Injury Thread

Hey Cloak, with the injury happening in the first week of OTA's, whats the realistic timeline for him returning (barring any setbacks) to the field at 100% with minimal risk of reinjuring or having hammy issues going forward??

Conservative return would be ~2 months from injury. Unfortunately, the first month back is very significant risk for injury......and the entire season continues to be a significant risk for reinjury as well as compensatory injury. Add in the studies that show WRs following ACLs are significantly affected in lowered performance, and the level of Metchie's return contribution and longevity must be guarded.

Keene has had a knee meniscectomy in 2019 and a meniscus repair in 2021, with knee problems in between and following his last knee surgery. Longevity is questionable. Durability in the short term is to be seen. Hopefully he gives us some good time......time he has not been able offer so far.

Whether he requires surgery or chooses the conservative approach, he has about the same chance to ultimately return to playing football..................~80%. If he is in that 80%, either approach will require 4-5 months for him to return to the field.

Quessenberry also suffered meniscus damage.........a complex (ACL/MCL/meniscus) known as "The Unhappy Triad" since it acutely results in a very unstable and extremely painful knee. Approximately 40% of ACL/MCL combos will be found to have significant articular cartilage damage during the surgical repair.

From the offensive line thread.......

Most NFL linemen with a nonthumb (if it were a thumb metacarpal, the recovery stated in the article would be much longer) metacarpal fracture will be surgically repaired with a lock plate. Technically, the strength of the plate repair could allow a player to return 2-3 weeks post surgery...........but certainly that would be considered on the more radical side.

I was asked if Heck's foot issue is a Lisfranc. It does not fit information that I have managed to gain. I believe he has had chronic foot strain which has lead to the development and enlarging of a neuroma (a benign tumor of nerve tissue). Neuromas affecting nerves that supply the bottom of the foot and toes can be quite tender and painful. These can develop due to many factors that contribute to nerve irritation, particularly nonsupportive or poorly fitting shoes. Other factors include thinning of the fat around the nerves, poor foot posture, or abnormal foot structure or foot strains that stretch the nerves. Sometimes adjusting footwear can help. Injections to the nerves can be employed if this does not resolve the problem. But if the tenderness/pain still does not resolve, the neuroma must be excised.

Somebody needs to get Heck a pair of Altras!

He's always injured in some shape or form

Tytus played in 17 games last year. That's "all" for the Aggies out there. In 2021, he played in 15 games, and in 2020 he played in 14 games.

His rookie year was the only season that injuries led to a significant amount of sideline time. He played in 8 games that year. So, ok, as a rook...he missed half the year. Since then, he's been healthy enough to play for the vast majority of each season...culminating with every game last year.

That's the guy who is "always injured"?

How many games did the vaunted LT miss again after breaking a pinky fingernail in 2021?

Playing hurt and subpar because of injury should count too.

Other than that one season how many games has Tunsil missed because of injury? The games he missed didn't matter that yr, that was a lost season.

Christian Kirksey (hamstring), Brevin Jordan (hamstring), Brandon Hill (hamstring), Jarrett Patterson (leg), Thomas Booker (wrist), Tytus Howard (hand surgery) did not practice today.

What's wrong with Patterson's leg?
He suffered a left Lisfranc injury in mid-November of the 2020 season. It was a Lisfranc fracture which required surgery. He went back to surgery to remove hardware. Last Aug, he sustained a right "foot strain" and suffered a severe recurrent strain in Nov leading to the end to his season. This time the foot strain was a turf toe. He has since continued to have progressive problems with the turf toe and intermittent problems with his Lisfranc foot. The history of these 2 injuries are a significant risk for compensatory injury to each other (and other lower extremity injuries).

well thats no good...

Maybe Patterson’s injury history pushed him down draft boards. I’m ok taking an injury risk with upside late. Fair risk as a 6th. Hope he can play and play well, but it’s not the end of the world for the Texans if he cannot.

Cashman "tweeked" his hamstring in the joint practice and is resting from practice. The team is "uncertain" if he will play Saturday. Even with a grade I hamstring, 3 days of "rest and rehab" is a ticket for extended injury. I have no idea why there would be any consideration for return, especially for a preseason game.

Although Dell did warmups, he was held out of the game with "a tight leg muscle." He is "expected to return to practice relatively soon." Another reason why Dell didn’t play was load management after he put on a significant amount of mileage during the joint practice sessions this week. Although the "leg muscle" involved has not been officially revealed, it apparently a hamstring. Dell needs to give it a rest for a good part of the time before the Ravens game, or re-injury risks go straight up.

Howard is out of a cast and in a heavily supported splint. The Texans are still saying there is a chance for him to be there for the Ravens game. If he does try to return that soon, he needs to strongly protect his metacarpal which he fractured in 2 places .........with a "club." That will no doubt limit his effectiveness.

Just an aside comment regarding injuries...............I'm not sure that it is such a great idea to have joint practices, especially 2 in 1 week. The intensity in these practices comes close to that seen in games (which seems to be part of what coaches are wanting to get out of them.) However, many players are getting banged up in these intense practices and many are expected to play in a game just a couple of days later, leading to more or extended injuries. If the short week Thursday Night Football is not a "healthy" option, then the joint practices, especially 2 in 1 week is a worse idea. The NFL will eventually decrease the number of preseason games, while finding a way to heavily monetize joint practices.............and extend the season to 18 regular games.

...when u say "will no doubt limit his effectiveness"....would it be any worse than what we have seen at RT so far??? LOL

Lopez pulled his hamstring yesterday. Of course, as usual the report is that "it's not a long-term" thing." Any grade of hamstring injury before the season even begins is a worrisome thing. :shades:
