It would help if we'd stop over-analyzing rookie play just to keep the discussion alive.

Rookies are just that . . rookies. They are going to make mistakes. They are going to think too much. They are not going to play to their promised potential the first year. That is the rule, not the exception.

Where do you get that OB has disdain for rookies?

By watching/listening to every one of his pressers. It's the "rookies make rookie mistakes" mantra. When rookies come into the league they need to get in line, keep their mouths shut and follow the lead of the veterans who know what it takes to make it.

One mistake and your starting QB is gone and your year is done for. DJ was canned for it. Fiedorowicz got pulled & reamed out for letting a free rusher up the middle. I don't see him putting X out there if he's deficient in pass pro. We'll see.

Hard to argue with. OB is as rough a subject as are any of the draft picks.

This XSF stuff may be injury related. I got that inference earlier from someone but can't remember where now. He battled back issues all last year.

Per my posts in last year's Injury Report Threads:

Last year in week 1 and week 2, he was listed in the Injury Report as a "back".....and "probable." In weeks 15, 16 and 17, he was listed in the Injury Report as a "back"..........."out" in weeks 15 and 16..........and "probable" in week 17, and still did not make the field that game.

From practice today, just makes me wonder...

look X, I just want an introduction to your sister. I promise to tell you what coach said about you when he called me into his office...

From the "buddy taping" of his 4th and 5th digits, looks like Jone is recovering from a finger ligament tear, extensor tendon tear, dislocation or fracture. From the somewhat atypical way he is buddy taped, it appears that flexion at the joint is somewhat blocked instead of being taped to allow free flexion of the digits. This could temporarily affect his grip strength.

XSF in some kind of "walking boot" today.
Patrick Star in a podcast earlier made reference to XSF having a "leg" issue....but with a boot more likely an ankle sprain or fracture, or foot fracture. If it's a wedge walking boot, he could even be dealing with an Achilles tendonitis.

Lisfranc?

Welp, I don't think it was injury that put XSF at 2nd team earlier...

So, while he looked rocked up, his conditioning/wind must've been less than ideal.

But now he's injured... so there's that.

I didn't think it was due to injury either. If he's injured sit him down. What good does running an injured guy with the second team do?

Do you know if it is a true walking boot, or has he been seen on crutches without weight-bearing?

I didn't think they even used a walking boot until it got to a fairly severe sprain. Is that most likely an overabundance of caution or an indication it's more than a 'tweak' (or that the whole story is FOS)?

Ain't it the truth? That stuff about not being a long term injury may be one of the usual official team lies. If it is Lisfranc it would seem to be especially bad for OLmen, since they need to push with their feet. If it is, it's probably career-ending.
It isn't even preseason and the string of key injuries has already started. It's downright enough to make me shriek to the heavens. Reserving right to change after preseason, regular season record now looks like 5-11. Don't even ask if that will be good enough to make the playoffs!

There are always nicks and scraped in TC, and yes some players have missed days here and there, but outside of Foster going down, what are the string of key long term injuries that have turned them into a 5-win team?

What I meant is that this is just the start of their usual string of key injuries.

When you have a mild lateral ligament ankle sprain (the typical type of sprain) with a 1-3 week recovery, a brace is commonly used to support the ankle. A walking boot could be used initially, but is usually reserved for a more severe sprain, a mid-foot sprain, a more uncommon medial ligament sprain, or a high ankle sprain (the latter 2 carrying a substantially longer recovery and return to play). The reason I asked if he was walking in the "boot" and not on crutches.........if he is placing any weight on the foot, it is not even a mild Lisfranc injury.

My friend says Xavier Su'a-Filo is a big bust. Seems a bit too soon to be declaring that already? From what I see he has all the tools to become a respectable offensive lineman. Just is a late boomer is all.

Better to "boom" late than to not "boom" at all.

He might have the tools, but does he have the 'want to'?

All these injuries (first it's the back, now it's the foot) seem to be having to do with him coming to camp out of shape.

Was he here for the OTAs?

With the QB situation, along with the RB situation, the last thing they need is a big hole upfront. Best pray to God, nobody else upfront gets hurt

He's an OL. It takes longer to adjust for OL when moving up a level. That's why so many OL recruits redshirt in college. I admit it is a bit disconcerting but way too early to call him a bust.

They also moved him around a lot on the line last year which OB has open admitted was a mistake. It's a little premature to call him a bust. Can we at least wait until he fails in the regular season to call him that?

Although Texans left offensive guard Xavier Sua-Filo is still expected to return during the preseason after “tweaking” his foot-ankle, it won’t happen this week.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien doesn’t expect the 2014 second-round draft pick from UCLA to make it back to practice this week. Su’a-Filo got hurt last week in practice, and sources with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly indicated that the injury isn’t regarded as a long-term health issue and predicted that he’ll be able to resume football activities within the next week or two.

That's encouraging, I think ?

He's a LG. He should have been practicing every rep at LG from the beginning. Moving him around slowed his development and the injuries have slowed it further. I'll admit bias in that I had a 1st round grade on him in the draft, so maybe I have more faith in him than I should. But I think he's got the skills to be a very good pro player.

This seems like some sort of NFL HC achilles heel. All 3 of our HCs have farted around with rookies at multiple positions. I get the desire for versatility but I don't get why they don't let players get settled in to a primary position and later branch them out.

I'm not sure how many OL are typically kept on the final 53, but I'm wondering if it's more of a league thing than 'our 3 HCs thing', in that versatility is a necessary evil if you're allowed only so much depth.

Regarding Su'a-Filo, unless all the reports are completely wack, it would seem to me that reporting to camp out of shape would impact your development more than playing different positions.

Usually 8 or 9.

I think you always want your takles and guards to be able to play both sides if needed. But it's one thing to have a guy studying other positions and taking mental reps at that position...Something different when you are actually playing a guy at all those positions. For a rookie that's got to be hard....Hard to ever really get comfortable and get in a groove.

And on a side note...I know some people don't think it's a huge deal to switch sides...For a lot of vets they can probably do it and be ok...But think about if you're married and have different sides of the bed or just in your living room where you watch tv...You probably have a certain spot that just feels comfortable. You know they layout of that area....

It's kind of similar.

I may be biased, but in this case I believe OB realized he had a better prospect at LG in Ben Jones. After he makes up his mind about that, he's looking to see where he could put XSF &/or get him ready to fill in at multiple positions if the need arrives (which I think it did).
