Week 1: Texans vs Colts Gameday Thread

"I think some of those -- I don't want to get into too much detail -- but yeah, there was a few that were... yeah -- you guys know, you saw 'em," Steichen said. "So, we will look at those and get those looked at for sure."
If he takes and honest good look at those he will see his bookend tackles were obviously and blatantly HOLDING WAJr. and Hunter all game long and they weren't flagged for it ONCE....

Any minute I expect someone to break out in "Jose Cuervo is a friend of mine.."
" it's another Tequila Sunrise.."
"Tennessee whiskey... strawberry wine.."
"Red, red wine " Neal Diamond not UB40.
I will stop now.. probably should never started. That's what most drinkers say eventually.

There was one sack where I thought an overly zealous ref might throw a flag. They didn't, which I thought was correct.
The problem (with Steichen) is what rule did Edward's break? Didn't hit him in his helmet, didn't land on top of him, grabbed him around the chest, and the hip drop rules weren't broken. There is no rule for 'that looked too aggressive, wah wah wah."

Steichen will claim that AR was slammed to the ground

That's a tough rule to make. I mean 'tackling' is in essence putting someones body to the ground. Do we need to get some mathematicians in here to define the difference between tackling and slamming: "If the downed player exceeds 1.47X the acceleration of gravity resulting in a fall of 47.04 mph or more it is no longer a tackle it is a slam."

You can't hit them high, you can't hit them low, you can't land on them, you can't grab the back of their jersey (horse collar), you can't use your body weight to 'hip drop' them, and you can't exceed a certain mathematical formula when putting them to the ground... All the while fighting through multiple 300+ OLmen who are holding, pushing, pulling, and cutting you with no flags thrown.

If it's the Mario Edwards sack Colts Twitter and the fans in general are FURIOUS about it.

It's pretty entertaining. In fairness I wouldn't have been surprised if a flag was thrown but I really don't know how you expect anyone to bring down someone of that size.

Some of the responsibility has to be on Richardson. Watch the play where Buckner sacks Stroud. Stroud already begins to go down and give himself up. Part of the position is knowing when you can win and when you can't. If Stroud decided he wanted to stay on his feet and fight it it could very easily be the same type of play, but CJ knows to protect himself.

Not to mention the sheer size of Richardson himself. How else are you supposed to get him down then exactly?

Basically bear hug him and hope the refs blow the whistle? That sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I think the refs did the right thing with the no call.

We'd be upset if that was Stroud slammed like that.

I would be. But I don't think it's a penalty. That's football.

Yeah we would be but like I said I think stroud himself is smart enough to not get slammed like that. Stroud has a good idea of when he can dodge a sack and when he can't and we've seen him basically give himself up and start going down before the hit gets there plenty of times.

I watched #20- Nick Cross (S) make intentional helmet to helmet contact on at least 2 occasions.....my son and I didn't see any laundry flying after those hits. One of them, for me, was screaming targeting.

Maybe they should've sent Richardson to the locker room since they've probably become compliant and added a tampon dispenser in the team locker room.

Bolded the truth.
AR will be getting the Cam Newton treatment. They are not running backs they are QBs. If they chose not to give themselves up when a sack is inevitable, then they will be brought down forcefully. And due to their size, forcefully can sometimes look bad.

No Politics

That would require it to be in a tim walz state

One of the things that impressed me about the Colts game, is that their were a lot of 'momentum stoppers' that the team didn't let get to them. The bombs by Richardson, the halftime screw-up, the blocked punt that was essentially a free TD for the colts could have turned our win to a loss if the team lost confidence. When I look at a game like the Jaguars, when Etienne fumbled into the Dolphins endzone it was followed by an 80-yard reception to Tyreek Hill (cutting their lead to 3,) then their HC Pederson decided to go for it by running it (unsuccessfully) 4 times in a row from their own 32 (giving the Dolphins a chance to tie the game--even though they missed an easy FG), and they never scored in the second half.

We talk about the culture change that DeMeco has brought, but proving it when things go wrong is really the delivery of that message. Getting back up, dusting yourself off, and continuing to grind the game out is pretty darned impressive.

With that said I'm ready to leave the Colts game in the rearview mirror and start focusing on the Bears!

Well said cland. I think what stands out about this current roster, is their belief in the system and their trust in each other. They believe they can win any game, even with mistakes. The belief leads them to have fun while playing the game. They play loose. So when they have these "momentum stoppers", each player believes either they will correct it, or their teammates will. I have yet to see panic set in, and that is championship caliber.

No fines for hit on AR

Colts middle linebacker Zaire Franklin was fined $22,511 for a tackle, and Texans running back British Brooks was fined $4,444
Soooo… British Brooks was fined in the first quarter of his first ever NFL game. Has this ever happened before?

I don't know, but it shouldnt be hard for a millionaire to figure out how to get cash in that young mans hands, or get a rent bill paid....etc.
Oh yeah. Personally I have no doubt that McNair and/or the team would make up for the fine in one capacity or another. Just wanted to know if they have to circumvent the contract in order to do so.

No we do not want our owner figuring that out. NFL will hit them hard. We've seen what they will do on salary cap issues.
