout for NFC team
NFL Comparison
Aqib Talib
Bottom Line
Press-corner with experience at both cornerback spots and an ability to fit into a variety of coverage techniques. He plays with good top-end speed and has the ball skills to challenge and defend passes on any level. He can step in right away in zone coverage, but could struggle to match patterns from a pedal. He will likely be targeted by teams seeking long cornerbacks who can crowd and trail receivers down the field. He has the talent to become an early starter, but he must improve in run support.

Bottom line for the Bears, they must upgrade their defensive backfield. Had I not been late for the party, I would have drafted Adams but I wasn't disappointed by the vote to go another direction.

The Los Angeles Rams make their initial selection at pick #37 selecting - Dan Feeney - G, Indiana.

GM steelbtexan will elaborate later.

Yeah, I think it's down to 4 QB's for the Texans: Kizer, Watson, Peterman, and Webb. Those would be my 4 choices. Webb and Peterman can be had later, but if hes THE GUY you overdraft him. Garoppolo was the Texans guy and they got cute in the draft and got burned.

Looks to me, far as velocity & accuracy Webb has better pro arm.

Looks to me, far as velocity & accuracy Webb has better pro arm.

Velocity, sure. But that's absolutely it.

From what I've seen of both, Peterman is easily the more accurate. He's also orders of magnitude more efficient in terms of his drop/setup/delivery. And can do the latter things with more versatility (ie, on the run, from different angles, under pressure).

But yes, Webb definitely has the stronger arm.

I had Feeney as my 2nd rated interior OL in this draft. Lamp was rated #1. Both took reps at C during the Sr. Bowl and looked like naturals at the position.

The Rams tried and failed to sign Ryan Groy as a RFA. So Center is a huge hole that needs to be filled. An OL that looks like this gives Gurley room to run and will protect Goff.

Whitworth/Robinson/Feeney/Saffold/Havenstien is a solid OL. Need to add some weapons for Goff.

The LA Chargers select....

.
Baylor+v+Texas+Tech+cccfGhC3EDWl.jpg

Patrick Mahomes II, QB, Texas Tech.

At 35, Philip Rivers is long in the tooth and the Chargers aren't quite good enough to be in serious contention immediately. LA chooses to grab a QB with physical tools and an arm to sit behind Rivers and learn how to be a successful pro in the NFL. LA now has the QB of the future.

So the Browns got Myles Garret, Mitch Trubisky, and OJ Howard? Damn son, nice draft so far!

You're Brownies are really building something special.

I really could see the draft falling this way. Except Howard goes to Miami and Njoku goes to Cleveland.

Too all of the loyal Browns fans good times are around the corner in a couple of yrs.

Good to see you check in Dutch.

NY Jets select: Tim Williams, Edge, Alabama

Alabama has the type of talent and scheme on defense that can make life much easier for everyone along the front seven, but Williams has explosiveness and pass-rush talent to create his own havoc as a pass rusher regardless of what is around him. Scouts say he is lighter than his listed weight and needs to prove he can play with increased toughness in order to reach his potential. Williams' career might be as a pass-rush specialist, but he's talented enough at that endeavor to become a dangerous rush linebacker in the NFL.

He's like the Predator. When he's allowed to do just one thing -- get the quarterback -- he is really good at it.

Hooker and Williams make the Jets defense much more explosive and dangerous. He may be one dimensional but pass rush is life on the NFL.

Almost went Charles Harris from Missouri.

Haven't seen you on TT in years, it feels like. Hope you're doing well

lol, I poke around once in a while, but it's hard to get excited about the Texans when they tread water for years. I still root for them, but if I miss a game it doesn't bother me. I'm a bad fan :(

I do hope the Browns finally turn things around. It's sad being the perpetual doormat of the AFC North, but the Indians were in the same boat in the 80's, then everything changed when they picked up some HoF players in the early 90s. It can happen! That O-line should be solid, if they can find a QB to put behind it, he should have a good chance to succeed. If it's Brock in there to take hits and mosey on through the season while the other guy rides the bench, I would be OK with that. Let the young guys get some experience, let Hue work with Mitch or whoever the new QB is. Could work out in the future, or it could fail and suck like most of the Browns decisions... lol

I think the Browns are turning it around, and it will happen sooner than most expect, they've brought in a new analytics approach, 2019 I think they will be competing

Sorry guys I've been really busy with my business this week. It went a lot quicker than I expected, but I would have made the same pick for the Giants that the consensus did. If this @Porky thing is supposed to be working - I don't get it. I get no notification at all that I am aware of.

And for the record, my vote would have been Mahomes. I'm not a huge Watson fan. I just don't feel he fits what BOB wants. Partially because I've watched Mahomes more than any college QB in the last 25 years probably. Since my step daughter goes to Tech, I've had the opportunity to see him play in person multiple times, and many more times on TV. My own personal upside comparison is Brett Favre. I see a ton of Favre in this kid - that does mean I expect him to have a relatively high number of picks but also a lot of TD's and a lot of throws that will leave you amazed. I'm pulling for Mahomes.

I'll try to grab the next Giants pick but can't promise as this is going way faster than I expected. If I don't make it - do the consensus thing.

With the 40th pick in the 2nd Round the Panthers select...

Desmond King, CB/S, Iowa

Four year starter and ball hawk with excellent ability to read the QB and make plays. May not be physically intimidating but does well in all the other areas.

@mussop you're on the clock...

I was the 14th voter. It had already been decided before I voted the pick was going to be a QB. I don't really like either of them, but I had to pick one. I'd seen more of Watson and his team (win) than Mahomes so that is why I picked Watson. Also, I've seen enough of Texas quarterbacks putting up Madden like numbers in college and then flopping in the NFL. Mahomes passed for over 500 yards (819 in a loss against Oklahoma) in 4 separate games and the Red Riders were 1-3 in those games.

@banned1976 I hear you but I'm skeptical of TTech QBs given that the system allows them to put up un Godly numbers. I could be wrong but Mahomes will probably end up being another Graham Harrell.

I don't think people are solely looking at the numbers and concluding he is a potential Franchise QB, they are looking at his skill set, the arm, the accuracy, the decision making etc. Its not like they are basing the evaluation on the fact he threw for so many yards and TD's. The offense he played in doesn't invalidate his talents.

Why would he be the next Graham Harrell? Harrell went undrafted and had nowhere near the talent of Mahomes but put up just as impressive if not moreso numbers. Its not about the numbers its about his arm and accuracy.

It does for me to an extent. I'm not doubting his arm strength, but yeah, I definitely doubt his QB makeup.

Yall ever see a Tech offensive play? It's misdirection galore. 5+ guys running routes and crossing and picking each other. No Big 12 defense AKA Big Joke of a defense is going to be able to lock in on all of these guys. Plus the plays generally call for him to focus on 1 or 2 guys that are supposed to be thrown at. So much talk of going through progressions, but I generally see him following a player until the time is right vs clicking through players and moving on.

I have seen him make a couple nice touch passes like at the 0:52 mark of Oklahoma game and I have seen him do a couple things with his feet which besides Rosencopter we've never really had either, but at the end of the day, these Brett Favre comparisons are a very long reach for me.

I guess cause they both gamble occassionally he's Brett Favre?

Feel free to check out some of his video and tell me I'm not watching this correctly, that's fine too:

Watson plays in an offense that only asks him to read half the field as well. He doesn't have to go through progressions like a pro does either.

I'll check back tomorrow. If I'm not back in time I'm looking for a CB or OLB 1st, but if great value has dropped I might take that instead. I'd prefer not to reach. I can always use line help too, specifically at Tackle to replace Wagner.

Everyone sees things differently. You prefer an arm, I prefer a winner. We can revisit in 3-4 years when you and the other Mahomes lovers retreat off his defense lol.

I'm mostly teasing here.

@mussop and the Bengals pick deadline is 6:40pm. Here is the 2nd round thus far...

(33) Cleveland - O.J. Howard (TE, Alabama)
(34) San Francisco - DeShone Kizer (QB, Notre Dame)
(35) Jacksonville - David Njoku (TE, Miami)
(36) Chicago - Gareon Conley (CB, Ohio State)
(37) LA Rams - Dan Feeney (OG, Indiana)
(38) LA Chargers - Patrick Mahomes (QB, Texas Tech)
(39) NY Jets - Tim Williams (LB, Alabama)
(40) Carolina - Desmond King (DB, Iowa)
(41) Cincinnati - mussop [on the clock; 6:40pm]
(42) New Orleans - austins23 [on deck]
(43) Philadelphia - beerlover
(44) Buffalo - bah007

It's just people making lazy comparisons. Harrell was a smart guy with a noodle arm which played very well at the college level. Mahomes is a smart guy (the only thing they have in common.) who has a gun for an arm.
