Texans random thought of the day

While I do agree lack of practices along with fewer and fewer snaps in preseason games is having an affect on poor tackling, other teams seem to have less of an issue with it than the Texans, who are among the league leaders in misses nearly every year for a while now. According to PFR the team with the fewest missed tackles this season is averaging 3.4 per game. The team with the most missed tackles, which the Texans are tied for, average 7.5 misses per game.

I’m not sure what conclusions can be drawn from it though. Here’s a list of the missed tackle stats from PFR with highlighted teams being teams currently holding playoff spots.

7 in the top 16, 7 in the bottom 16.
4 recent head coaches and none of them could fix it or thought it was significant? I just do not get it.

I really liked what the Jags did last week in this situation. They lined up in a variation of the old T formation with two TEs, two HBs, a FB and of course the QB. Lot of things you can do from this formation: run up the middle, dive play behind the tackle, even the old Green Bay power sweep. You can sprint out left or right and flip a pass to a tight end. It's simply a power formation with a lot of flexibity.

edit: No not the Jags. It was the Ravens.
Pierce up the middle 🤪

Dive play Stroud 🥺
Sweep Hutchinson 🤣

Sprint ... 🤔

That's fantastic!! Now if we could just figure out how to get in the other guys end zone more..
Once the D got that fumble return for 6, I think they just played in their comfort zone - i.e., nothing fancy or desperate. No need to put more than you have to on CJ while he may still be a tad sensitive.

I agree and most importantly it worked. Not so sure in the next game though. The ball and the calls are going to have to bounce our way a lot in my opinion.

I would be interested if anyone knows how to listen to local broadcast and watch on TV.

I don’t have a separate stereo or sound system.

I am going to try to figure this one out.
I can listen to radio audio on my phone with the tv muted, but they never match up. Let me know if you figure a better way

Maybe it wasn't Hannah that got rid of Easterby?

Props to Cal for listening. Some owners would just throw a beer in your face.

Is there a minimum number of snaps required by the ring of honor? Just kidding.
Kidding aside, his 226 consecutive games and counting, plus 10 playoff games, as a Texan, a record that likely will never be broken, not to mention I can't recall ever seeing him have a bad snap, should be ROH worthy IMO. Don't know if they'd ever bestow that honor on a long snapper, but I think they should.
And after Saturday night's game he'll be just 26 regular season games shy of the NFL record for a long snapper, which he would own making it to game 10 of the 2025 season.

Agree 100%!

I remember years ago Vandermeer saying Weeks had one of the highest velocity snaps in the league.

Some of the Texans team leaders.

Offense
C.J. Stroud - 3,844 passing yards
Devin Singletary - 835 rushing yrds
Nico Collins - 1,102 receiving yards

Defense
Blake Cashman - 93 tackles
Derek Stingley - 5 interceptions
Jonathan Greenard - 12.5 sacks

Assuming CJ has a good day in the office tomorrow, here is how his rookie season should stack up all time:

Total Yards - 3rd
Completion % - 7th
YPA - 1st
YPG - 2nd
TDs - 6th
INTs - 2nd

If Nico gets 115 yards tomorrow it will be the most receiving yards in a season since DHop in 2018 and the 8th most receiving yards for a season in team history (AJ x 4 and DHop x 3).

Not that Motor is going to get 165 yards on the ground tomorrow, but if he did it would only be the 3rd time since Foster in 2014 that an RB got to 1,000 yards (Miller 2016 and Hyde 2019).

Motor also has a chance at 1,200 total yards from scrimmage. Only Lamar Miller has done that since Arian Foster.

Sting needs one more interception to tie Dunta Robinson and Quintin Demps for the single season record.

Stroud only needs156 yards to break the 4k barrier - and he missed two games due to concussion!

I hope he proves you wrong, because if he does, Texans win this game easily.

I've been lurking on a couple of Colts forums. A lot of posters are afraid the NFL wants the Texans in the playoffs so the fix is in. So if you believe the NFL is rigged you can relax. At least according to Colts fans it seems like the refs will have our back on Saturday.

I surely hope so because the refs owe us big time. They’ve messed us out of several games this season. Lol

Literally every fanbase thinks the league is against them for one reason or another..

If you believe the NFL is rigged you could make a possible case that the NFL is trying to pad the Jaguars wins hoping for them to be the home team in London. At least that makes some kind of twisted sense. But even hypothetically I see no obvious financial reason for the NFL to prefer the Colts over the Texans in the playoffs. In fact Stroud the rookie phenom is probably a bigger story & draw than anything about the Colts.

I don't believe the NFL is fixed but even if I did I still would not believe they are dead set against the Texans no matter who they are playing. That's not rigged that's paranoia. Everybody is against us even the refs kind of thing.

After winning just 11 games combined over the past three seasons, Houston heads into Saturday night's regular-season finale at Indianapolis with a chance to punch a playoff ticket -- and potentially win the AFC South. This is thanks, in large part, to the spectacular performance of the 2023 rookie class. While the Texans raised some eyebrows with their aggressive approach on the opening night of last April's draft -- taking quarterback C.J. Stroud with the second overall pick and then trading up to select edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. at No. 3 -- DeMeco Ryans and Nick Caserio look like geniuses now, with their prized picks exceeding all expectations as immediate franchise cornerstones.

Honestly, Stroud has played like a top-five quarterback for most of his rookie season, displaying exceptional poise, arm talent and pocket awareness. He set the NFL record for most pass attempts without an interception to start a career (192) and then claimed the rookie record for most passing yards in a game (470) during a five-touchdown master class in Houston's comeback win over Tampa Bay. Considering Stroud did much of his work with rookie WR Tank Dell (Round 3, No. 69) positioned as the team's big-play specialist, the Texans' aerial attack has an exceedingly bright future. Dell just needs to work his way back from the broken leg that prematurely ended his season in December.

On defense, Anderson has made all of the nitpicking of his game in the pre-draft process look comical, thriving as a designated playmaker off the edge. Piling up seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits in 14 games, Anderson has exhibited outstanding first-step quickness. As offensive tackles struggle to deal with his burst, the rookie has also developed a series of hand-to-hand combat counters that result in big hits on the quarterback. With linebacker Henry To'oto'o (Round 5, No. 167) showing promise as a tackling machine (61 total tackles and a forced fumble in 13 games), the Texans have a young group of playmakers on each side of the ball to build around as aspiring contenders.
