Watson Extension

I would have preferred to see Watson improve his inconsistencies through this season, before being offered this mega deal. This didn't happen. So this is a time when Watson must finally prove his worth. It is also a time that Watson has to be evaluated on his merits alone..........as all upper echelon QBs are. Other teams and NFL evaluators will do this. Texans fans will have a difficult time of doing this. All NFL QBs share variables, including coaches and support personnel and opponents, that can effect their performance...........positively and negatively. The "elite" are paid to be consistent and overcome the swings. Watson is now being paid as an "elite" Texans franchise QB. We all all hoping that Watson is that man.
Well said. We all should be rooting for Watson, Obrien and team. They are ours.

A certain poster is too doom and gloom when it comes to Watson. That’s why he will continue to spout out negative stuff every time Watson’s name is brought up. Dude has already said in three different threads , the Texans are doomed to mediocrity for the next 3-4 years and there will be 3/4 years of excuses. But wants people to believe he doesn’t hate Watson. Mrs. McNair and staff clearly thinks Watson deserves this contract just like Mahomes deserves what he got.

Doesn't matter Brian. It's the current cost of doing business.

On a serious note, when you look at the top ten QB salaries, you could pose that question to the majority of them.
  • 1. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: $45 million
  • 2. Texans QB Deshaun Watson: $39 million
  • 2. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson: $35 million
  • 3. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger: $34 million
  • 4.Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: $33.5 million
  • 4. Rams QB Jared Goff: $33.5 million
  • 6. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins: $33 million
  • 7. Eagles QB Carson Wentz: $32 million
  • 8. Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: $$30.1 million
  • 9. Falcons QB Matt Ryan: $30 million
  • 10. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill: $29.5 million
Yes,

I do question the viability of teams operating this way. But hey, this is God" ells NFL and you most likely aren't winning a championship without a QB on his rookie contract unless you have a guy like Brady who's willing to leave some money on the table to have a better team around him. Now the Texans aren't in that position.

The extension doesn't kick in until 22 .... we know that But - see below.

His 2021 cap hit was actually reduced from $17.5m to $15.94,

The 2022 cap hit is $40.4m

That is a little over 20% (1/5th) of the current cap which isn't affected by Covid and economic shutdown issues.

Tunsil's 2022 cap hit is $21.1m

That's 10% of the current , non covid affected cap.

The projections for 2021 and 2022 are significant contractions in the cap estimates being $165m. At that figure the Texans will have 37.27% of their total cap space tied up in Watson and Tunsil. Even if the cap is ~10m or even 20m higher , that's still a significant portion of cap space allocated to just two contracts - even if they are very important (and very good) positions.
This is the reason the Texans are screwed

Good luck with this in the Covid-19/activist times we live in.

Hope you're right and wish I really cared.
Do you think covid-19 is gonna be prevalent forever? Have you sold (or tried) your PSL's yet?

I think most importantly people's viewing habits have changed. See,: The NBA

I'm keeping my PSL's but have sold my tickets. I'm not boycotting the NFL but they're no longer a priority. I will watch the Texans but not other games as much.

My golf game is improving though

Go Texans 1-1...Post OB!!!!!
Someone remind me as to the last time Watson was gifted a "complete" team like the ones gifted to Mahomes, Wilson, Rothlisberger, Rodgers, Goff, and Ryan when they won their Super Bowls.

When those teams were not blessed with their assts, how many of the QB's listed got their broken down or badly assembled teams to the Super Bowl?

It's OB's job to prove he can now do the same as the other great GM/HC tandems. Watson has shown his warts and he's also shown the ability to be really special.....he just needs a "complete" team like the other great QB's we’re blessed with in their big seasons.

20 yrs is a small sample size?

I started a thread asking posters what they think the cap will look like in 2023 and would love to see your response so in 2023 we can go back and revisit this topic.

Just because fans are happy DW4 got paid doesn't mean it was the right thing to do. Time will tell.
I think 20 years is long enough if it shows you that 14 Super Bowls were won by QBs on their rookie contract.
It isn’t the size of the contract that gets signed, it’s the advantage that not paying your franchise QB the going rate gives you.

Of course that means having things like an Oline sorted before you draft your QB, if only OB had had several years to get that done before drafting Watson.

Mine is there will be no SB's with the cap percentages. History has proven this out and you can deny this all you want too. But it is what it is.
History has proven no QB has won a SB taking up that much cap space.

Doesn’t mean we can’t get there & lose four years in a row. That would be an upgrade from where we are now.

The Chiefs weren't a complete team last yr. They did have a better QB that will his team to win against big odds while the other QB wilted. Did you see the difference in leadership in that game between Mahomes and DW4? The contrast was stark.

This is what I was saying before Watson was drafted. Even though when it became obvious at the time they were going to draft a QB. This is when I was for doing whatever it took to get Mahomes.

BTW, RS is the guy who went ahead and drafted DW4 which will almost guarantee that there wont be any championships in the 8 to 10 yr period DW4 is the Texans QB. This isn't DW4's fault, this is just another in a long line of the Texans orgs failures. I look at this like this was RS last incompetent parting shot and it rightfully cost him his job. Yeah I know his wife blah blah blah....

Exactly. This right here is not hard to understand at all. But when you have a specific agenda , then you’re not trying to hear all of this. Thus, the reason why we’re using the excuse statements in every thread. Like you stated there’s so many valuables to factor in all of this. Quite of few things has to go right, while a sprinkling in some Lady Luck.

Mahomes was firing his guys up when everything was going wrong and the Chiefs were down 24-0. What did DW4 do after the Carter fumble to fire his squad up?

I would expect an answer like this from you because if you couldn't see the difference then you were/are blinded by fandom. It was there on full display for everybody to see the difference.

If you're not happy with this extension, then BOB is the one to flame. It's quite obvious that BOB loves DW4.

I am not picking on you, so please don't take it that way. I just like verifying things said on this message board is all. I don't see where it was mentioned that you would do what ever it takes to get Pat Mahomes. In your mock draft threads, he is only mentioned once with you wanting to take him in the 2nd round. Your final mock has you selecting Josh Dobbs.

4. Josh Dobbs- QB, Tennessee- If he had to play next yr he could due to work ethic. Leader who makes plays, nees to improve accuracy. Poor mans Dak.

Rd.3 Chad Kelly- Most talented/NFL ready QB in this draft, Great Genes, beat Alabama/LSU in same season. He has a temper and an edge, I like my QB's with this edge, the great ones have it. Not a druggie/wife beater.

2. Pat Mahomes Tx Tech, QB, 6'2 229, Mahomes reminds me of a less polished Wilson. Alex Smith with a better arm. Great athlete with a huge arm and great accuracy. Needs to work on footwork but could get away with it in college. The main reason he falls is hehas never taken a snap under center, or called a play. Much less called it from a huddle. Mahomes is more talented than Goff and being from a family where his did was a professional pitcher the pressure of the NFL wont be too much for him.

When BOB gets fired look no further than this extension as the cause. This extension was more likely a McNair move than a BOB move. The McNair's are all about PR over substance. Nothing in the Texans org has really changed since the picking of Carr. Style over Substance.

You might want to read some of Corrosion and my discussion on this subject at the time.

Tell me when Goff/Ryan have won SB's? Notice how all of these guys but Big Ben were on their rookie contracts and only won 1 SB and that was before they got paid the big bucks. Don't you see a trend?

If you go back and look at the member mock draft of 2017, I believe @steelbtexan voted for Mahomes for the Texans pick in the mock draft. I think Watson received one more vote for Mahomes.

If you think the Chiefs were/are a complete team then we cant have a discussion. The Chiefs do have a better HC and a generational QB with speed everywhere on offense. Their defense is/was avg at best.

So your argument is......the Chiefs and the Texans were equal on all facets except QB. Therefore Watson was the sole reason the Texans didn't win that game?

Nope as I've said many times it was a total organizational failure. But DW4 isn't in the same stratosphere as Mahomes either talentwise or as a leader.

Exactly. Also, how many people were expecting the Chiefs to move up to take Mahomes? Shoot, what about the Texans moving up for Watson?
Another case of the previous GM's ineptness. He left us with atleast another 8 yrs of failure as a parting gift.

If Mahomes is the ultimate leader at QB....why didn't the Red Raiders enjoy the ultimate success in CFB?

Watson has been a winner at every stop in his football career prior to arriving in Houston.

Mahomes got what Watson had in the lower levels and Watson was strappped with the same crap Mahomes was before arriving in Kansas City.

OptimisticTexan

The French? The offensive line? Or maybe coaching...
No....no....no.....excuses cannot be made or are they allowed for failing to lead their team to championships. Why couldn't Mahomes get the Red Raiders over the hump? Could it have been a team talent issue? Maybe it was the coaching? Possibly a scheme issue was at fault? The good thing, all was corrected at the NFL level. The bad thing, Watson hasn't had the same level of coaching or surrounding talent at the NFL level. Maybe he'll get that this season.....it looks good on paper but does it roll-over to the field?
