NFL Random Thought of the Day

I'm playing Civ 5 on one screen with the draft on the other screen. It's still a while before we can tear apart the Texans first pick. LOL

We're Texans. We ain't gotta wait for chit.

The dude sucks. Short arms, heavy feet, injury history... two rounds too early.

Unless there's a shutdown corner left at our pick, they'd better frickin' take some type of o-lineman. Anything else will piss me off. LOL

The NFL draft drew record numbers both on site and on television.

The league said Monday that more than 600,000 people attended the draft over the three days in Nashville, easily eclipsing the 250,000 who came to watch two years ago in Philadelphia.
Nielsen reports that the draft on ESPN, ABC and NFL Network averaged 6.1 million viewers at any given time over the three days. It averaged 5.5 million viewers last year, which was the first time that all seven rounds were on broadcast television.

Looks like Nashville knocked it out of the park but next year in Vegas is probably gonna really set the bar high.
I really enjoyed watching the Draft again ( well accept for a couple of the Texans choices?).
My only complaint was not getting to watch it on the NFLNetwork as our internet provider U-Verse dropped them awhile back but without Mayoc hey probably wasn't as
entertaining as in past years.

A real legend has died.

Colts legend Gino Marchetti died on Monday
Posted by Josh Alper on April 30, 2019, 11:10 AM EDT

Gino Marchetti, one of the star players of the Colts championship teams in 1958 and 1959, died on Monday.

Marchetti had pneumonia and died with his wife Joan by his side at a hospital in Pennsylvania. He was 93 years old.

“I kissed him and he knew me and smiled,” Joan Marchetti told the Baltimore Sun. “That was Gino’s way of saying goodbye.”

Marchetti served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He went to the University of San Francisco and was drafted in 1952 by the New York Yanks, who became the Dallas Texans that year and made the move to Baltimore in 1953. Marchetti would play defensive end for the team through 1966 and was named an All-Pro every year from 1956 to 1964.

Former Lions quarterback Bobby Layne said being hit by Marchetti was “like running into a tree trunk in the dark” and plenty of other quarterbacks found themselves on the receiving end of hits by one of the league’s most feared pass rushers.

Marchetti was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1972 and was named a member of the NFL’s 50th and 75th Anniversary teams. The league will name a 100th Anniversary team this year and Marchetti should be on it.

At 6'4" and 254 lbs, he was a mammoth DE in his day.

Offer him something reasonable, today.
He had a very good rookie season but has not progressed - I wonder what gives?
If Texans want him they may have to pay dearly to get him in the building now and if they wait...

"But don’t expect any to sign immediately. It just doesn’t make sense for teams to rush.
Pro Bowlers like Ziggy Ansah, Eric Berry, Ndamukong Suh, and Muhammed Wilkerson are still available, but there’s no benefit for teams to rush to sign them. First off, there’s a May 7 cutoff where if some teams sign these players, it would count against the compensatory pick formula, which is awarded based on teams that lose eligible free agents. Second, the longer teams wait, the smaller the salary demands get for the player and their agent. Salary caps get pinched tighter following the draft and demand for specific positions dwindles while supply remains stagnant, thus driving down the price.
As has become tradition, the next big wave of free-agent signings will likely come during training camp, as most veterans prefer to avoid the malaise of practice in the summer heat while still getting the benefit of a full yearly salary. So buckle up for plenty of speculation and suspense until then, because the midway point of the main attraction is just getting going."

I know there is a snarky comment about Davis fitting right in with the other veteran tackles signings available, but this is a talented player with an extensive injury history.
Anthony Davis is only 29, with just a little over 4 years of service time. He was just 20 when he started his 1st NFL game. Strictly a RT. I think he could still play. Davis should probably get an MRI and/or a CT scan (don't know which is the best) to see if he's risking further damage, though.

Bears cut two of their four kickers
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 5, 2019, 7:49 PM EDT

As the Bears desperately attempt to upgrade at kicker, they’re paring down the roster.

After wrapping up a rookie minicamp at which the kicking competition was the most-watched event, the Bears released two kickers, Redford Jones and John Baron.

That leaves two other kickers, Elliott Fry and Chris Blewitt, as the only ones currently on the 90-player roster.

Four other kickers — Justin Yoon, Spencer Evans, Emmit Carpenter, and Casey Bednarski — tried out for the team last week, but none has made it to the active roster.

After the Bears’ postseason ended with a Cody Parkey missed field goal in their loss to the Eagles, the Bears got rid of Parkey and looked to improve by bringing in a bunch of legs and giving them all a look. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Bears bring in another kicker before training camp, but for now, it’s down to Fry and Blewitt.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Bednarski was so excited about winning Friday's competition against Jones that he did a backflip....................Nagy, the Bears HC was not impressed as he referenced Bill Gramatica tearing his ACL while celebrating a field...............and today Bednarski received the axe...........

Cam Newton: Shoulder’s feeling great, still no timetable to start throwing

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

Newton has not been "right" since his 2017 rotator cuff surgery. This recent surgery did not involve the rotator cuff or the labrum. Unfortunately, it involved articular cartilage damage, as reflected by the fact that never regained full range of motion of his shoulder.. He may return OK in the short term, but beyond that his career is likely to be negatively affected, as this is a situation of bone on bone with progressive arthritis.

Perhaps it is no coincidence they drafted Will Grier in the 3rd round.

NFL Network shows slashed, tensions rise after $20M cuts
By Andrew Marchand
May 8, 2019 | 11:50am | Updated

The NFL Network is being forced to cut $20 million out of its projected budget and, in the process, already has eliminated at least five shows, including one that featured Deion Sanders, The Post has learned.

The less-than-hoped-for budget has made negotiations with on-air personnel tense, and there is a feeling some will either not be retained or be forced to take pay cuts, according to sources.

The moves have been made as part of the NFL’s overall budget, which includes what is expected to be an amped-up celebration of the NFL’s 100th season this year. NFL Network has apparently absorbed part of the project into its budget.

NFL Network is definitively cutting five programs. Sanders’ “21 & Prime,” “Power Rankings,” “Pick ‘em,” “Playbook” and “Mic’d Up” are off the air. The future of the weekend edition of “Good Morning Football” is in question.

In response, the NFL Network said it was actually upping its investment, but it was shifting where the spending is taking place with the NFL 100 celebration.

Can't help but think that this has something to do with U-verse and Direct TV NOW cancelling The NFL Network and The Redzone Channel due to unreasonable terms proposed by the NFL.

Former Packers G.M. Ted Thompson diagnosed with autonomic disorder
Posted by Josh Alper on May 8, 2019, 11:49 AM EDT

Former Packers General Manager Ted Thompson released a statement on Tuesday announcing that he has been diagnosed with an autonomic disorder.

Thompson, who was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame last weekend, said in the statement that he has consulted with team doctors and outside physicians about the disorder. The autonomic nervous system controls the human body’s involuntary functions and, per the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of disorders can include “problems with the regulation of heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, perspiration, and bowel and bladder functions.” Fatigue, weakness and cognitive impairment can also be symptoms.

In the statement, Thompson, who played 10 years in the NFL, said that complications related to the disorder contributed to his decision to step down as G.M. after the 2017 season.

“I have been diagnosed with an autonomic disorder,” Thompson said in the statement released by the team.”I feel that it’s important to mention that based on the test results and opinions of medical specialists, they feel that I do not fit the profile of someone suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. … Late in the 2017 season, [Packers president] Mark Murphy and I had a conversation about my health and future with the Packers. At that time, we mutually agreed that it was in the best interests of myself and the organization to step away from my role as General Manager.”

Thompson said it is his “hope and belief” that he can overcome the disorder. We wish him all the best in those efforts.

Sad news for a former Oiler.

Giving up an $8 million roster bonus (and $3 million salary). Must be serious.

The Dolphins Xavien Howard will be made the highest-paid NFL CB. According to Adam Schefter, it's a 5-year, $76.5 million extension that includes $46 million guaranteed.

NFL TO LAUNCH YOUTH TRAINING PROGRAM IN LONDON 2 DAYS AGO
The NFL is launching the NFL Academy, a UK program that uses American football to create educational and professional opportunities for young people.

Based at Barnet and Southgate College in North London, the NFL Academy will provide student-athletes aged 16-18 with pathways into employment, further education and the potential opportunity to play NCAA college football in the United States.

“The Academy is a first-of-its kind initiative that will deliver against three key elements: education, character development and football,” said NFL UK Managing Director Alistair Kirkwood. “This is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of many young people, regardless of their experience of our sport. It is also an opportunity for us to create a pathway for players to get into the American college system and maybe even to the NFL.”
