Cleveland Browns just passed the baton to the Houston Texans for being the most screwed up front office in the National Football League.
Someone explain how this trade preserved more cap space than cutting him? I have see no explanation, yet people act as if it is common knowledge.
"To make the deal work -- the Browns couldn't just take Osweiler and a second-round pick and give up nothing -- the teams also exchanged 2017 draft picks. Houston gets a fourth, Cleveland a sixth. "
You make a good point about the move being about this year -- whether or not it was a good move will depend on what they do with the extra cap space this year. It would seem that there is now room for Romo and another big FA signing if in fact they are pursuing Romo. I've been wondering all along if there wasn't plans to move back in the draft this year -- maybe the 2nd round pick next year is picked back up. It seems like a lot of dust has to settle to make a final assessment of whether these moves are good or not -- but it's clear that McNair is in win now mode, which I'm in favor of.I really don't get it. This is 100% for cap THIS YEAR, because Brock was only going to cost us $6M against the cap next year. We only save $10M against the cap this year, although we don't have to worry about the $6M next year. I just don't understand.
I'm so mad we gave the Browns a second just to take our trash !!!!!!
Rick smith should have been in that deal fire him !!!!!
What's funny is last year he signed Osweiler and this board said he should be applauded if it worked and held accountable if it didn't. Well, it didn't. And not only did it not work, he compounded it by giving away picks to get rid of the guy that he signed. And Texans fans are thanking him for it. Osweiler was actually so bad that fans are thanking Smith (the guy who signed him) for dumping picks to get rid of him.
So much for accountability.

Blame the Texan prganization as much as you want for the failed signing of Osweiler...However, celebrate their decision to move on so quickly and aggressively instead of saving face for another year like 90% of NFL organizations would have don.
The key reason that has not been addressed is that Brock's salary is guaranteed. If he was cut, the Texans would still have to pay his salary but with the trade the Browns are now on the hook for the guaranteed salary.Someone explain how this trade preserved more cap space than cutting him? Exactly. This is a move that's part of a series of moves and until you see what they all end up being and whether they pay off we can't really be certain it's a mess or a stroke of genius.
All I really know is that Os is gone and I'm going back to "Bueno Cat".

Report: Browns planning to cut Osweiler following trade with Texans
Dan Wilkins Mar 9, 2017 3:32 PM
The Cleveland Browns are planning to cut quarterback Brock Osweiler after acquiring him in a trade from the Houston Texans, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
More to come.
So, I'm assuming we are going to sign Romo and he's going to get injured again.
Would this do it? Would this finally be enough to move on to a different GM? Sadly, I don't think it would.
Lol. They went out and got the best FA QB they could last year. It didn't workout. They figure out a way to get out of his contract to go another direction. Get over yourself.Cleveland Browns just passed the baton to the Houston Texans for being the most screwed up front office in the National Football League.
First smith should get no praise for this. It's like starting a fire and then being a hero for reporting it first.
2nd based on past qb escapdes the only way for this to play out is trade for romo sign him to guaranteed contract and then find out he can't play in offseason.
3rd can the browns pay the remaining amount on bricks/brocks contract and trade him to a team for draft choices and that team get him for free? Why the hell not?
You may not want to give Rick any praise for this, but I've got to give him praise, and whoever else was involved in making this happen, for continuing to search for that elusive "Franchise QB!" Lot of mistakes made no doubt, but you have to keep trying until you hit!
How many times has Rick tried now? Maybe it's time to let someone else try.
This is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen the Texans do, and that's really saying something.
Im truly disgusted.
The texans weren't satisfied to just miss on oz and whats been called an easy contract to drop after 2 years.
No. They felt compelled to COMPOUND the problem by giving away a 2nd round pick to the browns so they could cut him.
I have no doubt this move is intended to preceed another. That's great.
As it stands now, this trade is snuggled up there with the herschel deal as all time stupid.
( and why wouldn't ob be down for it? He wont be here in 2018 anyway.) Utter disaster and the final nail in the rick smith / ob king sized coffin.
Save me from the recycled fantasy next season things will get better. They haven't and arent until ob and rick are gone. I was actually wearing a texans shirt earlier today and took it off in fear of the humiliation.
Just wow.
Just wait until Elway swoops in and takes Romo from us leaving us with no Romo and no Osweiler, leaving us with dicks in hand and a butt chin still at the helm.
So how do people grade this trade if we use this cap space on Romo and he gets injured again? We basically would have spent tens of millions of cap plus a high draft pick to start Tom Savage (who was on the team the entire time).
I'm not saying dumping Osweiler was an awful move but we seem to be compounding mistakes.
I'm telling you that Osweiler is going to be good for another team. Just wait. There's a reason people are interested.
If I'm the Cardinals, I'm absolutely trying to get him. Big QB, an *actual* offensive guru unlike our supposed one and an outgoing, fragile QB ahead of him? Slam dunk.
Wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit if they went with Savage/Weeden/Mahomes next yr. What they should've done last yr.
You should either be upset that they signed Osweiler in the first place and relieved that they successfully unloaded him and moved on so quickly... or, upset that they gave away a good QB without getting anything in return.... Wouldn't you agree that it would be worse for the team to keep a QB on the team, under contract, and soaking up so much cap space for another year simply to save a 2018 2nd round draft pick.
IMO as long as we draft a QB early and he sits and has time to not only learn how to be a professional but also how to play QB at a high level then it'll be a wash. We can't go into next year looking for a replacement QB again.
Chances seem high that Romo is the guy, hoping to catch Peyton Manning lightning in a bottle, but we HAVE to develop someone else.
I wouldn't have had a problem with that. Make Osweiler a June 1st cut, save your draft pick.

Should probably develop an insurance agent to cover Romo's shoulder...
Oz couldve sat on the bench - even the practice squad for one year without losing a 2nd round pick. Save the "vertigo spin job." Im not buying that horse ****.

I hear you but I am not sure there has been such a glaring failure made before. Usually a free agent paid this much is not this bad. Brock was not just bad but historically bad. Everyone could see after a few games that there was NO hope for him. His speed of delivery along with his accuracy made it obvious he was not going to make it. Go back and check the board. The Texans still went with him in the playoff game. I don't think they got over it that quick. You can't save face when the mistake is that huge.
You are on a roll today!
If we didn't trade him, and made him a June 1 cut instead, it would have been 25m spread over the 2 years, or 12.5m this year and next.
I agree that it was a bad mistake. However, the only thing that happened today is the Texans recognized, admitted, and swiftly dealt with that mistake (which happened a year ago), and have successfully moved on with minimal damage.
That 2 is for next year and who's to say they don't pick a 2 back up somewhere down the road? 2018 is a long ways away.
Yeah, I'm not quite sure what the June 1 cut numbers are by year, but it would be the 25m in total. We save 16m of that from our cap in total, and pay only the 9m in remaining bonus. The part that eludes me is the importance of the $10M savings. Right now it has no value to me so I can't factor it into the merit of this trade.
Secondly, I'm pretty sure had we designated him a June 1st cut his cap hit for 2017 would be the same, as if he played. We wouldn't gain any cap space, we wouldn't have lost any additional. We'd gain a roster spot.
The remaining $6M from his signing bonus would apply to 2018.
