Lacolten Bester

"We almost had another Michigan Outback Bowl moment out here in 9 on 7 drills as Clowney... his first step is something special... JD got into the backfield in a blink but was able to pull up before really laying the wood. Wow. Wow." -- John Harris

"The thing with O'Brien I'm seeing so far is he's coaching every offense position group getting into the details for everyone for want he wants them doing." -- John McClain

"Ryan Griffin has gotten bigger. He really makes Garrett Graham look small. CJ Fiedorowicz looks like a Greek god out here. He makes Griffin look small." -- Marc Vandermeer

Another Kubiak/O'Brien answer from Andre Johnson: "(O'Brien) does things differently, a lot more intense. Gary was a lot more laid back. But it’s still football.”

O'Brien's voice ticked upward when he said Fitzpatrick has been good. It was a compliment. #Texans #NFL

How has Ryan Fitzpatrick been doing? #Texans' Bill O'Brien: "Good." #NFL

O'Brien's seen improvement from Keshawn Martin. #Texans

#Texans' Bill O'Brien said Arian Foster, Andre Johnson are dealing with minor injuries. Team not concerned. #NFL

#Texans' Bill O'Brien: "I thought today was a good day. I really did." #NFL
James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN
Mike Vrabel on when he was going to be a coach “As soon as they fired me from the NFL. As soon as I couldn’t play football anymore.”

"You know, we’ve got some weapons on offense.” - Ryan Fitzpatrick while talking about how impressed he is with DeAndre Hopkins. #texans

Bill O'Brien said Arian Foster and Andre Johnson are dealing with something minor and he's not worried. Said both have played a long time.

Andre Johnson said he tweaked his right hamstring. Said nothing major. #Texans
John McClain @McClain_on_NFL
One of most impressive things bout 3rd year WR DeVier Posey is how hard he works after practice. He catches passes long after others go in

Arian Foster missed practice. He was in sweats. Turned down media requests again. He's talked once bout football since going on iR last year

Andre Johnson could miss a couple practices. He said anytime u get nicked up you're concerned and he's getting it checked.

Andre Johnson said he tweaked his right hamstring making great catch down middle. Not limping. No ice on it. Said he's not worried bout it.

For those asking if it's good or bad Johnson thinks the energy now is similar to the Capers days... he also said he really likes it. #Texans

Johnson said energy at practice now is a little bit like back in the early days with Dom Capers. He's the only player who'd know. #Texans

Last two guys in uniform. Posey and Labhart with the jugs machine. #Texans

Dale Robertson ‏@sportywineguy
LB coach Mike Vrabel had nice things to say about Brooks Reed working extra hard to learn both inside-outside positions.

Lance Zierlein ‏@LanceZierlein
Fitzpatrick & Duane Brown taking time to sign autographs. It's not a given with athletes & fans really appreciated it http://twitpic.com/e92zzq
PDS ‏@PatDStat
Chris Myers specifically pointed out Xavier Su'a-Filo and Travis Labhart as two who stood out to him on the first day of pads. #Texans

Clowney is slowly coming back to form and he moves at another speed. #Texans

When Jadeveon Clowney is cleared for a full go it could get interesting. The explosion out of his stance has no description. #Texans

To be clear, I am not dubious about CnD's concerns at all. I just don't buy Foster's demise based solely on hitting 350+ carries once. The list of players who have hit 350 plus carries looks like a HoF display not a trash heap of 1 and dones. Multiple time players include, Emmitt, Curtis Martin, Edge James, Dickerson, Payton, Bettis, Campbell, Williams, George, Davis...

My thoughts exactly!

I like that O'Brien is preaching being physical, which is something we certainly lacked during the Kubial regime. On the other hand, is anybody else worried about injuries being an issue because of it? Pads on the first day it's allowed...

Not concerned at all.

This team needs to toughen up both mentally and physically.

Clowney! Thank 2throwed for the gif!

That would be better than Duane Brown, who as the LT would be the one more likely to be going up against the OLB.

Well. It depends.

If he blew by Newton... well... we don't expect much from Newton so it doesn't mean much that Clowney blew by him.

If he blew by Brown... well... we expect DB to be a good player who's hard to get past. If Clowney can get by Duane that easily, then that's saying something.

Has more guys gotten past Newton or had sex with Jenna Jamison ?

Per Brian Smith re. AJ:

However, Johnson acknowledged he’ll have his hamstring examined as a precautionary measure.

This early in the game, you certainly don't want to be seeing hamstring issues of any sort......especially in AJ or Arian.

Keep in mind that Grade 2 (partial tears) and Grade 3 (complete tears) are pretty easy to spot.......there's a whole lot of pain and significant limping going on. But in the case of the more common Grade 1 (micro tears), It can be harder to recognise, these are tricky little buggers in that it can almost feel like a small cramp that can come on during a run, you can continue to run although it will cause a diffuse soreness behind your leg that can settle very quickly once you have stopped, so leading you to think you have not torn anything especially as you won’t see any bruising or feel any heat or swelling and feel nothing in normal day to day activities except maybe a twinge on getting up out of chairs or up/down stairs, most of these class of tears need to be properly managed and normally its at least 1-2 weeks of physio treatment. A seeming "tweak" recognized as only a cramp in some cases may actually end up being a 3 month rehab if it is not properly diagnosed and treated.

The reason is due to a couple of reasons first and most obviously with a Grade 1 tear players can continue to run, and tend to do so, even in pain. But limping is not a hallmark of a Grade I tear. Continued pay disrupts the healing processes and prevents the tear from healing, secondly it can depend on where the tear is located, if more in the tendon it heals slower than if in the muscle belly, all due to the differing bloody supply. Finally they are commonly misdiagnosed as just a cramp and so again back to the same issue of allowing the player to continue to run or even doing inappropriate rehab such as stretching the hamstrings in the early stages and so not allowing the tear to heal.

Well its simple if you’re a professional football player, you err on the side of precaution, especially an elite one like AJ and AR where there is no room for misdiagnosis. Both should be undergoing MRI in my opinion. Certainly nothing lost, In my experience dealing with them like this, being cautious may take a little longer and may be frustrating at the start, but it will mean in the long run you won’t be back to see the physio a few weeks later with same problem. You do not want to return too quickly if you are indeed dealing with a Grade I tear instead of a simple cramp, since you do not want to stretch your hamstrings......they must be given time to let the scar tissue lay down over the tear without disrupting it.

No tackling allowed today? I assume by the Clowney gif?

We have different ways of hitting... We have a tag-off situation which is not a lot of contact, a thud situation where we don't go to the ground which is mostly what we do when we're in full pads, and then we go live. We plan that out beforehand...
http://www.houstontexans.com/tv-med...good_day/c9e220ad-8a19-4f33-a8e3-357770c6fdf2

Tag-off is two handed touch from an athletic position that from watching you would be assured the player would have made the tackle.

If he would have been going full speed, it would look almost identical to this play.

I like how in so many pictures you see coaches participating in the drills. Being active with the players...

I also like how you see a lot of the guys playing dummy roles...

I know those LB's must love Vrabel...

John McClain @McClain_on_NFL

Andre Johnson could miss a couple practices. He said anytime u get nicked up you're concerned and he's getting it checked.

Hmmmm.

My concern re. AJ is based on the fact that when you see the typical muscle "cramping," it usually occurs when a player is running. When a muscle tears it is very typically secondary to dual strong opposing forces on the muscle such as jumping high and coming down hard or pushing off forcefully in a diving motion.

AJ's "tweak" did not occur when he was running. It happened when he dove high up in the air and came down with the ball.

This was AJ's right hamstring. Let me also remind you that this is the same side that he experienced his major hamstring tear in 2011 when he underwent surgery to release/remove one of the small hamstring muscles.

Su’a-Filo was playing at right guard today with Ben Jones at left guard. Hope Brooks isn't being slated for the injury junk heap.

Interesting watching the videos how all the defenders are taking casual swats at the ball after the play has finished. The coaching staff must really be emphasising generating turnovers.

Some good Observations on Day 3 by Texans HT.com analyst [John Harris].
...
4. Jerrell Powe is one of the most powerful men I've seen at nose tackle. Just so we're clear.
...

14. A guy that quietly stands out and did again in nearly every facet of practice is NT/DE Ricardo Mathews. He's built low to the ground, is quick up the field but strong enough to 2-gap and hold the point of attack. Throughout the day, I thought he held up well in drills and team and has been consistent since he arrived this off-season.

15. Xavier Su'a Filo is raw but boy, he loves to hit. He has plenty of technique work to do and needs to maintain his blocks better but if you're near him, you'll get popped.

16. Brown and Alfred Blue got a ton of reps with Arian Foster out with a "minor" issue. Neither one of them is Foster, but then again, who is? Brown, though, can pound and after absorbing a few hits, Blue ran hard, especially down during the goal line drill. He stuck up into the line a couple of times, hard, only to run into a defensive brick wall. More on the goal line drill in a second.
...

18. When the music went on and the Texans went to team, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw a strike to Ryan Griffin who got laid out by DJ Swearinger. Griffin was chewed out earlier in practice by Bill O'Brien for jumping offsides, so it was great to see Griffin respond with a big play, take the hit and pop up for more.
...

21. In a later team period, the defense was in its nickel look and lined up for what looked like a blitz. Fitzpatrick changed the play, moved Blue back into the backfield and ran a quick hitting run play that beat the defense. It was not only great to see Fitzpatrick take charge and change the play but also that a rookie running back knew exactly what to do as well.

*from link. I am curious how the kicking battle is going
24. Kicker*Randy Bullock*was under the spotlight to end practice. He bombed a few FG attempts from 40 yards out. He then moved to about 50-55 yards or so and hit the upright, about 3/4 of the way up the post. That kick was crushed; it sounded like a cannon shot. But Coach O'Brien didn't want to end on that note, so he asked for one more attempt. Bullock nailed the next one from the same distance right through the middle. Nothing like a little confidence for a much needed special teams weapon.

Btw are the Texans practicing with narrower field goal posts?

Top 3 GIFs from weekend training camp.

1. Rookies Travis Labhart (Texas A&M) and Lacoltan Bester (Oklahoma) made a pair of highlight reel grabs...

Btw are the Texans practicing with narrower field goal posts?

i heard to build Bullocks confidence they have two guys with 21 ft tall yellow posts on their head, who are really quick at side to side movement. The kid never misses :kitten:

Has anyone noticed Alfred Blue in TC? I'm really hoping he can make an impact with the Texans. There really hasn't been any mention of the RB's except AF, and that's been less than good news.
