Updated chart of when 1st-round qbs got their first start. Wentz becomes the 14th (of 24) to start opener since '08.

Looks like the Broncos are still trying to justify and manipulate the dialogue surrounding their QB choices.
Kubiak attributes quarterback moves to “different direction”

When the Broncos saw Peyton Manning retire and Brock Osweiler defect to Houston, Mark Sanchez emerged as the emergency option. With the emergency resolved, Sanchez no longer was needed.

But the Broncos still needed a third quarterback. So why did the team decide to go with Austin Davis instead of Sanchez?

“We just made a decision to go in a different direction,” coach Gary Kubiak told reporters on Sunday, via quotes distributed by the team. “Mark’s obviously had a lot of experience and stuff, but we went young at the quarterback position so that’s why we also brought Austin in here. We have confidence in these guys and we’ll go to work. We wish Mark all of the best. He was a true professional and a great person through everything.”

The different direction likely was driven by Sanchez’s $4.5 million salary and the seventh-round pick they would have had to surrender to the Eagles if they’d kept him around. While a seventh-round pick isn’t much, that’s where the Broncos found their current starting quarterback.

Not long ago, Kubiak was evaluating Davis as he entered the league.

“I studied him really hard coming out,” Kubiak said. “He has a little bit of background of my verbiage. He’s been in some quarterback rooms of guys that have played for me so I thought that we could make up some ground here pretty quick. When he’s had some opportunities, he’s done some good stuff. We’ll see. We’ll take it a day at a time, but I think he’ll catch up pretty quick.”

If he does, Davis possibly could become the next guy in if Siemian struggles, given the practical difficulties associated with putting a first-rounder into the fray but then yanking him if he plays like the rookie that he is.

Cecil Shorts to Bucs and Antonio Allen back to Jets.

2 Texans cuts on NFL rosters. Gotta be honest... I thought we'd have a few more!

Is he the one that failed his physical?

Stork failed the Redskins physical and the trade was undone. Pats released him.
Kline, from the sounds of it Philly didn't want him and just took the pick instead. Pats also released him.

Congrats to Drew Brees for signing the Kobe Bryant lifetime achievement contract with the Saints

NFL.com

"Even if New Orleans' decision makers were reluctant to commit to a 37-year-old quarterback into the next decade, they can take solace in the quality of Brees' late-season game film as he battled through "horrible, miserable pain" due to a torn plantar fascia and a rotator cuff injury in his throwing arm."

Am I missing something? They're happy to lock him up for $47M over two years knowing this? Or did Brees pull a fast one knowing this?

From what I can gather, Brees just won the retirement derby. There's a reason his agent was swinging for the fences with guaranteed money. 1 ... the team is going nowhere and has to rely on Brees to find some sort of magic to be in the conversation. 2 ... Brees is basically done. He very well might gimp his way through 5 more seasons, but he's not the guy to carry a team anymore. He just Ed Reed the Saints.

I read somewhere that Brees won the Kobe Bryant retirement contract. Makes sense.

From Roto:
In Denver, the Broncos locked up receiver Emmanuel Sanders to a three-year deal worth $33 million. The agreement had been discussed for several days and should keep Sanders in the Mile High City for the remainder of his career.

This has been an interesting game. Kubiak is staying true to himself. Easy passes for his QB, run the ball, punt. They'll lose this game for sure.

Seeing their fb score on the Vonta Leach play brought back memories.

Siemian's been throwing some strikes.

Not saying he's been perfect or anything, but he's thrown some precise passes between defenders I wouldn't have thought he'd attempt.

Nfl random thought of the day.. The NFL are liars and don't give two craps about player safety, they just want us to believe that... what I saw tonight was disgusting and disgraceful. The official crew and especially his own team coaches and medical staff didn't check on Cam when it was clear he was suffering out there.. where is this independent league physician who's supposed to step in and have final say.. that was a lie. This game will lead to even further rules in the offseason, because apparently the ones they put in place are still not being enforced.

Over the next 3 years the Broncos will pay Siemien and Lynch less than $9 Million and this morning I highly doubt that Elway would trade Siemen straight up for Brock Osweiler .....funny how things turn out.
