Texans random thought of the day

They don't have to wait until June 1st, they can cut him at any time & designated him a June 1st cut.
to clarify, there is no benefit to a 'designation' for Shaq Mason or any of our players.. as I see it. The 'designation' term for an accounting procedure impacts extremely few contracts and is rarely used by NFL teams. It actually benefits the player more than the team as it gives players a heads up they might not get and allows their agent to begin negotiation with other teams; which in and of itself is detrimental to releasing team. Another reason it is not used often.

I have recently received info new to me concerning 'void' years of NFL contracts. This often misunderstood term impacts the salary cap and as with any legal document the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement is as clear as Mississippi river. We are seeing it more frequently as it allows teams to 'work around' cap limits by extending some money to future years. The player I am focusing on is WR Stephon Diggs who had his 2 years contract re-worked by Nick Caserio after Diggs was brought to Houston. All of his $ was GTD and the $22.500 million broken down as follows:

2024: base salary $1.210 m roster bonus $.255m workout bonus $ .250m and signing bonus $20.085 with this latter amount prorated over 2025 thru 2028. Void years $4.161 each of those.

The player remains under contract and original team can negotiate new deals(extensions) beginning January 5th.

My understanding was if that player is released all void years are accelerated into the next season (2025). For Diggs, if he is released his hit for 2025 cap would be $16.644 m. That is correct, however, my new info says that amount CAN be written into an extension and prorated over a new contract's life as a signing bonus; with a catch.

Example: Diggs signs an extension beginning 2025 for 4 years. The void $ is again prorated over 4 years at the above $4.161 again pushing those amounts into future. Diggs doesn't care as he got the money in 2024. He cares about new $ which could look like this:

2025 base $5 m GTD + Roster bonus $15m GTD + $4.161 new signing bonus prorate $4.161 = Cap hit $24.416m
$20 million new money GTD. This pushes the original $16.644 m but is it worth it for a 32 YOA WR?

2026 thru 2028 void years each getting $4.161 added to that years cap.

* The catch mention above: if a player accepts this. he can not extend THIS contract with one that includes a raise for one year.

I just found this and if Diggs wouldn't accept, I think Nick would go up to two year deal. Market value $13.5 m

You could sign 2 healthy young guys like Wallace and Melton for less money than that. But no, lets bring back an old Diggs coming off an ACL and hope he doesn't get hurt. But no, Diggs will be back, why? because CJ and Diggs are tight.

I'm getting a little antsy about them hiring a new OC...

Unless they are waiting on someone from the Eagles or KC I'd like to see them make a hire soon. Let CJ and the new OC start vibing...

Starting to think if it was going to be Chip it'd have been done already...But what do I know...

If it was Jerrod and not waiting on another, seems Jerrod would have been announced. Wonder if he is a fallback candidate?

I like the way you think. Who can we poach from the Eagles or KC?

Texans salary cap just dropped from approximately 10 million dollars to approximately 1.8. I'm trying to discover why is that is a huge amount in a few days.
Maybe the sites are including the reserve/future contracts that technically shouldn't count right now but will at the start of the league year.

No concern?
Always some concern. But have to understand that both of his extended injury missed games [from 2022 to 2024] were due high ankle sprains [surgery required after the 2022 season]. Neither were caused by empirical weakness.................the first was due to being brought down by 2 defenders in a hip drop tackle....................the second was caused again by a hip drop tackle. He has rehabbed well with his successful return to play. If he is able to avoid another hip drop tackle, he has a very good chance of staying on the field and being a significant contributor.

We have free agency and the draft to begin shaping the OL in the direction to what Caley may want. We may wish it to go faster, but it may take 2 drafts to get there. We'll see what magic Caserio can dial up, but 2025 will possibly be a transition year.
I'm hoping they sign Fries in FA, draft either Jackson or Zabel (Booker will be gone) and let Patterson/Scruggs fight it out for the other IOL spot. Not what I would do, I would draft Jackson at 1-25 and trade up into the late 1st/early 2nd for Zabel even if it cost a 2026 2nd and a 2025 2nd/4th. I want the OL fixed immediately and have great competition amongst the OL for starting positions. Find a blocking TE and you wont see a repeat of last yr.

That's a good question. We really don't have any idea of what we need on the OL. Fisher & Patterson look like they can be serviceable at C & RT (maybe even LT for Fisher). It seems like Kenyon Green & Scruggs have a lot of injury concerns.
Seeing them working under a new OL coach will tell us if they are capable at C & G.
I'd rather see the Texans fix the OL before addressing any other position. I hope Shaq Mason retires. Father Time is undefeated.
True and I wouldn't be surprised to see Joe Noteboom added in FA instead of Fries, he knows the Rams system and can play both OG spots. He got LT money last FA contract time. He should be fairly cheap this go around. Not that it matters but he went to TCU. I wanted BOB? to draft him back in the day. He's very athletic and that's something that the Texans OL was sorely missing last yr.

Slowik to Miami
Good for him. This is a great opportunity to learn how McDaniel has added his own concepts and personnel tweaks to the base Shanahan offense.

As a young OC, even Sean Payton had play calling duties taken from him. He still has Stroud's rookie season on his resume. As long as he learns from his Texans' mistakes, he will get another opportunity.
