Week 1: Texans vs Colts Gameday Thread

Did you here/see anything to lead you to believe there was an issue? We won, he scored two TDs & helped set the tone of the game with a critical 3rd down conversion at the beginning of the game. But since he only got 6 catches you think he might have gone full diva? Even though he was an angel on his other teams the 1st couple of years he was with his other teams.

You didn't see him cheering on the sideline. Did you see him complaining on the sideline at anytime?

Did you check out the highlights & tweets thread? A lot of post game stuff in there, some including Diggs.
Huh, where is this coming from? I never said he did anything wrong today. Another poster asked do you think he was happy with his targets today. And then another poster said that was a stupid question. I was thinking the same thing myself, will we need to be worried about him getting enough targets.

Agree we should keep it clean and respectful and personal shots like saying that is stupid question or did Diggs do something to you personally or show me where did Diggs hurt you on this doll is insulting.
if we go by history, year 1 has never been an issue. His main issue has been his QB making bad reads. I think they all saw the running game was working and CJ under pressure getting the ball out quick. Everyone played their role.

Disaster. I think maybe worried about Richardson taking off with his legs too left that big bomb potential open.

One of the big bombs was just a really nice play with Ward having his hands up between Pierce's, however the missed wide open receiver (AD I think) was a huge bust. Stingley stopped coverage thinking a safety was going to be over him...he wasn't.

Why did everyone who was asked about the field today, cover up for it? It was obvious to the announcers as well as anyone watching that players where slipping left and right today. Thank God no major injuries resulted.
Was there a cover up? I didn't hear anything other than what was said during the broadcast...

Other than that one false start, what was your issue?
He seemed to be often confused with the communication regarding the silent snap, especially from shotgun... It appeared to cause considerable frustration by Stroud. At first, I thought it was an issue with Scruggs... Throughout the game, it just seemed that Green was often confused and/or slow regarding his get off and his assignment in pass pro.... The focus of the Colts defense appeared to be primarily to attack the A gap between green and Scruggs. It also appeared they were able to read one of them to time the snap and also to read run or pass.

Unless I was having a fever dream, both Demeco and Slowick were asked during the broadcast (on or around halftime) about the turf and everyone slipping. Both basically ignored the question for the most part. I'm trying to find video now, and am coming up empty.

Ahhh. Probably because the game is over, they won, the field was the same for both teams, nobody got hurt because of it, and hopefully we don't have to play there until the next year.

It was both Steichen and Ryans who were asked above it at halftime, but head coaches would be the very last people to inquire about a slippery field, or get accused of making excuses.

Thats my assumption as well. Both teams did a lot of sliding today. One of ARs big passes happened right after one of his stumbles/slips. I believe our interception was also due to a Colt receiver slipping.
It was both Steichen and Ryans who were asked above it at halftime, and they were not covering it up. But head coaches would be the very last people to inquire about a slippery field, or get accused of making excuses.
That makes sense in hindsight.

Just in: star NFL receiver not happy with his targets after today's game. Asked why his targets were so low, he replied, " I am not the guy to ask. You need to ask the head coach".
He was not happy with his targets.

Yeah, I agree this guy has to be a diva!! This was Ja'marr Chase BTW.

Ja'Marr Chase played in the Bengals' loss to the Patriots on Sunday afternoon despite failing to agree to a new contract with the organization during the offse...
It couldn't possibly be due to his "hold in" all preseason. Practice matters.

What happened in a confusing sequence during Texans’ victory over Colts: NFL says clock runoff, start properly conveyed

Texans attempted to stop the clock with five seconds left in first half after instant replay review upheld Dalton Schultz catch. NFL official Perry Fewell said Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud was informed that there was five seconds remaining and clock would start.

INDIANAPOLIS – It was a rough, confusing and disorganized ending to the Texans’ series to close out the first half that should have resulted in a chance for kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn to knock in a field goal or have quarterback C.J. Stroud take a deep shot at the end zone.

Instead, the officials mixed up the sequence and left everyone scratching their heads about what transpired during the Texans’ 29-27 road win at Lucas Oil Stadium.

When Stroud completed a 16-yard pass to wide receiver Nico Collins down to the Colts’ 38-yard line with 18 seconds left, they called their third and final timeout. Although they initially ruled the ensuing play a seven-yard catch despite tight end Dalton chultz bobbling the football on the way to the ground, the instant replay review nullified a chance for a clock-stopping spike.

The catch was upheld. Initially, the officials messed up and had the game clock operator put 15 seconds left on the clock, more than enough time for the Texans to run a play and then send the field goal team onto the field.

Instead, referee John Hussey apologized on his microphone and said that there were just five seconds to play. Because the clock started on the official’s mark, the five seconds evaporated as Stroud lined up in the shotgun and threw an incompletion in the direction of wide receiver Tank Dell as time expired and took a 12-7 lead into halftime. A listed timeout from the Colts was not observed.

A pool report with NFL senior vice president of officiating Perry Fewell gave an explanation that the issue was with the Texans, which both coach DeMeco Ryans and Stroud accepted responsibility for.

Fewell said Stroud was told the clock was going to start.

“That was communicated to the quarterback that, ‘Hey, there are five seconds on the clock and the ball will start on the ready,’” Fewell said.

What prompted the review and the runoff of 10 seconds?

“We needed to confirm that it was a catch, number one,” Fewell said. “After that, we had to get the admin of the play correct.

And, so, from the admin standpoint, the referee was told that the clock was to be set at 15 seconds.

Why wasn’t it set at 15 seconds? What happened to the 10 missing seconds?

“That’s correct,” Fewell said. ‘So, it would only have been set to 15 seconds if we were reversing the call. We didn’t reverse the call. And, so, then we corrected the admin and the clock to five seconds.”

The Texans ultimately won the game, so there’s nothing for them to be salty about. If they hadn’t prevailed, this would likely have been a bigger deal.

“Week 1, everybody’s rusty,” Stroud said. “So, I’m rusty. We are rusty as a whole. I think the officials told us one thing, but we got another. It’s up to us to really make the situation. My job, I’ve got to be better right there. That’s something we can definitely learn from. I don’t think that it’s the end of the world, but those points could have cost us. We definitely have got to be better.”

If the Texans had known there were only five seconds left, they could have hurried the field goal team onto the field and had Fairbairn kick it as the clock expired.

“Yeah, it was just us as coaches, starting with me,” Ryans said. “Just communication on the sidelines.”

Oh I certainly dont. I am well aware what sells and what the media is doing. The guy is a diva with a big ego. He was the number one WR in Buffalo and still had issues there, sideline flameout on TV during game, walking out of locker room before coach finished talking to team, and this as a team captain. Lets see how he feels being wr2 and doesnt get the targets he is accustomed to. If he calls out Stroud on the sidelines like he did with Josh Allen, it will be a different situation, CJ wont just ignore it. Anyway I hope he proves me wrong.
This situation has been rectified. Caserio was smart to get Diggs to agree to a one year deal. He will be a model citizen this year. You're worrying about nothing.

Diggs averaged 9 TD's a season with Allen. He's already got two. Pretty sure he's happy in this offense.

Also, he is really a possession receiver, not a deep ball threat, so Tank and Nico will get most of those opportunities.

Dude's career average is 12.1 ypc, he's had almost 60% of his catches be for first downs, and in 2021 and 2022 he had the least number of 20+ yard plays and YAC of the top WRs.

Get him the ball a lot and keep moving the chains is where he will be in his sweet spot. He's on pace for 102 catches. Just needs to bring his average up.

Sorry, it's a known thing around here, when my friends Evan Williams & Jonny Walker come by I just start saying stuff that don't make sense.

You don't want to be around when Ol' Grandad stops in.

Looking at stats we had 72 plays and the Colts had 41 which should have resulted in at least another 14points. Take away ythe colts big plays and it would be a differnt final score. So we should be more productive after this less than smooth play. I see us on a sharp upward graph and the Colts will be also thus making this win very fruitful by the time of our rematch.

Correlation does not equal causation. The Texans had several long, time eating drives. The Colts had a few quick drives. Not sure how the Texans get 14 more points out of a game where they punted twice. That would have required each FG to be a TD and to have made the 2-point conversion. Or scored a TD on the two drives that ended in punts. That is basically asking for perfection.

Basically a Joe Mixon vs AR5 rematch.

Yeah we “coulda” lost to some AR5 magic but realistically… we beat the Colts with a reliable known NFL commodity… a time eating running back.

Running QBs like LJ et al are fun but after watching Watson last night… but yeah I’m taking the RB every time. Odds are stacked in his favor. Especially with Stroud at the helm.

I bolded the above and believe it 100% I don't think Diggs will be too worried about the amount of targets he receives, as long as the targets he does get are successful. He is on an offense that is loaded with WR talent and will understand that this causes two things - A) Less Targets and B) Less double coverage.

He will find success in this offense, and he will enjoy his time here.

Winning. And believing they can win it all. To me that is what he will require. If we fail multiple seasons in the post-season his attitude will shift. For now, he believes!

Tunsil was a -baller- yesterday. I don’t get the hate… especially with the false starts. I have no doubt that the first false start was -intentional- on his part. He reads defenses too, ya know?
It’s when he gets those false starts. He’s a beast but those false starts tends to happen at crucial times of the game. Yesterday he didn’t kill those critical drives like he would last season.

I can understand that. What I’m saying is I think he killed the drive -on purpose-. Basically calling an “audible” that Stroud may be missing. Namely that first false start yesterday. Nobody knows what -could- have happened but I’m betting that chances are good Tunsil saved the Texans or somebody there.

While he does make mistakes… I simply don’t believe the man is careless or reckless as y'all can make him out to be. He does his job -very very very- well.

"I think some of those -- I don't want to get into too much detail -- but yeah, there was a few that were... yeah -- you guys know, you saw 'em," Steichen said. "So, we will look at those and get those looked at for sure."
Steichen should be quiet. I mean he’s just gonna embarrass AR5 here. I mean he had no problem stiff arming and trucking guys when running downfield.
