Which off-season moves would you like the Texans to make? (Roster/FA)

Hes definitely an upgrade when he plays, but he has served two suspensions for substance abuse and has had surgeries to repair damage caused by Crohns Disease.

EDIT: Apparently Im too slow lol. Its a one year deal.
 
Henderson 27 starts during his four-year career but was replaced by head coach Sean McDermott in 2017, partly because he was going to be suspended for the first part of the year. His suspensions for substance abuse have also added up, to the tune of 14 games over his career. The next suspension will wipe out an entire season in the escalating substance abuse program. But there’s a catch; Henderson claims his marijuana use is medicinal to deal with his Crohn’s disease because the marijuana doesn’t upset his digestive track like other painkillers. It’s still against the NFL’s rules. Henderson comes to the Bills as a former seventh round pick, who fell to the late rounds due to drug use in college.

In 2015, Henderson missed the final three games of the season after he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease.[31]

In 2016, Henderson underwent surgery and another operation to remove all infected areas and reattach his intestines before announcing that he would return to the team.[32] Henderson was suspended for the first four games of the 2016 NFL season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.[33] On November 29, 2016, Henderson was suspended 10 games for a second violation of the NFL's policy and program for substances of abuse.[34][35] Henderson admitted that he used marijuana to deal with the pain from his Crohn's disease and the two intestinal surgeries from earlier in the year.

Gotta sympathize with this guy because if they should exempt anybody for the use of pot for pain and suffering should be him. Does the NFL have no policy of of exemptions
for grass for med purposes ? Dettach and reattach intestines - yikes that hurts just thinking about it.

Yeah, agreed. The policy is dumb anyway, whether for pain or recreation IMO.

It's a shame that he has not been given an exemption for the marijuana. Narcotics, steroids and anti-inflammatories will help with the Crohn's pain, but will ulcerate the lining of his already irritated/inflamed intestines. This is one case of the rare cases that I would encourage him to sue the NFL to be able to use this substance in the form of a non-high cannabis form. To clarify............the gastroenterologist caring for him legally prescribed this as some do due to the destruction of an already injured intestine. Crohn's is a terrible autoimmune disease, and its severity in Henderson's case demonstrated by 2 previous major intestinal resection surgeries, tells you how much he wants to play football............something that you would have to question in a number of Texans players prior and current.

Pretty much a pot is still mostly illegal in the US policy, but back to Henderson. appears to be a different type of signing for the Texans. though flawed background, he still has the attributes to be well above average. With it being one year, if he hits we are going to have to try to get a longer deal sooner than later.
 
I like both of these signings, although I want to see the dough on Colvin. If they can sign one more vet CB they could easily consider moving KJ to safety which strengthens both spots. If they can't sign one, then a CB becomes a priority in the 3rd round.

I didn't know a ton about Henderson, but I feel bad about the Crohn's situation. Hopefully he can find a legal substance that the league allows to control any pain because he appears to have the talent/athleticism to kick butt at RT.

I like that the player is betting on himself - if he stays healthy and out of trouble, I could definitely see a long term deal after the 18 season. And if not, then they dip back into the well again next off-season via draft/FA. And from the Texans perspective - I see it as low risk/high reward from a financial perspective.

From a talent/backup perspective I'd think Davenport would be the primary option if Henderson goes south due to health or drugs.

Solder may be a long shot at this point guys. Outside of something off the wall like a trade is there anyone else out there that is a decent LT or are we stuck with Davenport/rookie 3rd rounder? Neither of those seems like even a decent solution to protect Watson in 2018. They may have to throw the check book at Solder and tell him to write his own check. Even then, people are motivated beyond money at times so it's going to be a longshot imo.

A smart FO will hope for the best, but plan for the worst. So, let's look at alternatives. Let's assume for the moment Solder doesn't sign. What else is out there?

One of the reasons why the Astros and Rockets GM's are so much better. They don't have any issues spending money on star- superstar players.

Hopefully they land their big fish, Mr. LT Solders.

That sums it up pretty well about our situation at OT, actually both left and right tackle but mainly LT.
Somebody mentioned earlier that even next years (2019) first round pick is in play here which could be used to perhaps trade for a vet tackle currently on a roster or
move up, way up in this Draft for one of the top tackle prospects who might have some kind of realistic chance of playing/starting this year at LT.
Gain is gonna earn his money now as this initial free agency for him is turning out to be a real trial-by-fire.

The diagnosis of Crohn's is even less "desirable" than the diagnosis of another very serious autoimmune diease of the intestinal tract. Unlike Crohn disease, which can affect any part of the digestive system (small and large intestine [colon], ulcerative colitis typically causes inflammation only in the colon. The majority of patients suffering from Crohn's will undergo at least one surgical resection the bowel in the course of their disease. And after a resection, there is a 20–30% flare within the next year, with a 10% increase in each subsequent year. Each time a resection is performed, the patient will have some absorbtion and bowel movement issues due to the shortened distances that for travels. Furthermore, part of his lifelong medical maintenance regimen will be immunosuppressives, so that potential serious infections will always be a concern, not only intestinally, but from even small cuts and scratches.

QB David Garrard played with Crohn's for 5 years after he had a foot long portion of his small intestine removed. He had no need for further surgery, as he was well-controlled by his immunosuppressive medications. This is the best I can answer your question, because in essence remission is unpredictable.
 
Solder ain't all that and a bag of chips. I watched closely in the SB and I thought he had a terrific game, but overall his reputation is as an average LT and perhaps below average at pass blocking. Still, when you've been driving a 76 Pinto with a bumper held on by duct tape, a 2005 Ford Focus doesn't seem too bad. It's all about perspective.

And if the Focus is in the car lot with a lot of 99 Buick Centuries it begins to look like the cream of the crop, so you plop your money down and you take your chances.

The only good side to not signing Nate is that we won't have paid an average player like an elite player and there is something to be said for that IF they use some of that to strengthen other areas of importance.

And why not break the market on Solder? 15.5m per year would not be a bad thing so long as they can get out from under it after 2 or 3 years.

Would still leave them with serious money to go after Gaines and one or 2 lower tier guys who can come in and contribute.

I agree on him being average but we don’t have much of a choice so we have to make up for past mistakes by overpaying. It is what it is.

Would like to see us come away with Solder, EJ Gaines and Tre Boston to wrap up our foray into free agency.

Would feel very good about the OL and secondary with Fulton, Colvin and Henderson added alongside them.

The only “splash” player would be Solder but those 6 players represent upgrades at positions of need.

My perspective is that any other issues pale into insignificance when compared with our crippling OL last season.

They have a lot invested in young players on the offense going to waste because of it.

The WR corps youve got Hop putting up stats but deserves to be challenging for titles in the prime of his career. A couple of guys behind him with talent going to waste. TE, who knows what we've Got, but fielding a backup LT to help block at the position is hurting them.

QB and RB same thing. Decent and great talent not being utilised properly. All falling on the OL.

Holes on the D, well you have a couple important injuries returning, gotta hope Watt can be a player again. The backend, they still got money to make a move and improve. If you plug those 2 holes and find good developmental depth at 3 positions in the 3rd round then suddenly things don't look so bad.

So to me, overpaying that decent-but-not-great LT falls in line with his importance to our team and it's situation right now rather than conforming to where his value lies vs the rest of the league.

I'm also against sending a future 1st for a guy when you are mid way through developing hopefully a good starting LT in Davenport.
 
Well said Welsh Texan. It's not about how much a Player is worth based on his skill, but how much he is worth to us in our Situation. I would be perfectly fine to overpay Solder. Especially since we don't have to pay big bucks for the QB Position for the next couple of Seasons.

I like our moves so far. But still: Solder is the most important Piece. And I would like another Player in the secondary - I would be fine with resigning JoJo. Maybe we can even snag a TE?
 
No way he won't get offered at least 75 Million - that would be 15 Million per year. I could easily see him getting more than that. The question is: does he want to leave NE and is he willing to come to Houston.
 
Be open to trading JD if deal is good.

Is Savage gone? Don't think Savage is an option as backup QB.
Tell me again what was so great about giving a draft choice to get rid of Brock? Reminds me of a cat covering its ****.
Get some great position coaches. Get a time management/strategy coach. Oh wait we have BOB to cover all that.
Don't rely on BOB choosing a backup QB. Savage over Keenum, Brock, Mallett ..............................
