NFL Random Thought of the Day

I was watching "4th And Loud" on AMC about the KISS football team, and former Texans LB Shawn Loiseau plays for the L.A. Kiss.

NFL confirms DJ Swearinger was not fined for his hit on Wes Welker.

Chris Mortensen ‏@mortreport
Peyton Manning notified by NFL he is fined $8,200 for taunting of DJ Swearinger. No appeal. Peyton: "I accept it..."

oh yeah, that's reeeeally gonna hurt a guy making $19,200,000 per season.
hmmm.... $19,200,000 / 659 passing attempts = $29,135.05
Just think, he drops back to pass two or three or four times and makes more than the average American in a year.

Respect...

James Harrison @jharrison9292
I have made the difficult decision to retire as of today. My love for my family and the need to be there for them outweighs my desire to play the game. I have missed too many experiences with them because I devoted SO much time to my career. My love for the game isn't strong enough to make up for missing one more birthday or first day of school. I am retiring as a man who is truly grateful for all of his blessings. I am sincerely thankful to the people who have supported me over the years, first and foremost my family, the Rooney family and my Steeler family, also Mr. Brown, the Bengals organization and fans, and last but FAR from least, Steeler Nation. Thank you.

I'm going to go exactly the opposite. Sorry but trying to claim some sort of great devotion to family by a 36 year old just barely hanging on player smacks of completely disingenuous self-aggrandizing. Should have just gracefully retired.

Meh....
As retirement announcements go, this isn't all that annoying to me.

Was giving Harrison respect as a player. Two rings, DPOY, 5x Pro Bowl, 4x All Pro... a guy you had to account for.

OK apparently inferred wrong from the selected quote. On the field, sure he deserves respect for his career.

Yeah, he was only offered vet minimum to play and decided that wasn't worth it so he retired. Perhaps his FB announcement made his kids feel good.

Robert Raiola, CPA @SportsTaxMan
#Saints cut CB Champ Bailey. He has made $102,257,025 on the field in his #NFL career

Sounded phony to me too. I could see it being genuine if he were to retire day 5 years ago when he was still good. Either way guy did a lot as an unheralded player. I'm sure his eye sockets' retirement statement would have read like this

'I am just glad we never have to get out face broken Duane brown.'

If there was any doubt as to if there was an element of "publicity" involved with the Cowboys signing of Sam, let it be wiped out...........Jerry Jones has announced that there will be a news conference held specifically on this signing...........to a practice squad:spin:

One of the unintentionally funniest interviews I've ever heard here in Dallas was when Jerry was complaining that the TV networks were "only in it for the money."

Of course ... RT @clarencehilljr Cowboys don't normally sell jerseys of practice squad players. Per source, they will with Sam

Of course, it's not about the money...........:kitten:

Even if it wasn't, why not make the money?

If I were JJ, another reason I would have signed SAM (apart from being a decent prospect & the market he opens... actually I'm pretty sure the Cowboys have always been in that market) is that he'll take quite a bit of attention off Tony Romo. He's scrutinized way too much.

This should help Romo focus more on his craft than the media.

Or they could just have one of the worst defensive rosters EVER and a desperate for talent on that side of the ball.

From Grantland.com: This, impossibly, is who the Cowboys are likely to start in their base defense against the 49ers in Week 1:

DE George Selvie
DT Nick Hayden
DT Henry Melton
DE Jeremy Mincey
LB Bruce Carter
LB Rolando McClain
LB Justin Durant
CB Brandon Carr
CB Morris Claiborne
S Barry Church
S J.J. Wilcox

I see maybe 3 NFL quality players in that list.

Birds of a feather... publicity wh...hounds.

Even if you had no channel indicator, you know you've got the right channel for NFL football when you watch 7 minutes of commercials in a row. All promoting the non-profit organization, the NFL.

About James Jones fumbles during the Texans game, I wonder if that's a first time in NFL history a player fumbling twice on the same play.

New Orleans is 0-2 thanks to their defense which has given up 60 pts in two games.
I thought Rob Ryan was brought in to fix the defense

Good win for the Rams. Their end year UDFA QB played well. Yeah that Austin Davis kid is now 1-0 as a starting NFL QB.

I liked Austin Davis when he was coming out from Southern Miss. He was the QB when they beat the brakes off of Houston in the Conference USA championship game that would have put UH in a BCS game.

I thought Rob Ryan was brought in to steal all food donations to New Orleans food bank?

Then he needs to put the etouffee plate down and get back to coaching
:fingergun:

I don't know enough about the defensive roster of NO Could it be that the players just aren't that good too? I had them as a Super Bowl contender. Yikes

Now that you mention it, who DO they have on defense? Other than Cameron Jordan, I can't think of a single standout name.

**WARNING: MATH**

Are divisional games statistically closer?

The short answer: Depends on your definition of "closer".

The following stats are from the 2012 and 2013 regular seasons combined, according to Pro Football Reference. All ties were included (2 in-division, 0 other).

In division games (192 total):
Average difference: 10.85 points/game
Games decided by <= 3 points: 39 (20.31%)
Games decided by <= 7 points: 94 (48.96%)
Games decided by <= 14 points: 143 (74.48%)

Out-of-division games (320 total):
Average difference: 12.24 points/game
Games decided by <= 3 points: 83 (25.94%)
Games decided by <= 7 points: 149 (46.56%)
Games decided by <= 14 points: 207 (64.68%)

More 3-point-or-fewer games happened in out-of-division games, but they also had 10% more blowouts.

The percentages would make more sense - to me anyway - if you split the point differential thusly:
0-3
4-7
8-14
15 or greater

I'm too lazy right now to do it myself
:D

The Cowboys came back from a 21-point deficit to win setting a club record for biggest comeback in regulation.

That's kind of pathetic at first glance and even more so after you think about it a minute.
