I didn't do a ton of OL study this offseason, except for on the big name tackles and a few of the centers. I don't know anything about Dahl other than the little I have read.
Is this a pick for a potential starting center or is this pick for a versatile guy that may end up anywhere?
He is not a center. Probably not a tackle. Best position should be LG. Not a lot of length or core strength more of a technician who brings lunch pail work ethic & toughness.

Depends on who you talk to. I think TexansFTW and Texian liked him because of his versatility and possibility to play C.

Blythe played for probably the best OL coaching mind in college football. If I was a ZBS team then Blythe is a no brainer. However the Texans are more of a power run O. I do like Dahl's versatility and I am not convinced that Dahl cannot play OT. Dahl has many similarities to Duane Brown and is better prepared in pass pro than Brown was as a rookie. Also I think there is a good chance a OC will be available later. IMHO I think Lance is spread to thin with all his media success. Even before Lance was only so so in his evaluations. Lance's greatest contributions came as SEC Guy on twitter and radio interviews, now that's funny!Depends on who you talk to. Because we had such great success moving the versatile Sua-Filo around to different positions.I don't get it. Why get a guy who might be able to play C instead of a C? Oh well.

10. Joe Dahl, Washington State
Joe Dahl remains one of PFF’s highest graded offensive linemen, despite missing two games due to injury. So far this season, he has graded out positively in all but one of the games he’s played. Though reliable in the run game (+5.0), Dahl has performed especially well when in pass protection. Asked to drop back and protect his quarterback a staggering 505 times this year, Dahl has excelled, leading the nation with a pass blocking grade of +15.7.
Joe Dahl, Washington State
One of the most experienced pass protectors in the country over the last two seasons, Dahl is also one of the most efficient. The left tackle had 1,382 pass blocking snaps over the past two seasons (Ronnie Stanley didn’t miss a game and took 871 for comparison) and finished in the top 25 for pass blocking efficiency nationwide both years (13th in 2015). Dahl is undersized though with strength concerns to boot. Some see him as a guard at the next level, but his power issues were only exacerbated while playing there at the Senior Bowl. Dahl’s change of direction ability is top notch and has enough tools to be a competent pass protector in the NFL.
"He could play multiple positions at the next level, including center, but I think guard is his best position." To that point, Dahl played both left and right guards in college. The NFL analyst concluded that "ome team will draft him in the second round; others will wish they had."

There was discussion about shifting to 2 hours to try to get through this a little faster.

Fair enough. If it's still 4 then I'll have some time later today.
But Joe Dahl can be a serviceable backup Center, fight to remove Bust Sua-Filo from the team, and MAYBE fight to get Derek Newton's contract cut.
We weren't drafting a starter for the Center position, so For me personally, I'd want a guy that can fight and challenge at all 3 spots.
bust Sua-Filo? It's not his fault that he was moved all over the place trying to learn the nfl and all positions on the Ol his first year. That's on the coaches. And injuries happen. I think he's gonna be a good LG now that he has only one job
I have a high respect for PFF, this is what they do, they get up everyday and watch game videos and they grade them like a coach and they evaluate them like a scout. You get snap counts, run vs pass, grades, no where else can you get this info. Every NFL Team subscribes to their services and they get much more detail and analysis than the individual subscriber and the individual subscriber gets enormous detail. If you want to know the intricacies of the positions on the O line, Alex Gibbs has about 12 hours of teaching videos on youtube. Gibbs goes in to great detail about first step, hand positions, helmet placements for maximum leverage and control, backside blocks, timing as it relates to the 3, 5, 7 step drop, QB handing ball to RB in his 3rd step. You'll never watch a game again in the same way after watching all the Gibbs teaching videos.I'm not going to lie. I can watch a center, guard, or tackle all day. I'm not a dummy. I obviously know you want to clear lanes and not let your QB get hit. Other than that, I know nothing. I'm an adrenaline guy, I like to follow the ball around the field and follow who is hitting the guy with the ball. I read NFL draft profile, Walter, CBS, Bah007, and Wolverine Fan talk about their arm movements and stuff like that.
On top of those 5, and no offense to those 5, I often read Pro Football Focus. They are the only guys (that I've found) that give metrics to and frequently rate and review OLineman. So when those guys hype up a guy, I tend to follow suit. Here's a few things they said about that guy.

I'm calling it. At this pace we won't make it to the 6th round.
Minnesota gets:
K.J. Dillon - S, West Virginia
@Mollywhopper is on the clock for Cincinnati followed by @austins23 for Pittsburgh.
Sorry caught up in meetings. That's a perfect pick and safety was a top priority.
What about Cole Toner from Harvard? Can play OT or OG. Packers love those guys who can play multiple positions.
