NFL Random Thought of the Day

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter
Bills LB Kiko Alonso tore his ACL and is expected to miss season, per source. It’s considered a seven- to nine-month recovery. Blow for BUF.

So on July 1, it already has become off-season of LB injuries: Kiko Alonso, Sean Lee, Sean Weatherspoon, Jon Beason.

Greg Hardy found guilty of assaulting girlfriend

Greg Hardy didn’t get a contract today, but he did get a conviction.

According Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, Hardy was found guilty on both counts of assault on a female and communicating threats.

Judge Becky Thorne Tin sided with the testimony provided by Hardy’s accuser during the 10-hour trial, even though Nicole Holder admitted cocaine use the night of the incident.

He was given a 60-day suspended sentence, and 18 months of probation. He’ll appeal to get to a jury trial.

The Panthers defensive end will be subject to punishment from the league under the personal conduct policy.

The Panthers used the franchise tag on him, and are hooked to his $13.1 million salary. But they obviously weren’t working on a long-term extension prior to today’s deadline, since agent Drew Rosenhaus sat with Hardy throughout the day’s proceedings.

Didn't Kosar have some problems with alcohol in the past and fairly recently? He came in drunk to do his commentary on several occasions. And I can't remember if it was him, but didn't he hand a policeman a credit card instead of his license when he was stopped for DUI last year?

Yeah I've read that he was "drunk", but not sure that's all it is.
New book "Blood Sport" alleges Bernie Kosar's slurred speech resulted from painkillers Browns gave him -- Bill Livingston
Among them was Kosar. "After a twelve-season pro career," say the authors in a sad summary of the Browns' legend, "Kosar has stumbled through a sometimes-incoherent retirement, marred by batty behavior, bankruptcy and drunk-driving arrests."

Bosch's records indicate that Kosar was a patient and that at least one shipment of drugs was made, for which Kosar paid $600.

The authors paraphrase Cortes' view this way: "Compared to the highly addictive painkillers that NFL teams shovel at players, Cortes says Bosch's treatments were a healthier alternative."

In a direct quote, Cortes said, "We can either do this or get back on the oxy. You read the papers about Kosar, and he's a mess. He's slurring his words from the medication, from the oxy that the Browns gave him."

Withdrawal from oxycodone is considered one of the most painful ordeals a drug addict faces, with body aches much worse than the flu and a sensation of pins and needles stabbing his muscles...

Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger was the victim of a "sucker punch" during an incident over the weekend at a popular Nashville nightspot, according to its owner.

Steve Ford, owner of Loser's Most Wanted Bar & Grill on Division Street, said Mettenberger did nothing to provoke another bar patron, but the 6-foot-5, 224-pound quarterback ended up getting punched in the face. He did not require medical attention...
http://www.tennessean.com/story/tit...ettenberger-tennessee-titans-losers/12953789/

"Here's the truth: The guy said something about 'Roll Tide!' to Zach, and Zach turned around and said 'Good luck with that,' " Ford said on Monday. "And the guy's buddy then sucker-punched Zach.
"I promise you that Mettenberger did not throw a punch. He didn't do anything. The guy sucker-punched him in the eye, that's the bottom line, and the guy that punched him started running out the door. My door guys had to chase him down."

"I know in 15 years being in the bar business, I know that everyone is trying to provoke someone who is a moving billboard. I don't care if they are country music, a rapper, football players or whatever. Everybody is trying to push somebody's buttons. It is a lawsuit jungle out there."
This is why celebs need to order room service and why I never believe the first, worse case, twitter feeds or facebook posts. There's always an a$$hole or fifty out there trying to get paid.

I wish the laws were such that such yahoos could get knocked the frack out when they try and start crap like that.

I had no intention on holding out...I just ran out of gas on the way to camp and my cell phone battery died. It was a long walk I tell ya.

It’s a 2-year extension for #Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles worth $18.1M in new money, source says. Extra $5M over the next 2 years. Top 5 RB $$$

Murphy: Official seating capacity of @LambeauField is 80,750, second-largest in the NFL. (@MLStadium only one larger.)

Murphy says #Packers now have 112,000 names on the season-ticket waiting list.

After tearing his ACL and missing the entire 2013 season, Colts RB Vick Ballard tore his Achilles during his workout yesterday (may have been a compensatory injury to a still-rehabbing ACL). That leaves Richardson who looked terrible last year, and Bradshaw who only played 3 games last year before being IR'd for a cervical disc problem. The way things look, Luck may be running more than his RB counterparts.........running for his life, that is.:texflag:

DeMarcus Lawrence, Cowboys prized rookie DE, who was to be their new DeMarcus Ware, was confirmed last night to have suffered a fractured foot.......good for a good 8-12 weeks........at best, probably IR designated to return. It appears that the Boys are on their way to having another year of an "Olay" defense.

Geez, bad injuries for the Boys, a lot of bad injuries around the league it seems like.

Colts get hit again. Looks like G Donald Thomas has re-torn his quad tendon, an injury that cost him the season last year. Last year he underwent surgery for a quad tendon rupture. These latest reports call his recent injury a "torn quad," not distinguishing between muscle vs. tendon. However, tendon is most likely. Any player that has torn his quad tendon is expected to typically lose anywhere from 25-65% muscle strength, even after full rehab. Back-to-back tendon tears to the same quad tendon could very well spell the end of Thomas' career.

Haven't seen anyone post anything on Tyron Smith extension with the Cowboys

8yrs, $97.6MM extension, so he's got 10 more years with them.

OVER THE CAP

Smith, who had two years remaining on his rookie contract, received a $10 million signing bonus. His 2014 and 2015 salaries are fully guaranteed to bring the full guarantee of the contract to $22.118 million. Smith's 2016 salary can also become fully guaranteed. $500,000 in yearly salary is tied to participation in workouts.

Yearly salaries of the contract are
$10,000,000(2016), $10,000,000(2017), $10,000,000(2018), $10,000,000(2019), $10,000,000(2020), $10,500,000(2021), $13,500,000(2022), and $13,600,000(2023).

Given his age and quality, sounds like a pretty good deal for the Cowboys. Not sure what happens if he gets hurt in the next couple of years.

Aaron Rodgers: Refs will boost passing offenses this year
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 3, 2014, 6:21 AM EDT

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers expects passing offenses around the NFL to be even more productive this season than they were last season, thanks to a stricter emphasis on illegal contact, pass interference and defensive holding.

Rodgers said after officials worked a Packers practice that the way the officials are calling those penalties this year, it can only help quarterbacks and wide receivers.

“I think you’re going to see the passing game reffed a little more tightly this year,” Rodgers said.

The best pass defense in the NFL last year was in Seattle, where opposing teams often complained that the Seahawks’ defensive backs got away with grabbing and holding receivers. Rodgers said he hopes penalties are called just as strictly in the Packers’ season opener at Seattle as they were when officials visited the Packers’ practice.

“I was joking with this crew that we might want them to head up to the Pacific Northwest in about a month,” Rodgers said.

If the NFL is serious about its officials getting strict with defensive backs, that will be bad news for teams like the Seahawks with physical pass defenses, and good news for teams like the Packers who rely on their passing offenses.

Great... I gues the league is still all butthurt that the Forehead got beat in the Super Bowl
...again.

why don't they just let 'em play 7 on 7

I don't know. I thought Seattle was over the line last year even though I wanted them to win. The bigger issue to me is consistency. The rules stay the same regardless of the teams and throughout the game. Seattle would take a couple calls because they gambled the refs wouldn't keep throwing flags slowing the game and pissing off the fans and the refs complied. Then somewhere else on Sunday another team is playing and gets a ticky tack call at a crucial time like they had to meet a minimum quota. Pick the rule and enforce it whether that means 20 flags or 0.

Agreed. The problem will be consistency from crew to crew. Whatever is a flag in the eyes of Jerome Booger's crew ought to be a flag in Hochuli's crew and every crew around the league; no matter the teams, no matter the high profile QB. But we all know all games aren't called equally and therein lies the problem.

During preseason, the extra points have been lined up at the 15 yd line. So far 2 have been missed. When they do incorporate it into the regular season (probably in 2015), it seems that it will leave some "hold your breath" element where there was none before.

I like it. Makes the game more interesting.

Yeah, it's "interesting" until we lose by what used to be an automatic extra pt. I can just feel it coming....
:hankpalm:

I'm just trying to even the odds a little. We're going to miss a few kicks, I just hope they do too.

I've seen a lot of "hands to the face" penalties called on the OL's through the 1st week of preseason and at least one tonight (JAX-CHI). They're saying it's a point of emphasis for this year. It's not a new rule, but I'm guessing it's an attempt to at least appear as if the league is trying to limit the advantage the offense has due to the changes in the rules regarding secondary. This might lead to a few more sacks for DL's, but more than anything it will lead to more penalties and longer games. A part of me knows that safety is important, the game is changing and will never be what it once was. But the other part of me just misses the way football used to be and wished they'd let they knock the $hit out of each other.

Not that I like all the limited practice rules in the CBA, but it looks like Carroll hasn't learned much since his cheating days at USC.

If this was something g negotiated by the players union I wonder why the players went along with it... unless one of them ratted him out that is.

It must be hard for players to reconcile the conflict of being a "player" and a "team member" considering that these two entities are on opposite sides of NFL labor issues.
