Which off-season moves would you like the Texans to make? (Roster/FA)

If we have have solid replacements for Kendall lamm, breno, clark, and sua filo I will be happy. So far we only have henderson, and reportedly fulton. Need 2 more OL. I would keep martin, move allen to LG.
Lamm can be replaced in draft.
LT - Davenport/FA
LG - allen
C- martin
RG - Fulton
RT - henderson/newton.

Still need 1 more tackle.

If they can get Solder the OL would be set, although I would still be for drafting a couple of guys for depth. Even if they dont get Solder, Henderson is still better than anything they put at LT last yr.

Rashaan Melvin another CB still on the market. Played well as the defacto # 1 CB for the Colts last season and has the size/length OB seems to covet in his DBs. Should be in the Colvin mold of signing a player who's best football is ahead of them. Also nice that we could weaken a division rival by signing him.

It's most definitely time to part ways with Newton.

I would like to see more situational pass rushers. This is a passing league and the Texans don't have enough pass rushers. JJ when healthy is a beast, Whitney is good, Clowney has to be schemed to get sacked.

That's your BS RS is always wrong spin. Offering a major contract proves they wanted him.

But nothing in the NFL except hindsight is "at any cost."
Plus steelb forget a very important word, free agent. I will agree, they could've franchise or transitional tagged him like the rams did Johnson, but they didnt.

Bouye could easily been locked up before he got to free agency. Issues were rumored prior to preseason Duane Brown was unhappy with his contract and probably hold out. Both these key foundation pieces were more than agreeable to remain Texans, but hard line policy from management dictated otherwise. I get it, I work for one myself, difference is they’re rare commodities and should be handled different than just a number. Does it really matter what Texans offered Bouye when only pushed to do something. Strikes me as transparent and disrespectful!

Bouye was offered a contract before the 2016 season and turned it down.

There was no hard line policy in play. That was one year left. He decided to play the season and field offers. Texans made another offer.

Not sure how you feel Bouye was disrespected.

Do you happen to have copy or link of this contract offer for Bouye in 2016?

If there is it might suggest just how strong armed, low balling own players Rick Smith was. That is disrespectful. If you don’t think so let’s compare it to what he got in 2017.

I don't remember details of the 2016 offer ever being leaked.

I'm sure it was way less. He hadn't had his good year yet. He was a promising developmental player. Absolutely nothing disrespectful in that.

Man, it seems like Solder may be waiting for Cleveland and Joe Thomas to make a move. If Thomas chooses to retire, then Solder knows that's where the stupid money will be coming from. If Thomas decides to stay, then Solder is going to give the Patriots the best shot at getting him re-signed. The money Solder stands to make on this new contract will keep him playing....where? It doesn't look like the Texans are in the mix.

So what would the next move or Plan B, C, or D be? I'm going to bracket FA's that I would pursue into 3 brackets, Low Cost, Mid Cost, High Cost. I seriously think the Low and Mid cost options could all be signed with plenty of Cap Money left to grab a few of the High Cost targets.

Low Cost
QB- Brandon Weedon / Knows the system and would be a cheap but effective backup.

RB- Adrian Peterson / Has a desire to finish his career with the Texans. It only works if the deal is Texans extremely friendly. I would like his mentoring for the other RB's and possibly his production. If Peterson could produce behind a better OL, then that could make Miller expendable which should add some additional funds back into the Cap Kitty.

RB- Alfred Blue / A simple and cost effective signing. Blue knows the offense and that's a plus. Blue has been running behind one of the worst OL's since he arrived in the NFL. Hopefully the Texans address this issue, not just for Blue but all their RB's, during FA and the Draft.

LT- Greg Robinson / If Solder is off the board....let me correct this...before Solder is off the board, I'd sign Robinson to the same contract given to Henderson...if Solder is gone, even Robinson's price may go up in this down LT market. If Robinson could just be 20% better than Clark and CO at LT for the season....that would probably be enough for Watson to continue marveling the NFL.

TE- Crockett Gilmore / I really wanted him in the draft. He's been effective when healthy and certainly wouldn't break the bank if the Texans wanted to see if 2018 is the year he enjoys a full and productive season.

Mid Cost
CB- TJ Carrie / He's poised to be a better CB than he was in Oakland and the Raiders didn't nearly have the Front 7 like the Texans could potentially roll out in 2018. If the Texans defense can get after QB's like previous seasons...Carrie could be surprising and cost effective.

WR- Justin Hunter / Another guy I really wanted in the draft. Former Bills WR before he was signed away by the Steelers. I think between Watson and O'Brien, they could put Hunter in a great position to be effective.

**I would sign this entire group if it were up to me. Lot of potential answers that will either elevate their games as starters or become decent to possibly better than decent backups. Most of these guys would only be around for 1-2 seasons before a decision would be needed in regards to their futures with the Texans.**

High Cost
RT- Cameron Fleming / He would provide a nice answer at RT. I would love to see a veteran give LT a whirl but RT would be his home if signed. Henderson would still be in a position to compete. Maybe Henderson becomes the Texans ST if Fleming can be signed.

RT- Andre Smith / Same as above.

LG- Justin Pugh / He would be inserted at LG immediately. I like the idea of him and Fulton forming the interior of the left side. The left side running game should get a big bump in production. If Pugh is signed, in my book, that makes Allen expendable, which puts some additional money back in the Cap Kitty.

CB- EJ Gaines / Would be a solid addition along with Aaron Colvin and TJ Carrie. This group makes KJax expendable and JJo a non-factor in FA for the Texans. KJo would have some tremendous competition for playing time. The plus side of this signing, the Texans could sit down with KJax and try to convince him to re-structure his contract or face being cut. It would also slow the Texans to move him to one of the S positions. Personally, I think he's been a FS all along.

SS- Kenny Vaccaro / He would be priority signing to fill the need at SS. He's in his prime right now and with the signing of Gaines, Colvin and Carrie, plus the moving of KJax to FS.....should put a nice big bow on the Texans defensive backfield situation.

**This would be advantageous to try and sign all these High Cost guys so in reality...if I could get Fleming or Smith, Pugh and Vaccaro, along with the rest of this class (Low & Mid), the Texans could be decently ready for 2018. No picks from the 2019 NFL Draft would be sacrificed and some of the signings would certainly change the focus of this years draft.**

I think Nate Solder stays in New England. This reminds me of the Namdi Asomaugh sweepstakes we were in and the ended up with Jospeh. The number two or three rated LT is much better than what we have so I have that deal in the works and pull the trigger.
Ian Rapoport

One free agent to watch today: #Patriots LT Nate Solder. As of last night, it sounded like #Giants or #Texans… and there wasn’t a lot of optimism that he’d return to New England.

6:10 AM - Mar 14, 2018

AJ McCarron still out there. He probably wants to go somewhere to start, but I would sign him to a two year deal. Not the ideal back up to DW, but would prove to be a useful back up if DW has injury problems going forward.

According to Ian Rap, as of last night, it was down to the Giants or Texans for Solder.
EDIT: Beat me to it :D

I will take a doom and gloom outlook.

It wouldn’t be the first time Ian Rap was wrong.

I can’t see Kraft letting the LT go that protects Brady. Especially after they let Jimmy G go to ease Brady’s concerns. They will do anything for Brady.

Kraft doesn‘t do bad contracts - and didn‘t they already draft a guy that was supposed to be the heir apparent for Solder? Solder will make much more than his talent level dictates, and NE doesn‘T usually give out those contracts. He is not a special player, but in this day and age, there are hardly any special left tackles out there.

I still believe the Texans are quiet right now, because Solder is far and away their priority. They will make everything in their power to get him here. But it‘s up to Solder.

I would like a shot at Gaines or Fuller as well - plus Sitton who was heavily rumored to be going to us. Maybe a TE...

Correct. There’s a reason they didn’t break the bank on any signings yet. Solder is the splash signing that has been targeted. Getting him or not will change how FA and the draft is approached the rest of this offseason.

Wasn't Rick's call alone.

Very well could have been OBrien who didn't want to spend more to save money for other needs.

Just like he thought Jeff Allen was a better value than Brooks

Tell me what exactly was Ricky's calls within the organization?

According to some, he wasn't responsible for anything. Yet, he's gonna. That should tell you something. But it won't.

I have always thought he deferred to the coaches going back to Kubiak. Not a fan of him because I don't think he's good at evaluating talent it setting a plan, just leaves it to coaches

You can say this same about this year's free agency.

Colvin was only a few millon per year cheaper than Butler.

At some point you have to balance what you want to pay, needs, and where the player is interested in going.

On the flip side, according to you, he's responsible for everything. "That should tell you something. But it won't." :D

No AP.
I sure hope we are not saving all our money for a Clowney contract.
So if we trade Clowney for draft picks does his 13,846,000 salary for 2018 become money we can use for FA?
We need so much more.
Just my thoughts

Quick question, how many Pro Bowls would Solder have played in if not for the Pats being in the Super Bowl? Other than this past season, I generally don't have any idea.

Per Ian Rapaport:

The #Browns are signing TE Darren Fells to a 3-year deal worth $12M, source said. That will help the run game immensely.

So far it's been a disappointed free agency for Texans fans, especially when our leading division opponents Jacksionville & Tennessee appear to have improved themselves more than we did. And worse of all apparently we aren't going to get any help at LT, our biggest need/concern by signing Solder so brace your selves guys.
And why are so many people still fuming and fussing about Rick Smith, now no longer on the scene ? OK he left us a mess in the offensive line but that's old news by now, right ?
C'mon fellas time to collect yourselves and move on.

No AP huh? I dunno man, Miller did not hit those lanes hard and kept those legs churning. Least AP tries to get them inches.

I had high hopes for Miller but was not impressed. Function on the O-line maybe, can always blame the O-line.

First hit and Miller is down on the ground. Watching Matt Fourte, CJ Anderson, Ajayi and Fournette and old Frank Gore...."the extra ummpphhhh"..... Maybe we missed judge Miller. I am all for one more year, but when we run 52% of our snaps, them inches means winning or losing.

Brandon Jacobs..... would have won us least 4 games last year. That man got the ball turned into the hulk and rip them lanes.

The fact that EJ Gaines hasn't been linked to any team seems like a positive sign. *knock on wood*

Things were quiet about Colvin and then it dropped that we had agreed on a contract.

I agree no Miller also.
Need another RB but not AP.
Look at posts a couple years ago. Never a Miller fan.

So if the Texans don’t sign solder the season is already over huh? Some of you guys man...I don’t understand how you guys can be a fan of any team much less the Texans with this defeatist attitude.

Clark starts at LT and Davenport does not pan out, then yeah season probably over cause we need 3 more linemen after we sign Solder......

we sign 3 linemen and draft 3 more linemen. Heck yeah! QB play and Line play is the the new NFL.

In need of reinforcements for their secondary, the Texans have reached a four-year, $34 million contract with Jacksonville Jaguars, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

The deal includes $18 million guaranteed.

The pending addition of Colvin comes one year after the Jaguars signed Texans free agent cornerback A.J. Bouye to a five-year, $67.5 million contract and then emerged as a Pro Bowl selection.

Deals can't be officially signed until Wednesday afternoon when the free agency signing period begins.
