Welcome to Houston David Culley, Head Coach

I don't like the hire - that doesn't mean it will be a bad one.

I wanted either a young creative head coach (like Joe Brady), or one of the highly praised coordinators (like Bienemy or Saleh) or an experienced head coach that had success in the past (Pederson). This hire to me looks like the Texans think again, they are the smartest guy in the room - and that usually backfires.

That being said I of course will give him a chance and can't wait to see who his DC and On-line coach will be!

Couldn’t be more underwhelmed by this news. I’d put Culley alongside Josh McCown as a “wtf?” Interview.

I’m ready for this team to be awful now, anything better will be a surprise.

Hope I’m wrong, but I hate the Caserio hire and think there were better candidates out there for the HC.

Part of me wonders if this is a tank season and they’ve hired accordingly.

OC being Kelly is fine, but he needs a big overhaul of the OL and RB coaching which was a problem he inherited.

That D has been awful for years and I worry that RAC/Weaver may be kept on.

So.....the Texans are going with David Culley as HC. Lovie Smith would be the new DC. I guess Caserio has convinced Culley that sticking with Tim Kelly would be the most prudent thing to do at OC.

Maybe Caserio and company will ask Culley to hire Josh McCown as the teams new QB Coach / Passing Game Coordinator. He spent time in 2020 working with both Kelly and Watson......and, if the FO really wants McCown with the team going forward then they'll make it happen.

If Caserio really wanted to impress me, he'd try to hire Patriots Co-OL Coach, Cole Popovich away from Belichick. He's a young OL coach who's very good at coaching his players up. Maybe Popovich would want out of the "Co" thing and look forward to developing his own OL.

With this being said.....2021 ought to be riveting!!!! All we can do as fans is hope for the best. I hope we get the beautiful tooth fairy instead of a fat arse squating over our faces while delivering a crop dusting of fairy dust and a case of pink eye.

That's my point. Culley and Frazier for that matter. If the Texans wanted to wait until after the superbowl, they could have. Culley nor Frazier interviewed for any other head coaching job. None!

So the smart set douchebags like River McCown are upset that....David Culley's a Christian?

Oh no bro. The horror!! Surely no Christians have ever been involved in playing and coaching football!

I mean maybe we should have hired a Marxist revolutionary or something maybe that'll make these people happy.

Annoying.

He's got to get his staff together & watch 16 weeks of bad football before the combine.
Here's a novel idea. They fired the coach after week 4 correct? Why not hire a out of work gm or 2 or 3 to evaluate your team and the players until the end of the season. Get those suggestions and give them to the gm you hire and see what he thinks. This should be known before you hire the coach. Also, why haven't the director of scouting been fired yet or the oline coach? I. Could go on, but it doesn't matter. This just stinks to me. I mean Culley has been under Reid in some capacity for half of his pro coaching career, why would he want Kelly if there are plenty of Reid disciples out there who know the language offensively?

I don't think anyone is upset that we hired a Christian headcoach. His religion doesn't matter to the majority of fans! But some are a little worried, that his religion might have played a role in his hiring - and that would be bad. Hire a football coach for his football knowledge and people skills, not because he is a man of God.

That being said I don't believe the Texans are actually this delusional and his religion didn't play any role in the hiring...

I rarely do this but I’m going full blown conspiracy theory here, read at your own peril:

I believe Culley is a sacrificial lamb given the state of our current franchise. I believe the Texans hired him because JE, and perhaps NC, believe they can exert influence over how the team is run. Id be shocked if DWs agent doesn’t get him on the first plane out of town. Prepare for a couple years of vying for the top pick in the draft. Culley will be fired and replaced by Josh McCown.

As a Texan I truly hope to be pleasantly surprised by Culley, but I think we’re heading into a dark period with JE at the helm. I hope I’m wrong

The media is spinning it that way, since they’ve been going after Easterby Christianity.

Well there are reasons hes not with any outlets officially covering the team.

A, you don’t know that, B, no such thing as “the right hire”. In 2014 BoB was “the right hire” according to fans. you also do nt know that Culley ISNT “the right hire”.
yes, actually I do. Name the position/opening that Lovie Smith or McCown would have either fit into or even interviewed for going forward - none, zero.

sure, nothing is guaranteed. There’s a chance that Watson comes back to the team and suddenly becomes the lowest rated passer in the league. However, it’s obviously not likely given his past body of work. So taking the body of work for this new 65-year old hire I pretty comfortable saying the odds are strongly in favor of it not working out for him as a HC - and that’s especially true given the terrible positioning of the franchise. Hope for his sake I am wrong because he seems like a really solid person.

I'm ok with this hire on the face of it. I'm not concerned with his lack of coordinator status on his resume because he's not being hired to be a coordinator. He has assistant HC on his resume and has coached under some great HCs. He should have a leg up in knowing how to manage a successful NFL team.
I'm very interested to see who he brings in as coordinators. I'll give him at least a full season before I start

Ravens passing game coordinator doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
Just to play devils advocate he has helped turn Lamar Jackson into a dual threat QB.

I love the idea of a coach who will be a leader and allow his coordinators to get on with their job. If you are worried about an offensive minded HC who O had bad categories, wait till we do the deep dive on Illinois’ D if Lovie Smith is hired as DC.

The only way this makes sense is if they know whatson is leaving for sure and They just need a Patsy for a couple of years while they rebuild. If Watson stays this means he picked the head coach.

This is my thinking too—if he’s not good at calling plays, he can still be a good HC by managing coordinators who are. I do wish that I hadn’t read so many discouraging things about his work history, though...
Can you share links to what you've read?

As a Michigan fan I can tell you that Lovie's defenses at Illinois were absolute garbage.

Conservative and outdated.

For the record, an assistant HC title is given to a coach that is otherwise making a lateral move. For the Ravens to hire Culley from the Bills, a promotion would be needed. Since Culley wasn’t getting a coordinator job, the assistant head coach title was given. It’s not like Harbaugh gave up any responsibilities. Culley was the WR coach.

They were conservative and outdated when Smith was in the NFL.

Let’s not pretend these assistant coaches are Culley hires. The Texans brought Smith in for an interview before they offered Culley the HC job. These assistants are being foisted on Culley. He is not choosing the offense or defense that will be run. Can you imagine any other situation like this in the NFL? The Texans are taking dysfunction to unseen heights.

He's been Assistant HC in Baltimore & KC, like Reid was before he became a HC.
That’s fine, but it didn’t take Reid 27 years in the league to become HC.

6 other HC jobs were available and NONE had Culley on their radar. No one!!! Korn Ferry, Porn Fairy, no one had this guy as even an afterthought. But somehow the Jack Prayery search firm has him at the top of the list.

Whether Culley turns out to be a good hire or not, isn’t really issue to me, it’s the process. The Texans take the most unconventional, backassward way to get a guy that has never even interviewed for HC in 27 years (according to what I’m hearing, that is). But certainly a guy who wasn’t a blip on anybody’s radar.

Only the Texans.

If Watson stays it's because the Texans didn't trade him. Watson cannot force a trade. If Watson plays, it's probably because he's under contract and some cooler heads got to him and talked him out of a public relations nightmare, being egged on, in the media, by people with no skin in the game.

So success or failure matters less than the process used? I'd rather see a successful "out of the box" hire than a failure brought about by "consensus".

Lol.

It keeps getting worse. The entire top of the football side is completely unqualified except for Crennel

:spit:

You mean the guy that was HC when we just went 4-12. The guy that has lost us a lot of games with the "bend don't break" idea of defense, got to remember covering the Saints to keep them from getting a TD when all they needed was FG range or where all we needed for the number 2 seed was for them to stop Philly 1 time.

That’s fine too. If it works out, great. Again though, 27 years in the league, never interviewed for HC, 6 other openings, on no one’s list....I mean out of the box is one thing. An owner taking draft advice from a homeless guy is another.

I like the hire, I watched Harbaugh completely change the Ravens game plan when Jackson was drafted and Culley was a big part of that. For those that are worried about the Ravens being last in passing I will tell you no Ravens fan ever thought that we were going to win a game on Jackson's arm. In fact games where they force Jackson to throw are the stuff we have nightmares about. Even still the Ravens WRs have been able to force defenses to stay honest and let Jackson be Newton 2.0 which is his strength. I'm not worried at all about his lack of being an OC or DC because we just saw what happens when a HC tries to be the OC to. Culley has rubbed shoulders with some of the best players and coaches and they all have high praise for him.

Age doesn't bother me so much, if you have the money 65 is the new 55, hell you can't even retire at 65 any more. The fact he is a first time HC does worry me a little because the world does look different from the captain's chair no matter how long you have been a first officer and I didn't want a first time HC after the OB mess. However if they are going to hire a first time HC one that has that much experience and is that well thought might have been the way to go.

I'm glad they didn't hire EB. There are just to many red flags with him, first and foremost why has he interviewed with every team that needed a HC in the last 3 and none hired you? Then if the rumor of him wanting roster control and to be the highest paid HC are true then yeah definitely don't want him because he hasn't done anything to prove he deserves either.

Was Culley my first pick, no. Would he have been the guy I thought they would go with, no. Overall though I don't think its near as bad as everyone here is making it sound, of course didn't matter who was hired this place would crucify them before they even got in the building because thats what we do for fun around here, and I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe we should, I don't know let Caserio and Culley actually have a draft or sign a F/A or hire their staff or, and this is really out there, play a game before we decide the end has come.

That's a possibility, but I've wondered if the team and Cully didn't discuss Lovie previously and jointly decided to interview him. I would assume Cully mentioned a few potential staff members during his interview
