Houston Texans 2024 OTA’s and Mandatory Mini Camp

Really glad to hear Lassiter is being played on the outside. I think the classic adage of make them show you they can't is always the way to go.

For me the criticism for Lassiter is always the 40 time, but never about his actual on field play. That to me is really telling.

I've already watched a half dozen clips of Okudah getting beat over the top, but his 40 time was good so it's never brought up. That's bad football analysis in my opinion.

Frankly, if Okudah looks bad (as long as he does appear physically limited), I feel good about him. My assumption is that we identified his potential and some issues that needed to be coached up... He is just beginning to receiving the coaching. I am interested in where he is at in late August and how the coaches feel about him as training camp gets rolling.

Lassiter's college tape shows a lot of handsy coverage on deep routes. Quicker than fast was the term Joel Buchsbaum used to describe a player like Lassiter. In shell coverage, Lassiter will have help over the top. I think you'll only see Stingley in true man coverage.

Anything in the 4.4s usually means media types aren't going to call the player slow even if they get regularly beat over the top.

I bet we could watch a game this season where Okudah gets beat over the top 3 times and the one time Lassiter does every media type and even some posters on the board will question whether he should be played on the outside.

To make it even worse it will probably be on a press man play where even if you ran a 4.2 if the receiver beats you good enough on press you're getting beat over the top no matter what.
Good thing is, if Stingley's healthy it will allow S help over the top for Odkudah. Although I think if healthy Okudah is a large upgrade over Nelson.

Okudah has the god given ability to be a very good CB. He just needs to stay healthy.

That being said it's much easier to run past an un-agile guy than an agile one and Lassiter has ELITE agility and change of directions skills.

There's a reason elite route runners make better WRs than guys who run fast 40 times.
Yes but I would have been even more impressed if Kool-Aid was still there when we took Lassiter.

Give me quick over fast anytime especially if quick has Good Feet, balance and hip swivel.

If he wasn't 'receiving the coaching' in 2021 and '22 under Aaron Glenn in Detroit then I don't know where he could expect to receive it from..

The two guys I’m hearing the most positive buzz about is Green and Lassiter. Then Several honorable mentions like Metchie, Stover, Azeez, Dell, and even Diggs. Not hearing much either way about the new rookie safety, Bullock.

It’s extremely early…and I’ll hold my excitement until the pads come on 6 roughly weeks from now…but IF Green really has fully healed, put in the work and becomes what he was drafted to become, that’s basically like getting both first and second rounders for the line this year…

I am conflicted watching practice footage. On one hand it’s good to see players in some sort of action this time of year.

But I remember JJ making a comment that I agree with awhile back. The social media era makes guys take less risks in practice. You’re supposed to try new things and sometimes fail in practice. But now, if you lose a rep it gets posted online and fans will blast you for losing a practice rep. Then sportstalk radio uses that footage to fill their airtime in June. “Can you believe how bad ____ looked that one play in practice?! What are the team’s options to replace them?!”

good point. I had not thought about those complications.

Practice footage is HIGHLY selective.............the selection of clips can either make a player look like superstar or a fumble bumble.

Just some thoughts regarding your post...

I respect JJs opinion and i understand practice is where you want to try something out, however when youre a franchise player or secure in your spot like JJ was you've got the freedom to do that.

Most of the guys on the roster dont fall under that umbrella so they cant afford to be out there just trying stuff. And even for a guy like JJ who had some freedom to try things id guess that 99% of his practice time was spent refining fundamentals.

As far as guys not wanting to look bad because of what radio hosts and fans say, id guess most guys care more about what the coaches think. 1 bad play (or good play) isnt going to sway the coaches much. Theyre going to get a better idea of who guys are over the course of weeks of practice and pre season games and even throughout the season.

Does someone want to tell Kamari that locksmiths unlock things?

This is kind of related. I let my kids call me a mother f…..r. Cause I did to their mom. And I will do it again.

I remember when I was a unruly teenager, me and my Mom got into a big argument, and I drove her over the edge. She got so mad at me she called me a son of a_bitch.. without skipping a beat I said, "well if I'm a son of a *****, what does that make you?" She stood there, couldn't think of a verbal response, but she had a physical response.. She slapped the **** out of me. 😁 I deserved it, we're super close now and talk every day.

I told my son that I brought him into this world, I could take him out and make another one that looked just like him. He looked me dead in the eye and said no you can't. You'd have to get back with my mom to do that. I had nothing. My son was about 8 at the time.

When I had Lassiter in my mock drafts you blasted the selection. Have you changed your mind form some OTA footage?
TBD, I didn't think of him as a young Kareem Jackson at the time. He could possibly be a very good slot CB. I still dont think he's a long term outside CB. I also hope they cross train him for a S position as well.

Are you in Atascosita yet?

Yeah, got home on 29/30 April. Since arriving:

1. Drove to Dallas to pick up our POV from the VPC Center.
2. Had our yard re-sodded. Watering 2x daily when it hasn’t rained.
3. Got a Friday night Stros game in with my son.
4. Replaced our heat exchangers in the attic while adding HEPA Filters to the units.
5. Replaced the 23 year old water heater….2nd floor location didn’t want me to continue rolling the dice.
6. Received 799 lbs of Express Move items. Me and my wife just flat out were running on fumes, but finally got those things put away.
7. Dropped the T-Bird in for some servicing. It seems like the Thunder has been returned to the Bird.
8. Also had the grandkids (twins) for the last three weekends.
9. HHG’s arrived today….finally have our master bed in the room and got to kick the Sealy Air Mattress to the garage. Will share this…..per usual, the bed arrived with everything except the primary supports (4). So me and my buddy went to Lowe’s and grabbed a 4x4 and felt pads. Bed is fully together and we can finally get a great night of sleep.
10. Also squeezed in a visit to my brother who lives in Frankston, TX which is 40 minutes south of Tyler.

So a few more weeks of getting things organized. Then we can knock out our Master Bathroom project and the replacement of our front and back doors.

We hope to have all this completed by end of August. We plan to schedule a little break in Galveston after Labor Day since my wife has never been there.

We’re looking forward to seeing this all wind up so we can start acting like retirees.

Enjoy it man, you deserve it. Thanks for your service. When things slow down some let me know and we can meet at MoJo's for a beer.

Seems like you're a regular handyman, you need to come by my house. LOL

Lol, welcome to being retired. From my experience you already are acting like a retiree. Stuff just never ends.
