Official 2012 Training Camp Thread

Bullock and Kubes are Aggies.

Bullock makes the team regardless of how Graham performs.

Gary wont be the only one not wanting to watch FG's this yr.

I think it says something that the coaches haven't had him try very much. Kris Brown has as many made 50+ field goals (on 34 attempts) as Graham has attempts with the same career length.

Well yeah. That's what I thought. The last day of minicamp was a huge surprise.

I don't know who has the stronger leg. But what I will say is that when the distances got longer at minicamp, Bullock did NOT look good and Graham put on a show. But that was one day.

Yesterday, they didn't try anything long in front of folks.

Here's my day 3 write up. Didn't get to include some stuff because the blog software was acting sketchy and I just had to hit publish.

With what the teams options are, I just want a guy who is automatic in the 30s, mostly automatic in the 40s, could kick a 50 yard one if conditions were right.

Don't think we can overreact to a couple of days.

Kickers are odd ducks and can go off one day and then turn sour another. Can't remember which preseason game it was when Rackers and Brown were competing. They were going kick for kick and Rackers just kept backing it up. They both hit one over 50 yards and Rackers went and set up a 60 yd attempt - Brown just walked away which I found odd since he has hit in a game from 58 yds. Rackers made the kick.

I was looking at an erroneous stat page. NFL.com has Graham going 2 of 4 from 50+ in 2009 to lift his career mark to 9 of 18. Still, I've always considered Graham to be a weak legged kicker. Of his 16 2011 kickoffs (under the new kickoff placement), Graham kicked only one touchback. Color me confused that Graham is now considered to have a monster leg.

One guy observing at camp one day thought yesterday that Graham had a stronger leg and tweeted it.

Personally, this is what I've observed:

Only time at minicamp they did public kicking, Graham looked like the far superior kicker, and kicked some very very long field goals accurately, and high enough not to get block by guys who were trying to block.

Yesterday was only short kicks. That were made.

Today they did more short kicks at two distances on opposite goal from yesterday. A little breeze. I observed Bullock doink a very short kick off of the upright for a miss. I thought Graham made all his kicks but heard Scurfield say on the radio that he though Graham missed one, but he wasn't sure because he was far away.

Yes, the Texans will want to keep their draft pick guys. OTOH, Kubiak hates having to rely on rookies for key positions.

They will be monitoring camp kicks, but it is going to be all about preseason games.

Personally, I would be fine with a Rackers kind of guy. I don't think either of these guys is Janokowski-leg, so I'd be okay with Graham if that means you get a guy who has done this before, can handle the normal sorts of NFL kicks and you aren't worried he is going to soil his drawers for a real NFL game.

Also think Donnie Jones is your punter for the season. Looking good. Isn't facing a suspension. Isn't still sitting on the trainers table with a bag of ice on his knee after rehabbing like Hartmann.

DL RaShon Sunny Harris getting some notices and time with the "ones"

Yes. Noticed that. Cody sat today. He and OD will be sitting every 3rd/4th day at coach's decision to keep legs fresh.

They are rotating some guys around to work with ones sometimes. FB Derrell Smith working with 1s more than Moran Norris. I asked Kubiak about FB's today:

(on the fullback competition) “It’s an interesting dynamic. James (Casey) is our starting fullback, but we do a lot of different things with James. The young kid (Derrell) Smith has a lot of ability. I think he’s got a chance to be an excellent one, but he’s a former defensive player trying to learn to play offense, so that’s his struggle right now. Of course, the old man that we brought in (Moran Norris) - don’t tell him that - Norris has been playing a long time and he’s a banger. He’s a big banger. They’re all kind of different, so we’ve got to sort out who’s going to be the best special teams help. How do we set our roster? Two fullbacks? One fullback? What are we going to do?”

(on FB James Casey’s versatility) “Yeah, he’s like my Jim Thorpe. He’s got to go do everything. I’m going to play him everywhere. He gives us a lot of versatility offensively and causes problems for people, so I’ve got to use James the right way. I’m starting to do it in training camp and not waiting until the season.”

Is Jared Crick making any kind of showing, yet??? I see him in the rotation but haven't picked up any chatter on him.

There's some numbers that suggest that from year to year, there are very few NFL kickers who play at consistent level.

That being said, the accuracy of kickers in recent years has been astonishing, and it can be a benefit to getting that sort of kicker because you know you will always get points and not be stuck in a bad position.

Also will note with Graham (and any other kicker) that Reliant is a much friendlier place to kick than Cincy.

Sidenote: Norris is a freakin monster

That said, this Smith cat appears to have more athletic ability than Norris.

Not standing out as being particularly bad/good. Spoke to Seth Payne who said that he'd start watching him more carefully. Seth is watching practices and will be an add on to various 610 shows. If you haven't been listening to them, you are missing out.

Saw Kubiak talking to Crick after practice, asking about his folks as they were walking out of the Bubble. Which doesn't sound like a big deal but with so many players, rookies don't talk much one on one with coach. They have most of their interactions with their position coaches.

From the small dose I've seen of him it appears he'll need to make adjustments to the way he attacks/takes on blockers. Or, he'll need to gain another 15-20 lbs. To me, he's been easily taken out of plays. It's still early though, but he should not be compared to Watt at all like he was after we drafted him. Two different animals

My view? I don't want Smith responsible for protecting Schaub. He's just started playing offense. Now in the NFL. In front of big old stadium. On the road. With all the new guys on the offense this year, my ideal would be:

1 Smith on practice squad as a developmental guy.
2 Norris making the squad as the fullback. Beastly. Full growed man you don't have to worry about.
3 Casey being considered more of a TE option and not taking those 2nd half fullback snaps at all.

All of them wrapped in bubble wrap.

For all the people who were freaking out about Posey, it sounds like he's impressed Kubiak the last couple of days. It was way overblown in OTAs about him not being in elite football shape. Glad he's gotten off to a strong start.

Yes.

Posey one-on-one seems sharp. Light going on behind his eyes. Says right things. Physically imposing. Working extra after practice. A lot.

Gorgeous catch today way down field from Matt Schaub. Didn't see, but heard he did some other nice catches during 1 on 1s.

I know we get news day by day, but it is important to look at big picture.

I know there is a lot of pressure to get some *name* Wrs to join this group. And it is uncomfortable to have so many guys who might freak in a NFL game because you just never know. But it's good that they have an entire camp to train guys into their kind of players. And it isn't like the rookies are guys from small schools that haven't been in a loud stadium before or haven't experienced pressure. Productive guys from big programs who are going to be trained into the right way for the Texans to do stuff.

Will likely be the case. I do, however, think Smith has the potential (cliche', I know) to be a very good FB. I like Smith's athletic ability, but I'd like to see him add a few more lbs too

Funny piece of trivia you probably know - three kickers hold the record for most FG's over 50 yards in a single game at three and all three have a Texans connection. Rackers did it as a Cardinal but was a Texan. Brown did it as a Texan and Janikowski did it against the Texans.

Don't know about that. Smith was going with the 1s. Maybe seeing how he can do.

I just can't listen to 610. Such a terrible station.

I just can't listen to 610. Such a terrible station.

During camp/post camp, it is worth a listen. They are doing regular interviews with Rick Smith at 8:15. Because they are at camp, they can also grab various players/etc. Post camp today it was very very good.

If they start talking about something dumb, just punch up the other stations. And if all the talk is dumb, that's when I go to NFL Sirius Radio.

That's the only time I listen now. I still can't stand that Nick guy. His voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

I go satellite at lunch and on way home

Nick and Innes are hard to handle .

I like Greg Koch and ND Kalu and In the Trenches . In the mornings it's 790 and the big show .

Right, me too. I just started the 610 mornings due to training camp. Otherwise, I can't handle them.

Don't get me started on Innes. Good grief, worst ever

I have a hunch Bullock will endure some "injury" at some point that will land him on the IR.

Yes, yes...but of course.

The strangest things happen to a few guys every year around the final cutdown deadline.

I'm really pulling for this guy. Before his injury, at Nebraska he was kicking some ass.

Kubiak has heaped lot of praise on Posey recently.

For anyone who has attended practice this week:

What time do you have to get there to get a good seat? I sure as hell don't want to get there at 4:00 AM if I don't have to. Any info would be great!

I got there about 730 on Sat and the bleachers were full, standing room only. But if you stand between the 2 main fields you have a really good view of both.

Yes, that is the best place to be because you can see drills on both fields. The players sometimes high five the fans as they are running from one field to the other.

Yes. Today especially because reporters asked him about Posey because of flashy play.

Sometimes the questions to Kubiak are about a specific player. Sometimes the questions are open ended an allow Kubiak to name players that stood out to him. I'm sure Posey would have come up today whether reporters brought him up today or not. Really nice catch in the team session.

But please note, just because Kubiak talks about a player doesn't mean he is pointing that guy in particular out as opposed to other guys at the same position. A lot of times he's just being asked about a particular guy.

Yep. That is where I was on sat & will be tommorrow.

First year I went out I sat in the bleachers. There was plenty of room. Came late and found a spot pretty easily.

Last year i almost felt like it was a real game day.

I know it's packed this year for sure. Anyways I say that because I was basically forced into the middle part and I loved every second of it.

By far the best place to be if you really want to see what's going on.

He doesn't usually hold back though if he thinks a specific player did not have a good day of practice.

Kubiak hasn't been as negative as he was when things first got started. I think he was trying to set the tone.

I dont think he'll be doing too much of that from here till the end of the season though. Now is the time to bring it together.

See y'all out there! If you see a very tall muscular tatted up white guy with a dark haired six year old sitting his shoulders that's me

*sigh*

Mark Berman‏@MarkBermanFox26

Texans left tackle Duane Brown left practice this morning after getting ice on his left ankle.

John McClain‏@McClain_on_NFL

Duane Brown's left ankle was getting iced. He was carted to Reliant Stadium for x rays.

Mercilus looked good. Posey was decent as well as Martin. Didn't notice much about the new Oline guys but Newton was fine playing 1st RT. Will have more thoughts later.

It was hot as hell out there! It doesn't help that everyone is packed in like sardines, trying to get the best view. I saw you Texans Chick, but you were talking to a few people and I wasn't going to interrupt. I saw Gary & his mom too. I'm sure I could have seen more than that, but I wouldn't know what anyone looks like, lol. It's not like our avatars are our pictures. My daughter was getting pretty roasted, so we didn't stick around for the rest of the field goals.

Which is the reason I'm only going to one this season, which was Monday. I've gone to almost all the open practices up until this season. Last year I told myself I wasn't going to go as much. It's just too crowded these days (goes with winning, I reckon). Heck, I chose Monday to go, thinking it'd be less crowded. Pffft! So much for that idea.

They've gotten too big for their practice area

Rookie K Randy Bullock just went 9-of-11 on FGs from 44-54 yds. Misses came from 44 (wide R) & 47 (wide L) #Texans

WR Lestar Jean is practicing w/ 2nd-team offense today.

CB Brice McCain is having a great camp. Working as starter w/ Kareem Jackson out. Breaking up passes left & right

P.D. Starr ‏@PHABMK6
Plenty of talk about Jerrell Jackson and their should be. #Texans

I have been talking about TJ since day one of camp. He had a great offseason and it shows on the field. #Texans

Grimes TD run, keep your eye on him #Texans fans. Grimes is better than advertised. Runs well in between the tackles.

Smith giving Cushing some business from the FB position.

Keshawn running with 1st team opposite Walter.

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley
Pro wrestling kind of take down. Louder hits today RT @PHABMK6: Braman with a nice hit on Tate. Caught Him in the air. #Texans

@BigRon281:
Brandon Brooks with some 1st-team action at RG. Arian riight off his butt for a TD from the 5.

Interesting about Jerrell Jackson. He is all legs/arms. Proportionally his legs are ridiculously long.

Loudest hit of today? Kasey Studdard laying someone out in the second level. Didn't see who it was but it lead to some profanity.

Bullock kicked today. No Shayne Graham. Wondering if they get to him tomorrow.

No more end of practice in the bubble. Once again, a lot of wide receivers working after camp. Posey last off the field. He was working extra with Manning. Manning said partly it was because he saw a route on the field in the red zone he wasn't expecting, so he was working with Posey to help himself too.

DBs were ahead of the WRs today. Too many balls hit guys in the hands not being caught. I am not concerned right now. It's a little up down now, but were also seeing a lot of backups at QB/WR. Did like seeing Keshawn Martin running slot. Very distinctive running style.
