Texans Training Camp 2015

The practice field is likely to be far worse than any field we'll actually play on, so it's not really that great of a concern if they have trouble on it. Even if they do, there are always ~designated snowplows~ available... They might even let you deflate on demand.

The Redskins are a better team than people give them credit for. The Texans are performing quite well in these joint practices. J.J. Watt is beasting as usual. Now let's see what happens when we start the preseason schedule next Saturday Night against the 49ers on August 15. And can any of this training camp success carry over into the season?

24 observations from day two of Texans vs. Redskins
John Harris|Texans Analyst

Another day is in the books from the Bon Secours (the r is silent, just so you know) Training Facility here in Richmond, VA... A slight drizzle highlighted the day, but it could’ve been worse...like Thursday night when a gullywasher hit us on the way home from dinner.

1. A number of Texans sat out practice as they rehabbed injuries or got the day off. As such, a number of threes and twos moved up the ladder a rung to the twos or the ones. It disrupted the rhythm of things throughout the day as Jonathan Grimes mentioned after practice. As always there were some good moments, but the Redskins returned the end of practice favor to the Texans, seemingly winning the last couple of drills.

2. One of the great aspects of a shared practice is the fact that players get the opportunity to reunite with former college teammates, coaches and/or acquaintances. As practice was just about to start, nearly everyone was out on the two practice fields, but the last Redskin out of the locker room jogged out of the facility. It was Akeem Davis, a former Memphis Tiger. As he ran past, he made a beeline for Lonnie Ballentine, his former secondary mate with Memphis. The two exchanged a quick bro hug before Davis continued on to the practice field. That was one of the cool moments of the day to me for some reason.

3. It was Ryan Mallett’s day with the ones and there were definite start and stop moments with that first crew. One of Mallett’s first throws during team was a laser across the middle to DeAndre Hopkins but he couldn’t make the catch. It was a ball Hop catches nine and half times out of ten. Washington’s defensive backs may have gotten a hand in on the ball but it’s still a catch he should, and typically does, make. Mallett did hook up with Cecil Shorts III again, but missed the mark to Nate Washington a couple of times during the day. Washington did make a catch during the ones’ Move the Chains team drill, one of the only catches during that period. As I said, it was an up and down day.

4. The story for the Texans today was Brian Hoyer leading the second offense during the day. Since minicamp and OTAs when one of the two quarterbacks took snaps with the second group, it was a struggle at times. But, today, Hoyer lifted the two unit throughout the day. During the team’s first team period versus Washington’s nickel scheme, he threw a dart to Keith Mumphery for a first down. He then lofted one to Jonathan Grimes for another long gain.

5. Later during an 11-on-11 Move the Chains drill, Hoyer threw a bomb down the field and couldn’t have thrown it any better. I mean he dropped a dime right into the hands of EZ Nwachukwu. Unfortunately, EZ couldn’t squeeze it and make the catch. But, the positive was the deep ball accuracy of Hoyer. That ball was just brilliantly thrown down the field. Other than the goal line fade, Hoyer threw to DeAndre Hopkins on Thursday here in Richmond, that deep ball was perhaps the best throw I’ve seen him make. Trust me, that ball should’ve been caught.

6. During the team’s goal line session, the first offense struggled a bit and Hoyer needed to get the twos in the end zone to get some momentum to end practice. On the team’s second play from inside the ten, Hoyer stood in the pocket and found Jaelen Strong in the end zone. He lasered one to Strong, hitting him between the one and the one for a much needed end to the goal line drill.

7. While Mallett and Hoyer faced the Redskins’ nickel unit, the Texans nickel unit took ...

I was hoping we'd see something like this this year. You know I'm not a big Brian Hoyer fan, but having both him & Mallet should get the whole team up to speed faster, & not just one group. Actually, during camp last year, none of the QBs were of any help since they were all learning the system themselves

23. RGIII threw a gorgeous fade route to Pierre Garcon for a touchdown on the Redskins’ goal line offensive reps. But, had it been a game situation, he wouldn’t have even got rid of the ball. I focused that rep on JJ Watt who was matched up with former Iowa Hawkeye rookie guard Brandon Scherff. Watt beat Scherff on that rep so badly, that the rookie didn’t even get out of his stance before Watt shot past him. 99 was so brutally quick off the ball and didn’t give the rookie a chance. Watt then ran past RGIII as the former Heisman Trophy winner launched his beautiful pass for the TD.

Glad I read this, if I had just gone by the Skins reporter I would have believed Sherff was routinely putting Watt on his butt

I'm listening to 610 radio here in Houston and right now John (Hollywood) McClain is reporting from TC in Ricmond, Va and he's saying that
X. Su’a-Filo is still running second team behind undrafted Titans failure Jeff Adams who we picked up from the Titans last year when he was released by them. And as Mcclain says this guy is a major disappointment. All I can say is wow !

Things don't look good now, but wait a bit before you make up your mind on XSF. He might be half a second off of where the Texans want him to be, or 6 ounces. All we know is he isn't where the Texans want him...

How does he look with the second team? Is he holding his own, dominating, or getting schooled? I haven't heard anything one way or the other so I doubt it's an "ability to play" issue. If he's not in the starting line up by the third preseason game, then I'll worry.

For a young guy like X There's phases.

How you looked at the end of the year.
How hard you work in the off season.
How the hard work has benefited you to start camp.
How you look at the beginning of padded practice.
How you look in scrimmages/pre-season games.

I haven't see how X has looked for myself, but I'm concerned that there's only one phase left and he hasn't gotten more 1st team reps (if any). Has the guy ahead of him been that impressive or has X just been that unimpressive?

He's going to need an extraordinary pre-season, an injury or a solid pre-season and for whatshisface to not be all that.

He can get the job during the season. That's likely going to require whatshisface to not be good.

Given that O'Brien has said that he's mixing and matching O-line guys in TC, I wouldn't read a lot into where anyone is playing until the preseason games start when (I hope) O'Brien should be done 'tinkering'.

X hasn't played with the starters apparently. No one else is being mixed and matched. Both OB and smith have commented specifically about X needing to get better. Pre season starts in a week.

If X starts that first pre season game it'll be because he's been elevated from 2nd team because that's where he is right now.

One still frame of a bunch of top shelf athletes moving at or near top speed doesn't tell what may have happend in the one-half to two or three seconds leading up to it being snapped. Hoyer could have evaded a rush and just been getting himself back to some kind of launch point, the depth perception could be tricky in the photo, the lineman in front of him could actually be much closer and have been right in a path he was headed. Who knows?

I can't stand the idea of Hoyer being our qb, and so I couldn't give a rip to defend him personally, but a photo like that can be a tricky read is all.

Hey man, X is being outplayed by an undrafted FA who is playing out of his usual position (he's a tackle, not a guard), after we got him from the Titans who cut him.
I have to give it to you, you've got the patience of Job and your optimism is unfailing. I'm worried, the guy is looking more and more like a bust.
*******
You know who Danny Watkins is ? This guy is starting to sound like Watkins who was a guard drafted in the first round by the Eagles a couple years ago and released after just 2 seasons in the NFL.

The Philadelphia Eagles have run out of patience with guard Danny Watkins.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that Watkins -- a first-round draft pick in 2011 -- is being released, per a source informed of the transaction. The Eagles later confirmed Watkins' release.

I do think guys can get better but I'm far from not recognizing what the situation is at this time. I've been taking notice of this since day one when it was reported he was running with the second team. I read the OB quotes that he was mixing and matching, but that didn't make a lot of sense to me. If a coach puts you in as a starter on day one of camp it's because he thinks you're ahead of the guy behind you.

This particular situation intrigues me because of how awful X looked at times last year in pass pro. His feet looked horrid. If that's not something he can correct he's absolutely useless.

But that would be something that shows up with pads. I'm concerned that the coaches didn't think he was ready before pads came on and now apparently they still don't think he's ready.

I hope whatshisface is really actually a decent player.

I'm antsy to see these guys play in a game. The whole team really.

Su'a-Filo was one of my favorite picks from that draft. If he busts, I'm going to be very sad.
Why was he a fav pick of yours at the time he was drafted ? All I can remember is being so surprised we'd use such a high Draft pick on an interior lineman ? You know last years Draft was considered a very good Draft, very deep, and the 1st of the second round, 33rd overall was virtually a late first round pick. A big thing was the opportunity cost of the pick because for example there was still several very good QB prospects on the Board when they took the X-man at 33.
I dunno, the 2014 Draft in general so far has been such a big disappointment and this is guy is maybe the biggest reason. Maybe it will turn around with some good news soon
about some of these young prospects from last years Draft ?

I didn't like any of the top QB prospects last year. Even if TB had been there at 33, I didn't want him. Not at 33. I didn't want any of those QBs before the third round.

I generally believe in building teams from the inside out, not from the outside in. I didn't particularly like Ben Jones at LG, and thought we needed to upgrade that position. I liked the X pick because I felt like we got an extra first rounder. I felt like X was easily a first round talent, and in my mocks, he wasn't even there at 33. I liked the X pick, because I felt it signaled a continuation of the shift to a bigger, more athletic interior of our line, continuing on with the Brooks pick. I liked the X pick, because I felt like it sent the message that we were going to be a team that was going to line up and beat you at the line.

I was surprised that we took him, but I liked the message.

Excellent explanation. And I do agree with your philosophy which I think put another way is that the game is won/lost at the los so prioritize linemen on both defense and offense
when it comes to the Draft. Absolutely use 1st and second round picks on OTs, but better get it right if such a high pick is on a G/C. Now I've been reluctant to jump on Rick Smith while others happily blast him, but if this guy busts well then it's on Rick more than anybody IMO.

You're right, one still frame does not always tell the story. But I've watched Hoyer enough to have seen this same familiar mechanical breakdown repeated whenever he "perceives" pressure..........even when it's entirely phantom.

.

We don't know that he's being out played. Like I said earlier, there haven't been any reports that Adams is dominating or that X is being manhandled. It's a reasonable assumption to make, but it could be other things. Maybe OB wants him a fee pounds lighter, maybe OB wants him to do 2 more push ups. Maybe XSF refuses to take a shower, maybe he's making on Devlin's daughter.

At the very least, before we go with the bust label, I'm suggesting we wait until we get our eyes on them in action. If you've gone to camp & you've seen this with your own eyes, please share. Otherwise, we'll have to wait for Hard Knocks, or the first preseason game.

For all we know, they sacrificed XSF for a Hard Knocks feel good story.

This XSF stuff may be injury related. I got that inference earlier from someone but can't remember where now. He battled back issues all last year.

Steady rain today, full pads, field is pretty mucked up.

ESPN SPORTSCENTER is live at practice if you want to watch excerpts.

Zierlein reports practice has been on NFL Network, too.

Akeem Dent, Louis Nix, Mike Mohamed, Lonny Ballentine, Jeoffrey Pagan not practicing today. Fiedorowicz sidelined.

RB Chris Polk is back from his hamstring injury and practicing today.

The field looks ugly out there. I hope nobody gets hurt. They should cancel this practice. Almost time to come back home and prepare for the 49ers preseason game next Saturday Night. NRG Stadium baby! Hard Knocks crew for HBO is out there getting some footage. It premiers this week.

Fights galore at camp today, both fields at same time. #HardKnocks getting lots of footage.

Teams on separate fields now. At least four fights, with two simultaneous on two fields and players running back and forth between. Football!

First, not everyone was enamored by the QBs of tat draft. OB said h didn't see much difference between six of them, why would he take a QB with a late first, when he thought there were four guys left as talented as the two already taken?

As far as being excited about X, he was the second rated guard in the draft. Just like Bridgewater "shouldn't" have been there at 33, Suafilo shouldn't have been there either.

I was surprised that we took him, but I liked the message.

XSF was brought in as a replacement for Wade Smith. Ben Jones was second team at the time.

I view the Ben Jones narrative differently than most. He was drafted in the fourth as an eventual replacement for Chris Myers & depth at both the center & guard position. However, he impressed the coaches so much when opportunity presented itself, he was promoted to a starting position over the man drafted ahead of him for the RG position. They eventually replaced him with the guy they drafted for the position. He sat on the bench the entire next season, even though our LG struggled all year long. We draft X to fill the void at LG. But because he has to fulfill his college obligations Ben Jones Is given the opportunity to impress his new coaches. He does, & starts the entire next season.

He's not the guy we wanted, but it's pretty obvious the kid can play.

Good explanation and good reasoning as to why we should be, guardedly, optimistic about the move to OC. We just need to give him the playing time to settle into his natural position and then we may have our center for the next 5 years or so.

Fight has been over for about 5 mins but there's a noticeable buzz in the air here.

I now have a good feeling what episode two of #HardKnocks is likely to focus on...

Junior Galette prowling the sidelines like a lion. He is amped. He clearly wanted to have his team mates backs during that but was held back

Rookie RB Matt Jones may have dinner his sore knee in that melee. Leaving the field with a trainer. #Redskins

Coaches have completely separated the teams. Practice may be over. Stay tuned.

The #Redskins fans clearly awarding the fight to Washington on on points. RGIII working the crowd. Getting them hyped.

This rain makes tweeting basically impossible I'm sorry. But this was a huge and intense fight. Many many punches swung.

Huge fight. Raindrops make it tough to type. Almost entire rosters, both teams. Everyone involved. Coaches furious. Wasted session it seems.

First snap 11 on 11s, #Redskins D v #Texans O. Skins force the fumble from A Blue, Ihenacho recovers.

ESPN's Sportscenter is live from Redskins training NOW

On the opposite end of the field, RGIII and the WRs doing one on ones. This side is McCoy and TEs/HBs.

Okay here we go. Some one on one drills between #Texans and #Redskins .
Darrel Young and Alfred Morris both with good catches early.

The CSN tent shelter crew (official name) are talking about the reported "zero percent chance of rain today".

Tress Way just averaged 4.62 seconds of hang time on 8 punts (per the official Walker Stop Watch). Not bad in the pouring rain.

Coach Callahan working his OL on the auxiliary field with a piece of equipment that forces his OL to stay low out of the snap.

Once the players start actually practicing, we will head out.

Typical that on the biggest crowd day, it pours.

Ok, while the players are stretching myself @michaelpRTD, @TarikCSN @Rich_TandlerCSN @bmcnally14 and @sarah_k_spence sheltering in CSN tent.

Trent Williams also not in pads. A bunch of players the crowd was hoping to see will be watching from the sidelines.

Ryan Kerrigan also not in pads today. Veteran day off.

Okay, I've moved from sideline to auxiliary field. Side bonus: shelter.
The rain us really coming down here

Ah, that's why: Coach Callahan is working with h the OL and QBs on the auxiliary field to warm up.

Preston Smith, who is listed as day to day, is also not in pads today.

Like everyday, a bit of special teams warming up first. Punts are noticeably a bit less clean with this rain. Heavy balls, swirly wind.

I'm her, on the sideline, in the rain. Last day of camp for me, so a bit of water isn't going to stop me covering this.

Coach Callahan is preparing a lot of equipment on the auxiliary field.
Expect him to work his troops hard today.

Bit of rain falling here at Camp today.

Stephen Paea in pads after tweaking his groin yesterday.

Preston Smith also not in pads. He's got a groin strain.

Kerrigan, Trent Williams, Golston not in pads.

Biggest fan turnout, but raining pretty hard.

#Redskins made some position tweaks on the roster. Scherff now listed as G/T, LeRibeus as C/G, Tyler Larsen as C/G, Quinton Dunbar as WR/CB

#Texans rookie RB Kenny Hilliard started the physical part of one of the . Lowered his shoulder and ran a #Redskins player over.

Four fights just now, punches thrown, on both fields. Teams end drills against each other are done for now looks like. #Texans

Important for the #Texans to have Chris Polk back today. The RB is part of the team's post-Foster plan.

Pouring rain here. Clowney still running in it on a side field. #Texans

JJ Watt and Vince Wilfork have a laugh before practice, then start playing catch. #Texans

Will have a piece later today about Duane Brown's roots. He took me back to his childhood home, now just an empty lot. #Texans

SportsCenter is here in Richmond. I'll be on a few times today to talk #Texans

Just trying to get better everyday and be the best teammate I can possibly be

“Me being a veteran, I was just trying to get things de-escalated,” Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph said. “After three days of practice, things can get heated like that. I’m not really glad because we came here to get some good work in. We weren’t able to do that.

“I get we just had enough of going back and forth, and it just escalated. Sometimes guys just get tired of practicing. It was nothing personal. We played hard to the whistle. I don’t think it was anything extra. Guys just playing hard and competing.”

Among the fights was an altercation between Texans rookie cornerback Kevin Johnson and Redskins wide receivers Andre Roberts and Pierre Garcon.

Roberts and Johnson got in each other’s face and blows were exchanged after Roberts took exception to Johnson hitting fullback Jordan Campbell.
...
There was also a fight between Redskins linebacker Adam Hayward and Texans offensive tackle Aaron Adams.

“It got heated,” Texans outside linebacker John Simon said.
...
Texans cornerback Kareem Jackson wasn’t surprised by the outbreak of violence, saying tension had been building.

“It’s football, things like that are going to happen,” Jackson said. “It’s very fortunate that nobody got hurt. As men, we all have that competitive nature in us. Sometimes, it gets a little chippy.

“Sometimes, that stuff happens. You have two different teams competing. It’s that way sometimes. We’re all competitors. Anytime we come out here on the field, I don’t think anybody wants to be shoved around.”
