2nd round DJ Swearinger

This is typical collateral damage heading into the second season of a regime change.

Exactly. I have long said that it would be a matter of time before O'Brien hacks up this roster. None of this is surprising.

Just wait until he gets his hands on the tight ends group. If I were Garrett Graham, I'd be putting my house on the market...

It's a sellers market... no rush

It was quite easy to read Kubiak's lips from that camera angle. He was yelling at him, "What the **** are you DOING?!"

That being Kubiak's last game as a Texan put Swearinger in my doghouse. I eventually eased up and waited for him to mature, but he's incapable.

I don't predict he'll continue as a problem player, I just think his stunted emotional growth will cap his professional growth.

IMHO he is more of a knucklehead than a problem child. BUT, if there was ONE person on the team that you did NOT want to have an influence over your 1:1 pick, he would be the person.

Somewhere out there between the on field lack of development, locker room and/or coaching staff clash, and the off field influences is the real story in all of this. One that we may never really know fully as fans.

One thing for sure though. One does not simply let a 2nd rounder that played 1000+ snaps go after two years without compensation for something that wasn't egregious. I just can't see this as OB saying, "I'm cutting you because you don't fit our system", especially when he is thin/inexperienced at DB. He was going to be gone whether they found a suitor or not. That is telling.

Since it is quite evident that Lovie, being a less than stupid coach, could not have picked Swearinger up to play in his cover 2, the only remaining logical explanation is that Lovie found him to possess great potential as a special teamer.:spy:

OR...they picked him up hoping THEY could find a trade partner...

Yeah, I agree that "something" must have happened this offseason. This in spite of all the times that I yelled "GODDAMMIT SWEARINGER" at the tube last season. I guess he was just as much of a knucklehead off the field as he was on the field. Or worse.

Being involved in the Clowney 3 AM Dog Bite situation as well as his other problems probably was the straw that broke the camel's back as far as remaining with the team so they started shopping him. The premature post on facebook probably just eliminated the desire to get something back in return.

Get rid of him at any cost became the final decision.

I wonder if he ever plays another snap of football or if we'll see him on the police report in the next few years?

In fairness to DJ, his two main off field incidents involved his dog biting a friend at his house (granted that friend was Clowney) and the truck/body shop incident, which technically ended up being a non-issue as payments were made for services rendered. Am I missing something else during his Texans tenure?

Not saying that thugs don't make Jesus posts on Instagram or Twitter, but dude makes a LOT of Jesus posts on Instagram and Twitter. As someone stated before, this is more about being immature than being a thug. If he does end up on a blotter, I see it more because he is a knucklehead that would surround himself with the wrong people, as opposed to him being that wrong person that others surround themselves with.

I hope he finally grows up, but some people never do as evidenced by message boards in general.

Actually - that image I posted was a gif and got changed to a jpg when I uploaded it. Here's the original gif:

What a terrible draft class...

Referencing Jesus multiple times doesnt exactly place one on a moral high ground: Jimmy Swaggert, Adolf Hitler, and the worst of them, Peter Poppoff http://youtu.be/XN94yO-uYf4

Do you always operate in hyperboles?

Dude quotes a lot of Scripture and has a general positive/excited vibe to his post patterns. His feeds aren't littered with guns and hoes and dog fights. That doesn't make him Mother F'ing Theresa, but he also isn't going to wind up on a blotter just because he is a knucklehead NFL bust black man with dreads, a pit bull and the Batmobile.

Chris Meyers on the radio now. Stating he doesn't believe Swearinger said he wasn't going to play special teams. Is not buying that at all. Says OB could have been talking about someone else or just hamming up his story.

Says he need to continue working on being a pro. One of the most athletic players he's ever seen. One of the hardest workers. No doubt he'll be a great NFL player.

Said he has a ton of respect for him.

He said Swearinger called him this off season to pick his brain on becoming a better pro and he took it as a great sign of respect. He did say he needs to continue working on becoming a better pro, but it takes some guys longer than others but based on what he's seen he has no doubt that he'll get there.

Speaking very highly of him and seemed to be leaning towards the decision to cut him coming from upstairs.

Funny how not liking a player suddenly leads to "locker room cancer" and "police blotter". Suddenly playing video games at YOUR house all night long is on par with Pacman Jones type incidents.

Myers has no doubts that he will be a GREAT player?

Swearinger per PFF safety ranking: (credit to CND)

2013 71 out of 86
2014 78 out of 87

He needs to focus on being an AVERAGE player first. He wouldn't be the first physically gifted, hard working player to not be able to put it all together as a pro.

If you're up after 2 AM and not doing a job, I'm immediately suspicious of the activity. If you get up at 2 AM to start your day, that's another matter entirely.

Could you guess I'm a MORNING person?

Or you're MUCH older than the average NFL rookie?

He's probably basing his opinion off of things like seeing him in action in person.

I'm losing respect for PFF, but I always consider job 1 for receivers to be CATCHing the ball and job 1 for safeties and linebackers is to TACKLE, not hit.

I don't realy think Swearinger is all that great. He is pretty consistently missing tackles. Obviously, he got epically trucked bad in the one game, missed a crucial tackle on a guy out in the flats early in the season, among others. He's been caught a few times in coverage holding because he was beat.

His attitude problem is terrible. He doesn't look like he listens to his coaches either. I know the team is on a horrible losing streak and you may not love your coach, but if you are a rookie and you are making back to back bonehead plays, just stfu and listen to your coach. He can't even do that. He cost us points and then is still talking back to the coach. That whole episode showed me much of what I need to know about him. I don't think that's something you "grow out of," more likely it's just something that is in him. He just looks like he isn't in control of himself. Controlled rage is good on the field, but nobody wants a guy that can't control himself.

Look at this draft class guys. It's horrendous. The entire class, outside of Hopkins, is bad or was injured early on. I can't remember a draft class that contributed less in its first year.

Great post.

The more I hear about this release the funkier it seems. I fear we'll never get the true story. O'Brien grew up - from an NFL viewpoint - in PatriotLand. I wonder if he'll ever be truly up front about anything.

Just wait until he gets his hands on the tight ends group. If I were Garrett Graham, I'd be putting my house on the market...

They paid money to bring Graham back... he was an UFA I believe. If they were just chopping heads, they'd have kept OD, let Graham walk & cut OD this year.

Letting OD go, bringing Graham back only to cut Graham a year later doesn't make a lot of sense.

All this proves is that some of the guys he wants were already here, like JJ. He is molding this team into HIS team, for better or worse on a timetable of HIS choosing. It's what I would expect from any good manager.

What's that got to do with bringing Graham back?

I know I'm in the minority and will say I'm going to miss Swearinger. His attitude wasn't even as bad as many people are making it out to be.

He was immature in they way he would celebrate after a tackle, but some people here are making him out to be a thug like Pac Man Jones.

I wish him all the best.

Besides his perceived immaturiity issues,I could see the Texans getting fed up with Swearinger's on the field performances. Coming out of Southern Carolina, there was no doubt that he was a brutal hitter.......that he would consistently combine that with being an extremely reliable wrap-up tackler.

As a whole, college receivers are slower and run much less complicated routes than in the NFL. In the NFL, since receivers are faster and more capable of "tricky/elusive" routes, safeties must many times choose between a devastating hit and a secure wrap-up. Swearinger could never get it through his thick skull, that in the NFL he was no longer capable of trying to deliver both in a controlled fashion without his most important team goal.......tackling...........suffering.

I tend to doubt that his cranial wiring ever becomes anything that looks different than a glob of spaghetti that has just been thrown into a dinner bowl.

It would be accepting that Graham was not a good choice............and moving on.

My only issue with that, is that you'd expect good coaching to fix that. Dj was in position to make a lot of plays. That's got to count for something. He's talented. & if he's as hard a worker as Myers (who I respect as a pro) says he is...

I can't see them straight up cutting him this early in the league year for problems coaching should be able to fix. It's only his second year, first year with these coaches.

Somewhere in between is probably the truth, which to me sounds like a lack of maturity and understanding of consequences. I doubt this came about without any attempts to help him grow/coach him up... not a surprise. I have to admit I kinda enjoyed having him as a blow-up artist and LOL'd at his schtick... but I only had to deal with him on Sundays.

DJ is 23 and now has received a dose of reality that hopefully pushes him to alter his trajectory on and maybe off the field. I'm pulling for him to succeed and become one of the only plus players out of a very disappointing Safety draft class.

Speaking very highly of him and seemed to be leaning towards the decision to cut him coming from upstairs.
What does that mean? Which/who upstairs?

This was Kubiak's last game as the Texans coach.

Classic, great entertainment.

I don't ever think BOB will get that look because he will A. remove said player from the field. B. Cut him the next day.

Instead Gary was the one that got cut. Wade/Joseph's looks were awesome as well. Good times

Those looks say, "You are getting us fired right now."

On the lengthy list of things gone wrong in the 2013 season, you can put Schaub's meltdown at the top, but this is the picture that sums it all up.

Can someone refresh my memory, what did Dj do? Was it roughing a QB out of bounds?

yeah, I agree. I initially bought the special teams story, assuming it was legit. Now, not so much.

I never cared much for players who showboat instead of making fundamentally solid plays, but I never perceived him as lacking potential to improve. I actually enjoyed his personality on his radio show and just hoped he'd improve over time on the field like Kareem has improved over the years.

I'm a little surprised they got nothing for him and did not keep him on the roster to eventually try to get something for him as other teams find they need safety help. Cutting him at this point speaks to motives that we cannot discern without insight from those making decisions, and like you said, we'll never get the true story in that regard.

3 penalties on the day - 2 back to back. On 3rd and 1 taunting after an incomplete pass. Then on 1st and 10 on the next play, defensive holding negating an Eddie Pleasant INT. Jax added a FG going into the half 17 to 7. Then in the 3rd a face mask with the next play being a TD pass to go up 24 to 10.

Good Lord you're out of touch. These days it is very common for younger people to stay up at all hours playing video games. Very common.
The fact that this incident happened at that hour is almost completely irrelevant. Despite whatever conclusion you've jumped to, there is nothing inherently wrong with being awake at a friend's house at that time of day.
Any nefarious scenario running through your head is one that was created there, in your head. There is no evidence to support any of your conjecture.

It would make sense if O'Brien looked at Graham and said, "Yeah, you know, I thought he was the guy, but he no longer is."

O'Brien has no hesitation about fixing mistakes, regardless of when someone was signed, how much they make or where they were drafted.

It would be accepting that Graham was not a good choice............and moving on.

Exactly. I really wish people would understand that choices made last year have no bearing on choices this year. This coach is still tweaking this roster; if he has an idea that he could do better at tight end, Graham is gone. Simple as that.

Looks like the McNair's/Rick/BOB disagree with this post.

It's quite telling that Rick wasn't able to trade DJ.

Ugh. I got a headache just remembering all that. I was watching with a buddy and we were both yelling, "Why don't they bench Swearanger???"

I will never understand why Kubiak and Wade let him continue to play in that game.

This was that "Problems go way, way deeper than Schaub not being able to get it done anymore" moment. It's when I think the last wheel came off.
