Texans random thought of the day

That's because Merci's dead money is crazy high if cut..of course he could be gone {like Papa John hisself} in a trade but the pizza company has him for a season as his remaining contract years voided...

Seems like after Hop and DW they would be a bit smarter on whom they pay to rep their company. Why not Justin Reid and Omenihu?
There is a Tommy Alverson song (Purty Boys) with a line that says that (the lines in our faces are where the story’s told”. With that I’d like to see Pitts and his deadpan demeanor in a commercial. Could have fun with that one.

Were you able to verify that beyond the unauthorized source? I have not been able to. I really like what he brings to the team. 60 combined tackles and nine passes defended.
,
First of all, please do not post comments or questions re. transactions in the player transaction thread (you're not the only one that continues to do so despite repeated requests not to do so)......it would be very much appreciated since it makes it much more difficult to search for specific transactions.

You can do what I've done here............quote the post in the player transaction thread, copying it into an appropriate thread........then answering or questioning it there.

To answer your question, confirmation by the Houston Chronicle https://www.houstonchronicle.com/te...ns-sign-cornerback-Rasul-Douglas-16409200.php and SI https://www.si.com/nfl/texans/news/source-texans-signing-veteran-corner-rasul-douglas

New Corner rasul Douglas may get us closer to that ranking of number 17. 60 tackles with one for loss with 9 passes defended is pretty good if report is true.

Douglas is a solid tall long armed zone specific outside CB signing. Good addition at this point of the offseason. Will compete with Terrence Mitchell for that #2 job to Roby and provide much needed depth… and hopefully get Hargreaves off the team.

I feel a lot better this week about the secondary with the additions of Hollman and Douglas than I did before. Hollman is a plus height/weight/athleticism guy. Should excel on ST and be able to play on defense in a pinch.

Douglas is a serviceable #2 CB in Lovie’s D. Between Roby, Mitchell, King and Douglas we just may have a CB room that is solid this season!

If Reid can stay healthy and Lonnie Johnson can successfully transition to safety then the secondary will be able to produce some turnovers and not be a complete doormat to opposing teams this season.

Getting interested in the Lovie Smith defense filled with bluecollar players with chips on their shoulder!

The operative word you mentioned is “serviceable”. That’s who the Texans are right now, until they can start filling out their roster with good, young talent (the Texans are currently one of the oldest teams in the league when it comes to the age of their roster). Douglas is another one of those veterans that Caserio signed to a one year contract.

The Texans are treading water this year.

I liked Douglas coming out of college. A ballhawk who wasn't afraid of supporting against the run. But, I have to wonder if his lack of speed might push Douglas to Safety? Texans CB coach Dino Vasso coached Douglas for 3 years in Philly, so he should have a good idea how best to implement his abilities.

Best case scenario he’s Brandon Browner with the Seahawks. Interesting note the coaching connection. Obviously Vasso believes he can come in and help the team since the Texans signed him so quickly after his release.

Wow, I can always count on reading your posts to learn everything I didn’t know. Thanks!

There is a survey about what fans spend at NFL stadiums. Considering the on-field product. Anyone surprised by our ranking?
  • #1 on in-stadium food and drink ($169.95)
  • #4 on in-stadium alcoholic beverages ($59.23)
  • #1 on team merchandise and gear ($380.17)

The NFL Fans Who Spend the Most and Least Money on Their Team [2021 Survey] | FinanceBuzz

They can charge such a premium when the demand is significantly higher than supply .... 72,220 seats in a metroplex of over 7 million people.

I'd wager that there's not 5 teams who have similar population to capacity - Dallas , NYJ , NYG & LA ....

Texans brought in LB Tahir Whitehead for a workout.

A player with history starting at each of the 3 LB positions. Left without a deal, not a player you want starting for you but a 9 year vet who has been a starter majority of career.

Could be Caserio just kicking tires on a vet. But bringing in a LB for a workout that isn’t a ST specialist tells me one of our starting LBs may be acquired at final cutdown.

With the extra cap space would be interesting if Texans traded for Jaylon Smith, listed by Rosenthal as a trade candidate:

Smith is not good, although he made a bunch of tackles last yr.

lol This is from Bleacher Report:

"In a survey conducted by The Athletic's Ben Standig, one anonymous agent said "a lot of league folks" have compared McNair to the movie Tommy Boy.

The comment came in a poll in which 33 NFL-certified agents voted on a series of topics. Houston received the most votes (11) when asked which team had the worst offseason. No other team received more than three votes."

A lot of reason to bash Mcnair, but an agent’s take is not the best one. The Texans gave out a lot of “lowball” deals this free agency. Gone is the GM OB gravy train that probably had an effect on a few agents polled.

Hey don't insult Tommy like that.. :foottap: He was a American hero who saved a entire town (Sandusky Ohio).. Cal is more comparable to the buffoon con who was trying to sabotage Tommy at every turn.. or is that Bill & Jack 🤔

It's not so much about putting stock in the opinions of agents, but rather the on-going national (and local) perception by just about everyone that is in complete alignment with the perspective that Cal McNair is a below average owner.

People in the building are calling him Tommy Boy. Let that sink in. Dude's reputation about being in an office without furniture at NRG playing Madden is what it is. idonno:

Agents understand why the Texans (with very little cap room) gave out smaller deals. Actually, they spent more $$$ than many expected by renegotiating previous contracts. They voted the Texans offseason as the worst because it was the worst. No one person owns that. It was a group effort that took years in the making. But it has been hands down the worst.

Nobody said he was playing Madden.

I imagined he was playing Mario Kart.
He picked Luigi, right?

Thinking of the talent level of the defense and expectations for them this morning.

The 2002 Houston Texans defense was average/below average statistically having to support the worst offense in the league. 16th in yards and 20th in points. They had two pro bowlers (Aaron Glenn and Gary Walker).

Will this defense be able to put up a similar performance? I’d say depth is better across the board but I don’t believe there is a player the caliber of Glenn and Walker on this defense (I hope to be proven wrong). But plenty of solid Jamie Sharper, Seth Payne, Marcus Coleman types.

I have to disagree with that. The Texans have some guys that have flashed potential. But those were 3 solid, proven vets. The 2021 defense can’t come close to that expansion defense. They were special.

I’d put Roby, Cunningham and Jordan Jenkins in their same category off the top of my head. Kirksey too if he stays healthy.

Justin Reid as the wild card who could reach a pro bowl level if the moons align!

I’d like to add Omenihu to the wild card list but he is unproven. I have liked what i’ve seem from him this preseason though.

I do miss that 2002 Houston Texans defense. They made the expansion season fun to watch. Especially the Steelers win!

No. Not close. Roby has been a head case and has poor ball skills. O'Brien overpaid Cunningham, who has mediocre LB instincts. Jenkins? Kirksey? Look at the contracts they signed. That's what the league thinks of them.

The 2002 Texans defense didn't have talent across the board. But, they had 5-6 excellent to very good defenders. Could have been a playoff defense had they not been saddled with an expansion offense. There's absolutely no comparison between the 2 defenses.

Historically, I would put this years defense over only 3 past Texans defenses. The 2005 unit, where Walker and Coleman were on their last legs, and the 1st round rookies (Robinson & Babin) were still finding their way. The 2010 defense, which had much more talent but were the worst coached unit on any side of the ball in Texans history. And last year's defense. If and only if Hargreaves never plays.

Agree to disagree.

When I think of solid players I think of players who can start for majority of teams in the league. The players I put in that category for this team can do that. The solid players on the 2002 Texans defense compare similarly to them when comparing their career stats to the current Texans I mentioned as well. Sure there’s sentimental value for the expansion defense players. But aside from the two pro bowlers (Glenn and Walker) they had solid players (Sharper, Payne, Coleman). Not necessarily excellent or very good starters. I’d consider that category fringe pro bowl, first alternate types. Those guys could start for majority of the league when they played but I wouldn’t say they were going to be pro bowl alternates.

And
Much more LB friendly scheme fit for all of the LBs. I think if Lopez is a hit and can be the Booger Mcfarland tying up blockers they will really play to their potential.
don’t forget the big unknown…seems many of these players on D are getting a chance to play their natural positions in a scheme that respects their speed and athleticism.
