Nelson visited the Texans April 11, 2022............48 hours later, he signed his 2-year contract. He participated throughout OTAs.
 
I think Danielle Hunter is an interesting player.
On one hand, he would appear to be an appealing addition to the defensive line unit, that would certainly be a good mentor for Anderson.
On the other hand, he's going to be 29 this year and since he started in the NFL at 20, has more wear and tear on him than average.
He has missed nearly 2 seasons due to neck injury and biceps tear, but the biceps doesn't concern me all that much.

A question to determine is what is his asking price on what will be his 3rd contract? Hunter is looking for more money than what the Vikings are comfortable giving him. I have always been a bit more cautious, instead of just saying to throw money at a player when they hit this point, depending on position. Then there's the trade compensation. I have seen the Vikings wanting a 2nd rounder and more. I guess if coach Ryans thinks they are Danielle Hunter away from winning a playoff game, then go for it. Outside of that, the contract, trade compensation, injuries and age would give me some pause.

That's not to say I wouldn't make the trade, but there's reason to give it some more thought.

I'm so glad you're ok with this. I wish I could see this as a positive for our GM. To me it looks like ownership feels like they need to put the bumpers up so their GM doesn't throw a gutter ball.

Mandate could mean the need to walk away from the draft with a QB. It could mean that ownership liked Stroud and so did the GM/HC. The use of the word "mandate" inherently suggests someone was forced to do something they didn't want to do.

Do we have any proof that this mandate from ownership to draft Stroud was in contradiction to what the GM/HC wanted to do?

I don’t. But like you said, if the GM/HC wanted to do it there would be no need for a mandate.

So I’m just arguing the idea there was a mandate.

I don’t know that there was. But if there was then the Texans would be better off moving on from Nick sooner rather than later

There may have not been an agreed upon deal, with the trade parameters nailed down. But, the Texans and Cardinals had certainly talked trade, because the Cards GM said to Nick "Are you guys still interested?"

I don't question what you heard from your source. But on draft night, you didn't have that the Texans were about to pull that trade. And it had already been rumored on NFL.com days before. I could believe if Cal and Hannah had pushed Nick to deal for Bryce Young. The Bears were ready to make that happen and there was contact. But to demand that Stroud be the pick? It seems like 2nd guessing. To me, it looks like a move the Texans had been looking at all along, and did a great job of keeping it inside on a need to know basis.

What do you gain by moving on from Caserio? If ownership wants a yes man at the GM position, they'll just hire another one.

If Stroud ends up being a franchise QB, I'm sure we'll find out if it was a McNair mandate by a well timed leak. Someone is going to want that credit. lol

That's my take based on the history of this franchise. I don't see a zebra changing his strips here.

And yeah, Caserio will be the fall guy if this rebuild never materializes.

Hopefully it's the former as a Texans fan. I don't care who makes decisions on Kirby if they lead to success.

Agreed, however the McNair's history of meddling is only topped by their failures in building a championship level on field product.

What units? I would assume your talking about the ST's, because the Offense/Defensive units certainly didn't hold up their end of the bargain.

Chris freaking Moore was his WR1 for much of the yr. Jordan was TE1 for much of the yr, Burkhead was the 3rd down RB until Pierce went down and then he became RB1. The IOL was awful. I'm ok with moving on from Mills, although Stroud certainly wouldn't have been my choice. But Let's not act like Mills ever stood a chance of being successful.

I'm with you, if Stroud's all that, he shouldn't have any problems beating out the 30th ranked QB. Sink or swim, lets get this show on the road. No excuses.

You can believe that Cal and Hannah could have "pushed" Nick for Young, but not for Stroud. Well, no second guessing about about the Stroud pick. My sources are solid on that point. The only unanimous pick by all Texans involved was the Anderson pick.

He had his fair shot and couldn’t capitalize. Time to move on or start his backup career here in Houston.

If your sources are so solid, why didn’t they give you the trade? I’m still waiting on them getting something right. You didn’t have the Ryans pick, either. Wasn’t Gannon Nick’s guy? Who did your sources say Nick wanted at QB?

The McNair’s demanding a QB? That’s a no brainer. That it had to be Stroud? Even you should be questioning that information.

That word source carries a lot of weight. A lot of media folks uses it a lot and the majority of the time. Lol they’re dead ash wrong.

You just proved how meddlesome the McNair's are and why Caserio was talking about moving on. Then he figured out he could work with Ryans even with the McNairs meddling.
 
I don't have a dog in this fight, but suggesting there was some kind of demand or mandate to take a certain player seems awful counterintuitive. GM's are responsible to get players the coaches want, seeing as how almost every coach in the NFL has control over the roster. The scouts typically work for the GM and provide their insight on the players. The GM and coach must work through the selection process together based upon their wants and the information provided to them. An owner telling a GM and coach who to take, despite all the work those two put in, not to mention the work of their entire scouting department seems far fetched even for a completely dysfunctional front office.

I really don't know much about McNair, but I know from interviews I read when I first started watching the Texans and reading information from his Dad, Bob, that he felt the same way about the relationship of the GM and coaches. Agree that they may say, "We need to take a QB with our first pick", but to demand a certain player seems a little off to me when they spend a buttload of money for those guys to make those decisions.

I could be wrong obviously and maybe the Houston front office is just completely F'd...
