Texans random thought of the day

Texans are gonna have a headache trying to work out how they're going to pay our young stars in the next few years.
You got :-
CJ - he is going to eat a chunk.
D Stingley
W Anderson Jr
K Lassiter
K Bullock
Nico Collins
Tank Dell*
Toss in:-
Too Too
C Harris
D Horton
I'd love to keep this young core but you know we're gonna lose some.
Will be interesting to see how our young guys on the Oline go next season too.
Nick Carstereo is gonna have to keep picking well to replace the guys we inevitably lose.

Interesting how there's only one offensive player on that list.

I understand Nico & Mixon just got paid, plus Mixon probably won't be playing much longer. But it would be nice if we had some young offensive guys threatening that salary cap.

Nico and Mixon just got paid. And then you have Tunsil and Tytus taking up cap space.

Offense getting paid while majority of defense on rookie contracts.

Interesting.

Nick earns his pay by selecting players that can be starters by their second year and hopefully after round one to keep cap costs down. Also, drafting late also keeps the cost down.
Shaq Mason and Hunter's cap relief should offer 1/2 of Stroud's extension APY and probably 100% of his first year of the prorated signings bonus.

I am not overly concerned about our future salary cap at this point.

Or they could run their salary cap like the Eagles do.

No it wasn't.
When you read, and also make comments criticizing not only his play, but his mental toughness, using David Carr analogies, dredging up the S2, “I’m off the bandwagon”, “he is not a franchise quarterback” etc, etc, etc,……..

For those of you who are making those statements, don’t get your feathers ruffled if someone asks what it is that you’re implying. Because it’s a legitimate question.

I gave my draft assessment.

Some people called me racist because of this. But I didn't think he is very smart. (Still don't, but I think he's football smart.) I questioned his ability to win big games. (Still do, but I'm much higher on him now than I was then) I questioned his background, (Which was a fair observation) I questioned his work ethic. (Hopefully he puts in work this offseason to help improve this area of his game.) All of these were legitimate questions at the time.

Now, I will say I missed on my eval. Moreso this yr he's impressed me than last yr, because he faced on field adversity for the time in his football life. He came back from not playing well to playing well the last 3 games of the season and particularly well in the playoffs. Caserio/Ryans are going to have to find a way to get him some weapons and protect him better if they want CJ to reach his potential.

Dont mistake this reply as me giving a crap about what people think/say about me. I'm comfortable in my own skin. I just like talking ball and if we all agreed then this place would be pretty boring. Sometimes I miss on draft evals, (Everybody does) but at least I'm willing to put my thoughts out there on draft prospects every yr unlike some.

Get CJ better protection and his mojo will be on display.

With a questionable OL, I observed one replay from behind the offense….protection was breaking down and every receiver was 10-12+ yards downfield and still going when CJ went down. Those type of plays are ran when a team has an OL like Washington and Philadelphia, not like the Texans.

Texans will need to take a couple of WR’s in the draft since Dell probably IR’s 2025 and Diggs moves on after his 1 year deal. Hutchinson had a couple drops in the 1st half that were crucial. Metchie caught what was thrown, but it wasn’t much. Both of these guys have failed to elevate themselves to WR2 or WR3 status. Like Mills, it’d be smart to keep them around as reasonable and affordable depth pieces.

Yep, you either get him an Oline or game plan for quick, short passing.
We are definitely in the market for another quality receiver via Fa and I would take a good prospect from the draft with one of the top two round picks. And a young gun along the Oline.
Defense looks pretty good for now - we gotta be able to score. Watching Commanders tear up the Lions made me very aware of that - plus our inability to put points on the board against KC.

Not a lot of significant free agents to re-sign this offseason. Mostly rotational players aside from Diggs.

Texans will definitely retain a few from this list. But the biggest contract will be given to Stingley this offseason in the form of an extension imo:

I like Texan Cap’s thoughts on what to do with Howard/Mason. Their extensions were Caserio’s biggest mistakes last offseason in hindsight. Howard still has value as a starting guard but not at his current salary. Mason needs to go and let a new player take his roster spot.

TLDR: Cut Mason and off Howard a pay cut. If Howard declines cut him as well.

That dude must read this message board. I could swear that’s what we came up with.

Those are my thoughts as well but I would not offer Howard lower contract. That does not benefit Texans as much as a post June 1st cut that would bring in 14.2 million dollars. I agree that he could bring something in a trade but that slashes the cap savings and you would not get much in return trade. Post June 1st cut for Mason also of $9.5m savings. That is two serious free agents that could be brought in. Roster cap of $10.7 + a pre June 1 trade of Dalton Schultz is 9.

14.2 + 9.5+ 9.0+ 10.7 = $43.4 or 2025 cap hits for three really good free agents.

Stroud may want Stephon Diggs back. Here are some projections if he had played 16 of 17 games rather than just the eight. Basically, I just doubled his stats. Are they worth bringing him back and if so, for how much? Keep in mind, that he has approximately 16 and 1/2 million dollars dead cap prorated over the next 4 void years that must be dealt with. My understanding is it can be encapsulated in an extension but must be applied to the first year of the extension in full. I just don't see how that can be favorable to Houston.

Projected for 16 of 17 games for last season:
94 catches of 128 targets or 73+%.
992 yards @10.6 avg and 6 TDs.
If Diggs had not been injured as he was and missed one game with those stats, what kind of a contract would he be looking at? Would he get more elsewhere? I think he would.

Troy Chapman years ago did post regularly on this message board. IIRC, he got a lot of heat from some people who disagreed with him but he has now for years been part of over the cap.com. Also, he writes a letter called cap and trade that can be found on over the cap.com.
He has the best grasp of and sources of info concerning the NFL cap and players contracts that I am aware of. He is used by many as a reference source for contract information.
