Texans random thought of the day

This was the guy I wanted to see the team draft. Kyle Hamilton would have been the perfect big safety in the middle. I also wanted Lions ILB- Jack Campbell in the draft as well. I believe if the Texans have Campbell and Hamilton….the defense is amazing. Hamilton could’ve been drafted, but Campbell’s stock shot up higher than I expected….was a little shocked when the Lions took him at 17. I was hoping he would’ve slid to RD2, then Caserio could’ve traded up to get him. I like Scruggs, but I’m not sure I wouldn’t have liked Campbell more if he was a Texan.
When they traded back to 1-17 that took Hamilton out of the picture. Campbell would've been a great pick. Imagine if Hamilton had been the pick and paired with Bullock. Great stuff.

A defense that could’ve looked like this:

DE- Hunter / DT- Autry / DT- Settle / DE- Anderson Jr

LB- Harris / LB- Campbell

CB- Stingley / SS- Hamilton / FS- Bullock / CB- Lassiter / NB- Pitre

No **** Sherlock! One easy thing is stop the bunch formations with heavy personnel. This team isn't smash mouth. Better to spread the D out then pack them all in. It's sort of nonsensical. Another idea is more quick routes and plays designed to foil a hard charging rush. Where's the short crossers, slants, screens, draws etc?

Lastly, some of the problem appears to be communication. In this offense, I believe that is on the center. So, why leave the Center there? Make a change.

As much as I like Hamilton he's essentially the Pitre in this defense and Pitre is playing very well.

If we're doing Kenyon Green revisionism I'd rather a different player than Hamilton as we've got that spot covered.
If we're getting a do over, I'd take Dallas LG Tyler Smith. On draft day I wanted Jermaine Johnson, an edge rusher out of FSU who went to the Jets in the late 1st.

The only way this works is in single high plays - cover 1 or some variants of cover 3. Pitre and Hamilton have a very similar skillset where they're pseudo linebackers and the further away from the line of scrimmage they move the worse they play.

How would the Texans have come away with Campbell in the 2023 draft? They had traded 1.12 & Campbell went 1.19?

Didn't they trade down to 1-15 and pick Kenyon?

The Texans traded down in the 2022 NFL Draft from 13 to 15 with the Eagles. The Ravens selected SS- Kyle Hamilton at 14. Texans used their pick (15) for OG- Kenyon Green. I still think the Texans thought Hamilton would still be on the board….bad move. The Ravens love themselves a top notch defense and there was no way they would let Hamilton slip to the Texans at 15.

I did mention that I thought Campbell would still be on the board in RD2. Campbell was the player I thought to be worth the trade up to early RD2 if he had still been on the board. Lions made the right move and didn’t wait to see if they could get him in RD2.

I wanted Davis/Hamilton/Linderbaum in that order.

Why Linderbaum wasn't the pick is still a mystery, although I liked the Green pick at the time.

I think Linderbaum was off the board due to the Pep Hamilton “gap” scheme no coast offense. I think (hope) he’d have been the pick for Slowik.

He was thought of as an undersized ZBS only center coming out. I agree he was the superior prospect to Green as an interior OL.

The biggest head scratcher on Green was taking him after the information about him being medically red flagged at the combine came out. Green was a 1st round talent, but should have dropped due to concerns about his knee.

Lovie’s theme at that time was to win back the home town. This played a big part of them drafting Green.

Texans looking better on the injury report this week.

Azeez Al-Shaair..LB...Knee..........OUT
Jimmie Ward......S....Groin.........OUT

Henry To'oTo'o...LB...Concussion....QUESTIONABLE

Just something to think about. The Texans have played a lot of close games this year but part of that has to be the quality of the opponent. Currently 6 out of 8 games this season have been against teams with a 500 or better record (Colts are 4-4 mostly because the Texans spanked their ass twice this season). We are 2-0 against teams with a below 500 record (Jags, Patriots). The Texans outscored them 65-41. We are 4-0 against teams with a 500 or less record.

Texans current opponent record:
33-29 .532

Take the Jags & Patriots out of the equation and the Texans opponents standing are:
29-17 .630

I've noticed X Hutch making some very nice plays in recent games in big moments.
Kinda Nico-esq.
Would be nice if he continues to develop into a #3 receiver.

I like Hutchison, but the big issue with him seems to be he can't really separate. I think they'd like it if he could step up while Nico is out, but unlike Nico, his long speed is not great. Aside from that, I don't think CJ trusts him like that either. So yes he's making a few plays here and there, but those plays are almost always of the contested variety. I fear that if CJ started targeting him more, the percentage of the timely, contested catches would look far less impressive & the int percentage would go up.

Since Nico has gone out, Hutch has been getting snaps, but CJ hasn't been finding him.

93 snaps, 5 targets, 4 catches.

Yeh, his 40 was 4.53.

I think if CJ's line play improved, he'd probably be able to find him a little bit more, but that goes for everyone so..
Some of that may just be inexperience, as well, seeing when CJ is under pressure, coming back and finding that open area to help CJ out. He may need some coaching up.

Not every NFL WR has separation speed….Hutchinson falls into that group. What Hutchinson could be is a decently solid big bodied possession WR who can move the chains. Design slants, outs, and rub routes where his size can be of benefit….just don’t give him Nico’s routes and expect Nico’s results.
