Vince Wilfork to Houston - **signed**

He played 802 defensive snaps last year... don't know why you think he can only play 320 for us
Exactly right. He's still a three-down player. He's 33 but still one of the strongest players in the NFL. He's very agile and athletic for his mammoth size as well. He's a freak of nature basically. I expect him to play close to another 800 defensive snaps in 2015. Romeo Crennel will utilize all of his talents and exploit the matchups. J.J. Watt is the happiest man right now. He's been having a great time all day.

gonna be lots and lots of 3 and outs... don't know that our defense will be on the field for 800 snaps...

If Nix decides to actually play meaningfully this year, we could have an awesome defense. If Nix AND Clowney both actually do something for a change, it will be glorious.

You may be right. Especially if our running game on offense is as good as I think it will be in 2015. The Texans will be able to dominate the time of possession practically every game.

yep, we're gonna draft a RB. I'm hoping for David Johnson. Would be huge addition in the passing game also

There are a lot of people happy about signing Wilfork. I wonder if any of them are the same ones knocking the Colts for signing old players???

I definitely knocked the Colts for getting old at skill positions where speed and timing matter.

We will be younger since Wilfork will replace Pickett at NT. A position where players are in their prime in the mid 30's and who have a very focused role.

We got younger and better today on defense.

Texans are getting a class act of a person and football player. Vince gives his all on the field and for someone of his size is very athletic. He has great hands. 3 INTS to his name.

From the day he was drafted Wilfork has been a professional on and off the field. He helped raise his brothers and sisters through college, so he was mature well beyond his years. Vince has never been in any trouble whatsoever. Married 11 years to his wife Bianca who is like his manager in some respects. It would not surprise me if she had just as much of a vote to choose Houston as Vince.

They are both very funny. https://twitter.com/mrs75 On MNF introductions, Vince said he went to school at Burger King.

I hate to see Vince go, but the NFL is a cruel business.

“Me and my family, we’re excited to be here in Houston and playing as a Houston Texan,” Wilfork said in a press release Monday. “My goal is to help this team win as many games as possible and bring winning to this town. I think we deserve that, so that’s my number one goal.”

“I look at it as a great fit,” said Wilfork. “Being here with a coach that coached me as a rookie in RAC (Romeo Crennel) and a coach that played with me in (Mike) Vrabel. Also, Billy O (Bill O’Brien) being there for a couple years with me and (George) Godsey.”

“Being able to have a chance to play with a dynamic player such as J.J. Watt,” Wilfork said. “Also, getting Clowney going and Cushing and Johnathan Joseph, all those guys, and the offense and what they bring to the table. It’s a young, exciting team to be around.”

"I’ve heard the fans are some great fans, so I can’t wait to be a part of that," @wilfork75 on #Texans fans.

"I’m not a coach by no means, but at the same time, I’ve been on another level where I’ve won a lot of games & won Super Bowls." VW #Texans

"I wish there was no salary cap and you can always keep every player you want, but that’s not the way the game is anymore" Wilfork. #Texans

Wilfork on leaving the Patriots "I’ve been very blessed and privileged to play up there & learn from the best coach that's ever done it."

"My goal is to help this team win as many games as possible and bring winning to this town. I think we deserve that," @wilfork75. #Texans

Thanks for the endorsement! Great to add another true pro to our DL. VW will help both JJ and our ILBs, which in turn makes us much better. I've got to believe that he'll also be a GREAT influence on Nix. Perfect signing good job team.

I give this one a very cautious thumbs up. Not injured AND playing to his potential, he could be very good for us.

This is where I'm at, as well. But, I'm standing down my skeptic side and just enjoying the moment, and glad that the Texans are active in FA but making smart moves.

VW could be part of a historic monster D-line. The kind that NFL Films puts on lists in the future if they live up to their potential. I'm hoping Andy Luck and the rest of the QBs we face this year are a little nervous right now. Facing J.J. is already something to keep them up at night, but then adding Wilfork next to him is the stuff of nightmares.

So in your opinion, was the Pats not keeping Vince an issue of $$$ and cap space? Or do you feel that Belichick just thought it was time to move on from Wilfork?

Most especially so if we can get Clowney and Nix to show up for work.

Am I the only one that feels bad for the big man come training camp? 100 degree weather! He's used to that mild weather up north. They need to keep him in the bubble on kirby.

Color me shocked , I sure thought we were getting "Orlando Pace'd" ....

I liked Wilfork in the draft and have thought he'd be a good fit for this team ever since they went back to the 3-4 front.

Wilfork next to Watt .... is a damn fine start to a defense. If Clowney can live up to the hype & Mercilus can improve a bit on last year .... and get something from the ILB spots , the front 7 could be dangerous and I already like the secondary.

Less complaining from me about the defense now .... still a lot of questions on the offensive side tho the Short's signing helps there.

typical coach speak?
Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick issued the following statement on Vince Wilfork.
"Few players reached or will ever reach the special level of Vince Wilfork. He is a great champion and one of the classiest people I have ever been around – just a kind, genuine and giving person who was all about our team, football, winning and bringing joy to others. There may have never been anyone at his position with as much strength, toughness, intelligence, instinctiveness and athleticism. He is the best defensive linemen I ever coached, an all-time great Patriot whose place on our team will be missed but whose remarkable career as a Patriot will be remembered forever."

Great pickup. Big men last forever in the NFL, so age isn't a big deal. Should be a mentor to Nix, who certainly has potential.

Funny you should mention that because I remember a prominent poster in these parts back in 2004 who argued that the rotund Wilfork coming out of college would be a bad choice because "fat men" like him don't remain in the league very long, they have a shorter career than better conditioned athletes. Well I dunno'bout Wilforks general conditioning, but he's for sure a fat guy and she's till at it and still getting paid to do it.

Granted it's been a few years, but he did grow up and play college ball in Florida, so he should at least have some idea of what he's getting into.

Very happy to admit I was wrong.

Watt/Wilfork, Drafted LB/Moore added to last yrs defense = top 8. If Clowney can be 80/90% of his talent level and Nix is healthy and playing at his talent level this is a top 3 dominant defense.

Am I the only one who doesnt see Graham getting cut? I feel like I have read that a lot on this forum. He really isnt that expensive.

Roughly 20th in contract value for 2015. Seems reasonable for a player who has his ability.

If you could sign Wisniewski or Brandon Spikes using Graham's $$$$ would you cut Graham?

I would in a heartbeat.

The danger with big guys is them eating themselves out of the NFL, which happens on occasion.

Strength stays with a man a lot longer than agility or speed when he ages. A guy close to forty can still be huge and powerful

Wilfork is from Boynton Beach FLA. Im 99% sure he still has a ranch in FLA where he works out in the summer.

Depends upon the offensive scheme .... if its what we saw last year where the TE's combined for 32 catches .... may as well. If its the offense from the year before , nope I keep him. Only a handful of TE's post better numbers than he did in 2013 and those are getting paid big $.

I'm curious about what O'Brien is like in these meetings with potential players. He seems to be able to get people to just want to blindly follow him and play for him.

Granted, we didn't sign Hartline, but, still, these deals just seem team-friendly, and I suspect the "sell" job by O'Brien is playing a lot into that.

I'm liking the DL in the three four and the situational four three as well:

3-4

JJ Watt
V. Wilfork
J Crick

4-3

JJ Watt
V. Wilfork
L Nix
J Crick

5-2

JJ Watt
V. Wilfork
L Nix
J Pagan
J Crick

Wilfork played more DE than NT last yr. I could see a Watt/Nix/Wilfork DL if Nix grows up. I could even see the Texans drafting a NT like Xavier/Terry Williams in the 5-6th rd to ensure Wilfork plays a lot of DE/5 tech.

Good thing is RAC is like a mad scientist and I can assure you that this DL will be one of, if not the best in the NFL.

I have no doubt that Vince and his wife Bianca will be fan favorites in a short time. They are down to earth regular people.

They both like to go fishing.

No, I'm sure it's genuine. Wilfork deserves the praise. It just doesn't answer my question, "Why did the Pats let Wilfork go?"

I'm thinking they were over confidant in their ability to resign him to have a lower cap #

Too close to Miami to get acclimated to Houston type weather. Orlando and North would have been comparable. Miami temperatures moderate a bit from the sea breeze.

Hopefully Watt, Wilfork, Clowney, and Cushing can all stay hea----hahah, who am I kidding? We're not nearly lucky enough for such a thing to happen.

Hopefully it works out well.

You can't keep everybody every year. They have five players over $7M/yr and ten players over $4M/yr. I read in the play breakdown that Wilfork played away from the NT position more last year than usual, so maybe that had something to do with it if they think they have better (cheaper) options at DT (Dominick Easely?) OR perhaps they are considering more 4/3 alignments and wouldn't need the NT as much.

Lot's of possibilities, but only Beliarcheat knows for sure.

I don't know of it was just a slow or off day for me today or what, but signing Wilfork totally made my day today.

Like I said, about 5 degree cooler and even more dramatic when you compare days over 95 in Houston versus Miami. A little less if you use 100 because of the number of days Houston reaches between 95 and 99 (ie Typical summer day in Houston).

But if the point is that it's not like up North, then I agree.
