Texans random thought of the day

He's not instinctive, he's bad in coverage and he commits too many penalties
Ifrom what I've seen we're looking at 2 different players. I think he's a good tackler who's good in coverage and has talent to get much better.

Any interest by Nick for Sebastián Joseph-Day? Chargers fire sale? 14 game starter with 3 sacks and 50+ tackles. Latest check he has not been awarded to anyone.
Signs with San Francisco. I am puzzled that Demeco Ryan's did not think we could use him.

Random thought: Listening to DeMeco's press conferences. Has he adopted Caserio's speaking mannerisms with saying "right" after every couple of sentences during interviews or both of them have always spoken this way?

First-time candidates Julius Peppers and Antonio Gates joined nine returning finalists who advanced to the final stage of voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2024.

Peppers and Gates were announced Wednesday as finalists in their first year of eligibility. They will be joined on the 15-player ballot by five-time finalist wide receivers Torry Holt and Reggie Wayne.

Seven other players returned as finalists, with Patrick Willis, Andre Johnson, Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen, Willie Anderson, Darren Woodson and Devin Hester all back to this step.

Defensive backs Eric Allen and Rodney Harrison, running back Fred Taylor and offensive lineman Jahri Evans made it to this stage for the first time after previously being semifinalists.

The 15 finalists will be trimmed to 10 then to five during the selection meeting early next year. The final five candidates will need to receive 80% of the votes from the panel to get into the Hall.

I think this is the third time for Andre to to make it to the finalists but I expect him to fail to be elected to the HOF this time again as they only take 5 in each year it says here.
I dunno but maybe he'll make it as as senior like the Jags OT Basilla did in recent years. JJ Watt is most likely a first ballot HOFer who will be inducted as the first Texans player before Andre finally makes it (i he ever does?), who of course retired several years before JJ did.

What happened last year, and in all likelyhood will happen this year, is that the votes for a wide receiver were spread among too many candidates, so no one got the required votes. There are four wide receiver nominations this year.

An individual still represents the team.
True, but you would think championships would be all that matters to fans. Win championships and individual awards will follow. Kinda like I don't understand why the uniforms are such a big thing to some fans

Why do individual awards seem to mean so much to some fans?

There is an entire Hall of Fame complex devoted to celebrating this personal award, and it gets more than 10 million visitors a year.

So maybe the question should be, why don't you care about an award that means so much to elite players and millions of fans?

There is nothing wrong with recognizing and celebrating greatness.

I never said there was anything wrong with there being a HOF or players being in it. In fact truth being told many players care more about being HOF'ers than SB champions. For me I think the HOF would be a great place to visit, but I only really care about championships as a fan

Players going into the HOF, Ring of Honor etc .. doesn't really matter much to me at all

Because it’s our history not there’s lol
It's a piece of cloth they wear. It's not my team, it's the McNair's team and nothing more than the team I root for. What they wear when they play means nothing to me.

This doesn't take into account teams and their alternative jerseys.

Some people can chew gum & walk at the same time. Some people are too stupid to appreciate two things at once.

It’s part of the game, been that way at every level of competition. And it’s their prerogative, I’m pretty sure it’s doesn’t mean they would rather have individual awards over championships. You’re being overzealous with this comment.
Over zealous?

It's just my opinion.

I don't care about individual awards. I realize some people care about things like HOF, All Pro,ProBowl, Player of the week etc... a lot more than I do. These things mean very little to me. The W/L's are all that matter to me. I get that some don't watch or care about the things that I do when I watch football.

Some just want to be entertained, others care about FF stats more than about winning. Im all about winning and not much else

When I see someone talking about something that isn't important to me, I don't make a post telling them it isn't important to me. I just... scroll.

Hope the holidays have been good to you brother and here is to hoping Hannah can work her magic these last two games!

The deal with Stingley is and always has been a matter of staying on the field. No doubt he has talent, but all the talent in the world means nothing if you're not on the field. He missed 8 games last year and 6 so far this year. He's got pretty good advanced stats when he's on the field, it's just a matter of availability with him. Playing in just 18 of 32 games so far isn't going to cut it.
Had the same problems with Schaub his first couple of years here in the player that first comes to mind. I'm sure there were others

Maybe so but I don't recall Schaub having any medical red flags prior to his coming here. Stingley has not only missed 14 of 32 games in his 1st 2 seasons in the NFL, he missed 13 of 23 his last 2 seasons of college.

Like I said though, I'm not as concerned about his play as I am having him available until he proves otherwise, which could happen, but he's missed 27 of 55 games available to play the last 4 years. That's a hair under 50% games missed.

Yeah, I mainly just wanted to get your and @IDEXAN's talk out of the injury discussion thread

Pitre has been flat out bad this year. One of the worst starting safeties in the league. His place on this team is in serious doubt if he doesn’t come to camp next year and ball out. DeMeco isn’t going to put up with his level of play forever just because he was a high draft choice. He will very likely be on the team out of camp, but he will be in prove it mode all year.

A safety at worst…needs to play to the namesake of the word safety. Pitre has been anything but safe and has been caught out of position over and over again. Good safeties are also playmakers. He’s been anything but a playmaker with zero interceptions and very very few impact plays. The only plus is he has managed to be healthy and on the field. As bad as he has been that’s probably a negative lol. My season grade for him in relation to expectations is a D-.
As has already been mentioned, missed tackles have been a big problem. He and others this year have resorted to the poor techniques of bump tackling and arm tackling more than even in the past...........the use of good ole wrap tackling is especially important for a safety who is often the last man standing in the way. I've asked for years who has been teaching players not to securely wrap. SMH

You would be a fan of Rugby League - they learn to tackle properly - well at least in Australia anyway!
The tackling techniques are a fine art there.
Of course, missed tackles happen there too, especially when an elusive runner is the target.

think about it Doc. They have so watered down practice to supposedly improve player safety that there is no real tackling drills anymore. Even the helmets and pads practices are watered down.Although I’m a huge DeMeco fan, the Texans tackling woes didn’t improve very much this year. The one game that stands out as a good tackling game, was the previous Titans game. I thought guys really did a good job that game.

It is hypocritical for Demeco to repeatedly say in his post game conferences that tackling must improve..................and not attack the source.

One?
They did good against Pittsburgh I thought too.

It's sad when anyone can point out only 1 or maybe even 2 games that might have demonstrated decent tackling. :shades:
Inability to have full pad practices is at least one contributing cause.

Do modern practices still use tackling dummies? You know, what you see in old movies, or if old enough to have played football back in the 60's and maybe used; a dummy suspended in the air with a pulley and counterweight. You tackle it and take it to the ground.

On another note, do they still use those hand held blocking dummies?

While I do agree lack of practices along with fewer and fewer snaps in preseason games is having an affect on poor tackling, other teams seem to have less of an issue with it than the Texans, who are among the league leaders in misses nearly every year for a while now. According to PFR the team with the fewest missed tackles this season is averaging 3.4 per game. The team with the most missed tackles, which the Texans are tied for, average 7.5 misses per game.

I’m not sure what conclusions can be drawn from it though. Here’s a list of the missed tackle stats from PFR with highlighted teams being teams currently holding playoff spots.

7 in the top 16, 7 in the bottom 16.

Another possible "cause" that I haven't previously mentioned is the players drafted. DM has only the one draft so maybe this will help fix the problem.

Have the Texans ever spread everything out wide when it is 4th and 1 or something close to that?

All I can remember is that we seem to just bunch into the "jumbo lite" formation and get stuffed on short yardage.
I really liked what the Jags did last week in this situation. They lined up in a variation of the old T formation with two TEs, two HBs, a FB and of course the QB. Lot of things you can do from this formation: run up the middle, dive play behind the tackle, even the old Green Bay power sweep. You can sprint out left or right and flip a pass to a tight end. It's simply a power formation with a lot of flexibity.

edit: No not the Jags. It was the Ravens.

One thing that you have to consider, especially with the bottom 7...........the level of competition has been especially pitiful this year. It all comes down to how many deficiencies does a team have besides tackling........and how many compensatory positives does a team have to overcome their tackling deficiency.

Maybe it wasn't Hannah that got rid of Easterby?

Hmm ..maybe AJ can be Easterby's replacement? I think he could be a valuable acquisition and offer insight on the Receiver side of things too.
