Playoffs

It’s a tiky tak call. One that can be called, but really shouldn’t.

There are penalties on every play. Such as holding. It doesn’t mean it should be called.

Not saying you are saying that.
I agree with you, it was a tiky tak call. I just don't deny it happened, especially, as pointed out, when one of the refs has a reputation of being a hard nose. Texans just need to play smarter.

I respect your version of what happened, but i disagree.
there is nothing even remotely close to defensive holding on this play.
The ref who threw the flag disagrees with you. And you can see the jersey being pulled away from the body. It was a tiky tak call, but the flag was thrown. Bad calls are part of the game. Texans need to play smarter and be good enough to overcome bad calls.

You’re right that bad calls are a part of the game but that doesn’t mean that call wasn’t a bullshit call that should not have been made. As I’ve said already, I’m not blaming the refs, but bullshit is still bullshit. That doesn’t change.

And being a good enough team to overcome, sure, easy to sit there and say, but when you’ve made the play and should have been receiving the punt, but the drive gets extended because of a bullshit call, that has an impact. There are typically 4-6 plays that are the difference in winning and losing in the NFL, and when one of those plays is some bullshit like that, that’s tough to just overcome no matter how good you are.

Sometimes officiating isn't surmountable when our deficiencies are enough to be a challenge.

We got past the shitty play on defense as best as possible and other stuff which is a miracle in and of itself, but repeated failures and ridiculousness on multiple consequential plays can sometimes be too much. Especially when there were plenty of bullshit drive-extending "penalties" which kept our already-tired defense on the field when they'd otherwise be getting off the field after having done their job. Well of course the defense would get progressively worse. They did their jobs and couldn't get off the field because they were kept on the field.

It happens. But it was pretty egregious and nothing wrong with pointing it out.

I dont mean to come across as callous.

I just dont like where the NFL is headed these days. Look at the Denver/Cleveland game today. DTR was running around out of the pocket and threw the ball just as he was getting hit, but because he took a hard hit that knocked him out of the game there was a penalty on the guy who did everything right. It's like they dont want you to hit the QB hard at all and that's not football. I gave the Josh Dobbs being used as a RB last week and there being no penalty, but a fine over a hard hit.

Time to give the QB's a waistband strap with Velcro disc(s) on both hips (can't make it too easy) and when a defender pulls it off, it announces....."That Was Easy".

I expect bad calls....I'd like it to be an equal distribution of bad call, but it doesn't usually work out that way. Take for instance, how in the hell does the line judge completely whiff on the false start by the Jags LT? Then he has the eyes of an eagle to call off the reception by Dell on the sideline. It's amazing how those eyes work when they want to.

Texans now 6-5. We're going to have some meaningful football in December which is a nice change from the last few years.

The last 7 games have been decided by 1 score or less. Texans are 4-3 in those games.

Coming up next is another 6-5 team, the Denver Broncos who are riding a 5 game win streak. Early line has the Texans as 3 point favorites.

Winner of Texans vs. Broncos will get the tie-break....

The Broncos have come a long way since their 70 point shellacking at the hands of the Dolphins. They are a formidable opponent who have been on a run just like Houston lately. Payton is a coach that is cocky and easy to dislike… but he’s a good coach. It will be a battle of two teams with HCs that passed on the opportunity to coach the other team.

I'm a fan of Payton's.

I liked the movie they made about him coaching his sons football team during his suspension.

You're beginning to become a believer TB.
Brother I’ve been a believer since old buddy wrote that book. I’ve seen the Sacramento Kings get screwed over big time by the officials. Lakers should’ve won the championship that year. I’ve seen both the Texans and Rockets get bleeped by the officiating a bunch over 20+ years. That historical comeback by Buffalo against our Oilers. They didn’t want a Texas showdown.

The Broncos are no joke right now - gonna be a tough game.
They'll definitely be thinking we are a very winnable game. They win it and they are in the hunt.
There are no jokes left on the schedule. The Jets and Titans can win at home. But the Texans can win there. I'd say there are 6 teams playing for the 3 Wild Card spots:

Steelers 7-4
Browns 7-4
Colts 6-5
Texans 6-5
Broncos 6-5
Bills 6-6

The Texans control their own destiny.

Right.
Jags have three tough games coming up (Bengals, Browns, Ravens) so it's still possible we can make it up.
I won't be too disappointed if we miss out as we have our guy under center now and we weren't expected to be this competitive this season.
It's been an exciting season. Our boys have given us jaded fans something to cheer about again and shows palenty of potential moving forward.

Just battling for a playoff spot down the stretch will be a great experience for a young team. Actually, playing in a playoff game(s) would be even better. With $75 million in effective cap space this coming offseason, it's not out of reason the Texans could become contenders in 2024. Dream big.

Absolutely.
This young squad will have another year of experience under their belts as will the coaching staff. If we can add another impact player on both sides of the ball we will give a ton of cheek next season.

Yeh, the false start was bad. Refs have been letting this slide a lot this year but this time it was especially and obviously bad.

Can someone explain to me why if the Texans and Steelers have the same record, and we beat them, they are ahead of us in the playoff bracket?
It's because there's a 3 way tie between us the Colts and Steelers.

I don't quite know all the details but I think the Steelers have a tiebreaker over the Colts, we have one over the Steelers, and the Colts have one on us. So those all kinda cancel out and I guess we lose whatever the next tiebreaker is

No

Current AFC WC situation:

Steelers are 5th seed because Browns are first eliminated in a 4 team tiebreaker because of Pittsburgh having a better division record than the Browns, and the Texans are eliminated because of the Colts having the head-to-head against them. It then comes down to Steelers/Colts where Pittsburgh has the better record in common games.

Browns are 6th seed because Colts eliminate Houston from the 3 team tiebreaker based on head-to-head and Cleveland has head-to-head over the Colts.

Colts are 7th seed because of head-to-head against Houston.

It's a pointless exercise with so many games remaining

There are no meaningless games in sight. Each game has importance. What a great feeling vs. what we've endured the past 3 seasons. I was expecting this in 2024. Like Christmas a year early.

I didn't expect it this year either. Next year we'll have some prime time games, which I'm not always glad to see. Sunday night and Monday night games aren't to bad, but I absolutely hate those Thursday night games. I suppose we'll just have to get used to having a good team. :)

I wish they would do away with Thursday night football. Don’t get me wrong… I watch it every Thursday. I’m just saying I would hate to be the team that plays on a Thursday… then do a BYE week then play again on Monday. Two games in -almost- a 4 week span. Thats just brutal to a diehard fan who looks forward to their team on Sundays. In fact, I -also- wish they would do away with the BYE week.

And all this happening during a season long litany of injuries...I remember last season many were lamenting the lack of depth on this team.
To me it highlights the importance of a great HC and coaching staff - plus a top notch QB that has the whole team on board.

Aren't you retired? It's not like it's a school night for you. Take a longer afternoon nap than you usually do.

Thursday night games are those trashy Amazon Prime thingies which don't "look right" on my TV. I might need a newer Amazon prime box for my TV, haven't checked that one out yet. As to those naps, I used to depend on the Texans for a good afternoon nap, can't do that now.

And even moreso the GM and scouting dept that finds all the warm bodies to bring in for short term replacement

I like the old way of doing it, no overtime in regular season. If it's a tie, then it's a tie.
And reduces the chances of injuries.
A half game is a great way to break a tie in the final playoff picture.
If there must be a OT, make it the first team to score any points wins.

I'm with you! Love the Sunday Night game. Monday I'm fine with as well. Thursday I hate with a passion more than 10,000 times the heat of the sun when standing 20 feet away. It's an abomination, and should be killed, buried, dug up, killed again, burned, hung, and then catapulted into the next universe.

It allows teams time to get guys healthy.
