Playoffs

Nobody in our division or the league has had more injury problems than us.

We haven't played one ******* game with our full intended OL or DBs, for example. Plus all the other injuries. And now our rookie phenom WR just broke his leg.

I don't feel sorry for other teams on this front. This year has been utterly stupid with the injuries and it's a testament to DeMeco and the whole culture of the franchise being changed.

Adam Schein of NFL.com, Bubble teams I love/like/loathe

"BUBBLE TEAMS I LOVE
  • 1 Houston Texans 7-5
  • Yes, Tank Dell's broken leg really bums me out. Houston's rookie connection between C.J. Stroud and Dell was beyond amazing. Dell leads the Texans with seven touchdown grabs, while ranking second in catches (47) and yards (709). It's a big-time loss. But I trust this team to overcome because this team has it -- beginning with the aforementioned wunderkind under center.

  • I'm not breaking any news here in saying Stroud is putting together one of the greatest rookie campaigns ever seen at the game's most important position. Averaging a league-best 295.0 passing yards per game while boasting a 20:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio and 101.2 passer rating, the No. 2 overall pick isn't just a shoo-in for Offensive Rookie of the Year -- he's a legitimate MVP candidate. And fortunately for him, Dell isn't the only emerging receiver on this roster. Nico Collins is enjoying a breakout season in Year 3, leading Houston in catches (59) and yards (991), while ranking second with six receiving touchdowns. The big-bodied wideout just shredded Denver's secondary with nine catches for 191 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's win.

  • I love rookie head coach DeMeco Ryans -- and his young defense has shown up in crunch time. Look at what the unit just did to Russell Wilson, picking off the nine-time Pro Bowler three times in the final 16 game minutes of a tight win. Cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who snatched two of those picks himself and has four total over the past three weeks, is living up to his pedigree as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, the No. 3 overall pick in this past April's draft, Will Anderson Jr., has been an edge-rushing menace all season, but he provided his best effort yet on Sunday, racking up two sacks, four QB hits and eight pressures, per Next Gen Stats. Seems like the Texans were pretty wise to jump up the draft board to secure his services after all. And there's another level to this defense, too. With emerging talent at all three levels, this Texans' defense is just scratching the surface of its ultimate potential. Scary.

On top of it all, Houston's remaining schedule looks quite manageable. The Texans will face the Jets, Titans (twice) and Browns before a potentially huge class with the Colts in Week 18. I think Ryans' team hits 11 wins -- which would equal the total number of Ws from the previous three seasons combined."

Wow, actual objective sports journalism from ESPN. I am surprised Stephen A didn't call the Texans racist again.
Screw him and RG3, both said horrible things about the Texans when Lovie was let go, and spewed non factual garbage. Maybe the Texans knew what they were doing after all. Funny to see him have positive things to say about the Texans now.

I can't wait to watch the rest of this season play out, it's crazy that the playoffs are a real possibility. :texflag:

My how the mood changes from week to week.

The injuries are piling up. CJ has noone to throw to now. The Oline is going to get him killed. (Damn near did today.) Can’t even run the ball decently. Now the defense is back to making scrub QBs looking like pro bowlers again.

Demeco is a damn good coach but he is not a miracle worker.

Playoffs are a pipe dream at this point. They would get bounced in the first round anyways.

You do realize the Texans are a throwing team and it was raining with a wind of 25 MPH with Gusts of 40 MPH. The results should surprise nobody.

I do realize a QB who may be playing in Canada next year looked like an all pro playing in the same conditions in the same stadium. It’s Stroud and a bunch of guys at this point. A team can only overcome so many players out due to injury. I think the Texans have found that limit. Lost 5 players due to injury today alone.

It all boils down to protecting the QB and making play calls that reduce the chances of him getting hits like that - for example, if you're playing a team that is continually getting through to the QB, you have to alter your calls and prime the QB to get the ball out faster.
We don't want another Andrew Luck situation where he bailed out of the NFL due to concussions.
With the OL injuries and now his 2 starting WR's likely being down for the season, getting hit like this more often is likely to happen. The WR's 3-5 have a harder time getting open. Luckily Stroud wont be seeing a secondary like the NYJ again this season and Garrett is a shell of himself due to injury.

They need to get Hutch involved. Noah Brown seems fast enough but none of the others demand attention, even if Schultz comes back

Hutchinson has looked promising in his short time. Noah Brown may not be 100% and in defense of his performance yesterday, he had someone else's arm in on some of his "drops".

Practice squad is showing Steven Sims, Johnny Johnson III, Davion Davis and Alex Bachman (ex-NYG) available. Sims seems most experienced of the lot.

The Texans are listed “in the hunt” for the playoffs currently but are firmly in control of their destiny. They have a chance to knock off two teams in front of them (Browns and Colts) in direct head to head competition.

Playoffs start this week. Time to “eliminate” the Browns and take their wild card spot :)
And after today's performance, I will be hopeful for every game from now until the post season.
With the return of various players on both sides of the ball, things can only get better.

There are so many combinations of how the remaining games play out it makes your head spin. But in playing with the ESPN Playoff Machine, the key game for the Texans is the week 18 matchup with the Colts in Indy. The Texans can afford a loss vs the Browns. But even with a win vs the Browns, it will be difficult to get to the playoffs with a loss to the Colts.

I say this because if Stroud has to sit out another week, this does not kill the Texans playoff chances. If there's a smidgeon of doubt about bringing CJ back this week, err on caution. We know that Keenum can beat the Titans here, and Case knows a little something about the Browns after spending 2 years with the Browns and 3 years with Stefanski.

A lot of people thought the Seahawks Geno Smith"s NFL career was over as well when he was with the Jets and you know how that turned out. I am not saying for sure that Zac Wilson will be the same but he has had a few good games as a Jet. He had a good game against the Chiefs. I think the kid has talent but he just isn't the right fit for the Jets. Aaron Rodgers vouches for the young man! I think our defense was ill prepared and out of sync but just the same mark my words, Zank Wilson will have a good career in the NFL for what ever team he winds up with!

Seed 8
Houston Texans
8-6

Reason for Hope: The culture. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud has been the major reason for the Texans’ surprising success this season. The reality is the No. 2 overall pick isn't the only factor behind this team jumping into postseason contention. Head coach DeMeco Ryans and general manager Nick Caserio have built a roster that is filled with young players who believe they can win NOW. That was clear when Stroud was winning big games earlier this year and it was just as apparent on Sunday, when backup quarterback Case Keenum started in place of Stroud (concussion) and helped lead Houston to a win over Tennessee. The Texans have found key contributors in less-heralded players like defensive end Jonathan Greenard (12.5 sacks), cornerback Steven Nelson (four interceptions) and wide receiver Nico Collins (who missed Sunday’s game with a calf injury but already has 1,004 receiving yards).

I agree with this, I think Shroud is overshadowing what an amazing job Ryans has done in a very short time. You can tell the team is fired up and would run through a brick wall for him. Not to mention the vast improvement in the defense, they are actually stepping up when needed and making big stops giving the offense time to put some points on the board. Credit also to Caserio, yeah 3 HCs in 3 years is a bad look but if thats what it took to find the right HC well better that then what we've seen in the past where the HC is kept way to long and even gets more power. Fact we are even in the playoff conversation and not just sitting around looking at the draft for next year is amazing to me.

"Culture" was tossed around to justify every bad move the Texans made the first 2 years of the rebuild. Now we understand what the word means and why it's so important.
It's amazing how easily one exciting off season/season can make us forget the last couple of years and cover a bunch of sins.
I have watched plenty of game preamble and only one time have I heard any mention of NC's previous 2 years.

There weren't a lot of bad moves. Using late rd picks to provide ol depth isn't a bad move. Sauce vs Stingley you could say was a bad move. Green is TBD IMHO. Re-signing Tunsil looks like a solid move.

If we lose to the Browns we need to the Bengals to lose to the Chiefs in Wk 17 with the Texans winning out. Bengals need to lose a game and not win out.

If the Jags lose 2 then we would be AFC South Champs.

If Buffalo drops a game that helps.

Browns losing helps too.

That’s just me messing around with the playoff machine.

I think this might be relevant, may contribute to us getting a spot

The Colts announced today that cornerback Tony Brown and wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie are suspended for three games for conduct detrimental to the team.

There's been no word about what Brown and McKenzie did that was detrimental to the team. Both were surprise healthy scratches for Saturday's game against the Steelers, and the Colts haven't explained why they didn't play.

Love the fact that in Week 16 they are still in the playoff hunt, but this isn't a playoff team.

In previous years we would have already figured out who we were taking at the top of draft by now!

And when I say we I mean us knuckleheads on here.
