Texans 2014 Training Camp

Play-by-play practice notes here: http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2360930#post2360930

Sounds like lots of players coming off the field with a limp

Cramps from the heat for majority of players.

Rock concert atmosphere as fans cheer wildly, music blaring.

A mob of media out there, too.

Post practice interviews/notes:
Houston Texans ‏@HoustonTexans
"He's a bright guy, he's an extremely talented football player, and he'll be ready to go when it's time to go." -O'Brien on Andre Johnson.

"Every position on this team, both coach and player, will be EARNED." -O'Brien

O'Brien: "We have a strong belief in how to win. We all do. We need to try to get better every single day."

"The intensity and competitiveness was good. The sharpness is something we have to work on continuously." -O'Brien on 1st Training Camp
Brian T. Smith ‏@ChronBrianSmith
For my money, Andre on Bill quote is best to date about Kubiak era vs. O'B era. Two different worlds.

#Texans' Jadeveon Clowney: "I talked to (Andre Johnson) and said, ‘I’m glad you back,’ and he started smiling." [IMGwidthsize=20]http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/smile/embarrassed-smile-smiley-emoticon.gif[/IMG]

#Texans' Jadeveon Clowney said he is "limited" right now. "I don’t know the percentage but I know I ain’t 100 percent." #NFL

#Texans' O'Brien makes it clear he's big on veterans. Game/NFL experience can't be recreated. #NFL

With all #Texans who ran passing conditioning test, O'Brien said team is in good overall physical shape at this point.

#Texans will begin hitting Monday. Team will be using full contact "quite a bit" this offseason, O'Brien said.

#Texans had a full team meeting Friday to open camp. About 200 people involved, O'Brien said. #NFL

#Texans on schedule but "light years" away from being ready for #Redskins in Week 1, O'Brien said.

#Texans' Jadeveon Clowney is still rehabbing and being restricted. Can practice, though. #NFL

#Texans' O'Brien: "The fans in Houston are awesome. It's a football town. It's a football state." #NFL

All Texans who ran conditioning test passed it, O'Brien said. #NFL
AdamWexlerCSN ‏@awexler
Andre Johnson asked if he liked O'Brien being loud, "I love it. It's great. I think it was something needed around here."
Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
EZ on the jugs machine after a very solid day. Added muscle and great at finding weak spot in the zone.

Andre Johnson "First time I looked at the playbook, I said WOW!" #TexansTC
Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlant
O'Brien says team is conditioned but not for full pads/full contact. Will focus on that the first few days of camp. #Texans

O'Brien says Brandon Brooks is working hard to get back on the field. Doesn't discuss reason for Non-football injury list designation.
Drew Dougherty ‏@DoughertyDrew
O'Brien said he talked a lot w/Andre Johnson over last 6 months about #Texans new offensive concepts.
Dale Robertson ‏@sportywineguy
Cramps were a problem for several players, including D. J. Swearinger. He said he had 2 IVs before practice and still had problems.

Fitzpatrick had his full family in attendance, wife and four very young kids. He introduced them to Case Keenum before he met w/media.

'Dre said he felt fine today. Had a set number of plays to run and all went well. He looked like his old self to me, not an old self.

'Dre and Fitzy made very nice after practice. 'Dre: "I really like him." Fitzy: "I've always admired him from afar."
PDS ‏@PatDStat
C.J. Fiedorowicz said a "Mid west boy" didn't realize the heat was this serious in Houston. #Texans

The problem with hearing about all those "crampings" is that when a player is contracting a muscle (cramping) while in the act of moving (many times forcefully), thus simultaneously stretching that same muscle, it is a "perfect storm" for tearing that muscle.

Question: DJ implied that having such low body fat % makes him more susceptible to loss of fluid or heat related cramps... I assumed because the fat stores/hold water...?

Reading some into it, and not clearly expressed, but is that a fact or did I miss his point?

John Harris: 25 Training Camp Observations: Day 1
1. OL Will Yeatman and Tyson Clabo, along with ILB Akeem Dent participated in practice for the first time. One common thread among the three - size. Yeatman is all man and Dent is much bigger than I remember seeing him on tape.

2. I've seen teams do this more often but it was the first time I can remember the Texans doing it. Early in practice walkthrough period, the team had two 11-on-11 sessions working at the same time. Do some math, if they run 15 plays in that period, do that for 10 days, that's 150 extra mental reps young players get. That's nearly two and a half game's worth of mental reps at a much needed time.

3. As such, ILB Max Bullough was calling the defense for the third group, giving him those much needed reps (and an opportunity to stand out as an undrafted free agent).
...

5. During one-on-ones, one of my early season X factors CB AJ Bouye made a tremendous pass breakup during 1-on-1s.
...

7. WR Uzoma Nwachukwu, better known as EZ, continues to impress. Since the three day Rookie mini-camp, he's gotten open, caught nearly everything and is making it tough for the coaching staff to forget him. He spun a DB around in a 1-on-1 drill like a top.

8. The slot receiver dynamic will change dramatically under this new staff and, seemingly, one of the beneficiaries of that focus is WR Mike Thomas. From early in mini-camps and OTAs, he's gotten the attention of the coaching staff. During 1-on-1's, he was incredibly difficult for inside personnel to cover.
...

10. As FB Jay Prosch caught the ball out of the backfield and ran free up the sideline, I wondered how many DBs will have to make "business decisions" whether to tackle that 260 pound runaway train or not.

11. Much was made about the lack of timing QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and WR Andre Johnson would have because they'd never worked together. On the first play of team, CB Kareem Jackson was up in press man on Dre. At the snap, Dre gave a little shimmy, buzzed his feet, all the while setting up his inside move on the slant route. At the perfect time, Dre planted his left foot, pivoted inside and as he turned the ball was put between the 8 and the 0. Perfect timing. Yeah, I guess that narrative can die on the vine soon.

12. ILB Akeem Dent, new to the Texans, is very aggressive, reads flow and flies to the ball. But, I also noticed that he redirects rather quickly, an important trait, and one most guys don't have, for fast flow players.

13. I'm going through my notes and I just have Mike Thomas written down. Again. I'm guessing he did something good in 7-on-7. So, WR Mike Thomas. And, I underlined it and put asterisks by it too. He must've done something REALLY good. Yeah, that's it.
...

23. The clear winner on Saturday? Heat. It was one of the hottest practices I can remember and it had an impact on this roster. Plenty of IVs to go around.
...
25. Dre's back...in case you didn't know.

Question: DJ implied that having such low body fat % makes him more susceptible to loss of fluid or heat related cramps... I assumed because the fat stores/hold water...?

Reading some into it, and not clearly expressed, but is that a fact or did I miss his point?

Actually fat tissue contains much less water content than lean tissue such as muscle. A woman carries in general more body fat than a man. A male adult will have water account for 60% of their weight, whereas an adult female 55%. A fat man in turn will carry less water weight than a thin man. Water plays an integral role in the optimal functioning of your body both during training and during rest and recovery. Well-hydrated muscles are high in fluid content- in fact, water makes up 70 to 75 percent of an athlete’s muscle tissue. Fat tissue is relatively low in water content, at about 10 percent. Even bones, though seemingly solid, are about 32 percent water. Consequently, muscular athletes will have high water content when adequately hydrated.

What's important to understand is that muscle glycogen (which is high in well-muscled athletes and allows a continuous supply of energy for muscle endurance) holds a considerable amount of water, and water removes lactic acid from exercising muscles. Without maintaining good hydration, the water will be depleted from the cascade of events that allow lactic acid to be washed away..........the result.........major muscular tightening/cramping. Furthermore, the lean muscular athlete is less protected (less insulation of the muscle tissue from heat) from the direct and the ambient heat, in addition to losing more water due to the heat created from intense muscle action and lost from the intense heat-producing metabolic reactions occuring within the muscle.

Wow, good guy & great attitude. Me likey Mike (#89), now.

1-on-1 video: WR Mike Thomas
Receiver Mike Thomas speaks 1-on-1 with Drew Dougherty about the start of Texans training camp.

“So far, the first day install I picked up pretty well," Johnson said. "I went out there and wasn’t really thinking a lot. I got with Fitz (Ryan Fitzgerald) after everything last night and me and him went over some stuff. Everybody has been very helpful with me picking up everything. It’s just fun to be back out here and be with my teammates and getting back to football.”
-O’Brien’s music playlist kicked off with Rick Ross’s “Hustlin’” and Calvin Harris’ “Summer.” It also featured Jason Aldean, Sean Paul, Nelly, Notorious B.I.G., Bruce Springsteen, and Kings of Leon, among others.

-Official attendance for the Texans first open training camp practice of 2014 was 4,590.

Does anyone know if TC is on the scene?
:texans chick:

I look forward to her insights

Per her twitter account, she's at the hospital with her father (in Austin), and was there yesterday also, so no - she very understandably hasn't been able to make it to camp yet.

Why would someone give me Neg rep for this post? Who's Seegara?

Well sure! Awesome week? Time to get real, buddy. Let me spell it out for you real slow... Training. Camp. Has. Started. I mean you're jabbering about your kid and stuff. You're not even focused. You need to get your head back into the game.

:vincepalm:

I thought something might be up for us not to have heard from her by now. My thoughts and prayers go out to her dad and family.

Good to hear that we are running two 11 on 11 groups. Especially this early with so many guys. Making sure guys get plenty if chances and giving them multiple chances to showcase their skills.

Guys better not get comfortable. I have a feeling this staff is going to be more willing to give lower drafted/journeymen and udfa guys a real chance to make the team. Especially since this is their first year here.

I agree with this. There are a handful of guys who don't have to worry, but it's a short list. I really think this coaching staff will put the best players on the field, regardless of contract/draft position. I also think that unless you play QB, you better be versatile.

On a side note, I guess I didn't realize how tired I was of Kubiak. It's been a nice change watching BO'B's interviews. He says the same old coach-speak with a different flair.

Interesting quote from Andre Johnson on Bill O'Brien being loud: "I love it. That is something that was needed around this place." #Texans

Shots fired!

I think I've read somewhere that Dent had muscled up to 262 last year.
He's much bigger than when he first enters the league.
Just wonder what kind of supplement he was taking.

:kitten:

Interesting that they're all staying at a hotel instead of being allowed to go home. Doing something like that could really bond the players. Good move.

I didn't think that was a new thing. I thought the players always bunked together at some hotel during training camp.

I didn't think that was a new thing. I thought the players always bunked together at some hotel during training camp.

They stayed at a hotel during the regular season before a home game, but, never during training camp, is my understanding.

The previous head coach let them all go home during camp.

I don't know how many games we'll win this year, but I like O'Brien. He earned my respect when I saw his segment on Real Sports a while back and I was happy he was hired. If Fitz can limit his mistakes I think we can surprise some people. Bill is a no nonsense dude. I'm also excited we have a coach that might be able to develop a young receiver for a change.

Agree. When we were courting him, I wasn't all that impressed. But the more I learned about him, the more I became impressed.

He REALLY got my attention when he rolled into Reliant and fired everybody and their mother.

Wait! Mom's got fired!! What do we do for soup? We also no longer see Arian's mom on here, sad.

Is it my imagination, or does this team seem bigger? All the pics and video from training camp seems to show a big, bulky group of guys.

Nope, by design.

Wade ran a "small" 3-4. RAC runs a "big" 3-4. Difference is size in front 7 (and even safeties, to some extent). One reason why we have little depth, is the turnover required to get big at all those spots. Tough to do in one year.

agreed we have to remember not only are we adding to a roster but changing "type" of players in some cases. I am so focused on the middle of our defense.
