NFL Random Thought of the Day

Terrell Owens won't attend Hall of Fame induction ceremony

I get that he's upset about the wait, but come the f*ck on. Or better yet grow the f*ck up.

Dude is a comple bag of dicks and doesn’t deserve to be inducted IMO. It should not be and it is not “just about the numbers”. He was a locker room cancer wherever he went and never gave a damn about anything past himself. The HoF should simply drop him from the class and have no further comment on the subject.

OR...

Have Leon come in from the Budweiser commercials and handle TO’s acceptance speech. That would get the ratings up. I know it would never happen but you gotta admit it would be comedy gold.

The HoF doesn’t want to make a mockery of the entire ceremony so they’re smartly handling it the right way. They should though make attendance mandatory for induction going forward with obvious exceptions for the deceased or those with legitimate reasons for not being there. Outright snubs and diva bullshit should have consequences. Speedy got it right. There’s the plaque and not another word on the subject. Going forward you pass on the ceremony then you pass on the honor.

On TO I’ve often wondered if there’s something wrong with that man’s brain. What with all the information on traumatic brain injuries I wonder if he was a guy who was injured between the ears early on and so what might have been just a selfish idiot a-hole became this loon who can’t get out of his own way? Who knows how it affected his personality?

His childhood was pretty bizarre from what I've read.
When he was 11 years old, NFL superstar Terrell Owens made a shocking discovery: His biological father had been living across the street from him his entire life. His mother had an affair with the older, married neighbor named Mr. Russell when she was just 16 years old and got pregnant. It wasn’t until Terrell was interested in Russell’s daughter that he learned he was his biological father as well.

And I'm not mentioning that to forgive him being an enormous turd as an adult, at some point you've just got to take ownership of your own situation. But if the question is about clues as to his less than charming behavior, well.

Btw, I think Speedy's answer is spot on. Here's your plaque, you were good enough, you were rightly voted in, you're in. End of. Now all the enjoyable people can have fun together.

Understanding the “unrecognized substance” quirk in Julian Edelman’s positive PED test
June 12, 2018, 10:23 AM EDT

At first blush, the report that Patriots receiver Julian Edelman‘s positive PED test was “triggered by a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable” created an opening for thinking that the NFL has yet to conclude that Edelman took a banned substance, and that the NFL ultimately may conclude that he didn’t. Closer inspection of the PED policy paints a different picture.

There’s no provision in the PED policy that transforms a “substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable” into a positive result. Instead, a four-game suspension arises from a positive test for an anabolic agent that comes from the laundry list of 71 specific substances or that falls within the potentially broad catch-all of “other substances with a similar chemical structure and similar biological effect(s).”

That’s the more likely (and likely more accurate) description of the situation. It’s not that Edelman’s urine sample showed the presence of some substance that medical science is incapable of identifying; it’s that the sample had a substance with “a similar chemical structure and similar biological effect(s)” as one of the 71 specific anabolic agents listed in the PED policy.

Whatever it was, it presumably showed up in both the “A” bottle and “B” bottle, which are created when the urine sample is split into two separate samples, in order to allow for two separate tests. And even if the NFL’s medical experts haven’t specifically fit the substance within any of the 71 anabolic agents listed in the policy, it wouldn’t have been a positive test unless the unrecognized substance has “a similar chemical structure and similar biological effect(s)” to an anabolic agent.

Logic points to an anabolic agent because of the length of the suspension (a positive test for a masking agent or similar substance triggers only a two-game suspension), and because stimulants don’t fall under the PED policy in the offseason. Common sense points to the reality that if the NFL truly had no idea what the substance was, the outcome wouldn’t have been a positive test — because the PED policy does not contemplate any discipline for a player based simply upon the fact that there’s something in the urine that can’t be identified.

It’s also possible that the unrecognized substance came from an effort to adulterate the sample, which provides separate grounds for discipline. In those cases, however, the discipline may be enhanced, in order to deter efforts to manipulate the outcome via an additive aimed at scrubbing the sample after it is provided. (Masking agents, in contrast, are taken by the player to hide the presence of the banned substance in the urine.)

Here’s the bottom line: The NFL doesn’t immediately dub a sample with an “unrecognized substance” a positive test. If it’s a positive test, that means the NFL discovered something in the urine that indicates PED use. And while Edelman will still have appeal rights, the fact that the substance doesn’t neatly fit within the scope of one of the 71 listed anabolic agents is irrelevant if the unrecognized substance has “similar chemical structure and similar biological effect(s).”

The fact that the test was positive points to a substance that fits within that catch-all language, and the characterization of this as a positive of “a substance that wasn’t immediately recognizable” seems like a not-so-subtle effort to create the impression that Edelman didn’t ingest a banned substance. The circumstances suggest that the NFL believes he did.

I remember when this happened. Didn't realize that was basically his last season. Mario Williams is still the clear cut choice between him, Reggie, and VY...that's not saying much but still.

Rams to Pay Reggie Bush $12.5M After RB Suffered Knee Injury on Concrete in 2015
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...r-rb-suffered-knee-injury-on-concrete-in-2015
The Los Angeles Rams will pay former NFL running back Reggie Bush more than $12 million after a jury ruled in his favor Tuesday, per Joel Currier of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Bush suffered a severe knee injury in 2015 at the Edward Jones Dome and filed a lawsuit against the team in 2016.

The Rams were ordered to pay him $4.95 million in compensatory damages and $7.5 million in punitive damages after being found 100 percent liable.

"I'm very happy with the verdict," Bush said Tuesday. "The people spoke and decided very fairly."

While injuries are a common occurrence in the NFL, the running back's injury came as a result of an unsafe surface at the dome. Bush—then a member of the San Francisco 49ers—slipped on a concrete surface after being pushed out of bounds on a punt return.

The team covered the concrete with a slip-resistant surfacetwo weeks later.

Martin has just signed a 6year contract worth $84 million and $40 million guaranteed. guaranteed .......making him the highest paid NFL OG with the highest guaranteed money.

The OB will absolutely get Hackenberg myth was false at the 2016 draft.

It was false when Hackenberg was involved in trade rumors.

It was false when Hackenberg was released by the Raiders.

Hackenberg will be selling insurance a couple years from now and we'll have a backup get injured in preseason and someone will inevitably start a thread about how OB will probably look to sign him because hey, he sure did recruit him in college in 2012.

Cowboys defensive tackle David Irving has been suspended the first four games of the season for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

FA defensive tackle Roy Miller has been suspended for six games for an undisclosed violation..........probably related to his Nov arrest on domestic battery charges in Jacksonville, Florida.

Police: Kellen Winslow II targeted older women for kidnapping, rape
June 15, 2018, 3:54 PM EDT

Police say former NFL player Kellen Winslow II spent months targeting older women for crimes, including two women he kidnapped and raped.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Winslow, who has been arrested and is currently in jail, kidnapped and raped two women in May. One was 54 years old and one was 59. Winslow is also accused of burglary with intent to rape a 71-year-old woman and burglary with intent to rape an 86-year-old woman, both in June.

Winslow was also briefly jailed last week for suspicion of burglary. A neighbor who saw him walking into a residence confronted him and called police, and he was arrested shortly after driving off.

Or he's possibly worrying about how Watson would take bringing in an old "favorite son."
If O'Brien actually had that thought process, then he knows little about his starting QB. Pretty sure Watson would view beating out "an old favorite son" as just another challenge to be overcome and put behind him.

No one can be sure about that. Situations like that have a way of playing on the psyche. Trying to come back from a major knee injury, while trying to show that he can remain healthy for an entire season, and having to prove that he can avoid a sophomore slump are enough challenges thrown his way. Don't kid yourself, with all these challenges already facing this young man, whether he shows it outwardly or not, the internal psyche can become fragile.

Haunted but undaunted, health issues can't keep Archie Manning down
By Jeff Duncan | Posted June 15, 2018 at 10:28 AM

Archie Manning wants you to know he's OK. He's not fighting a terminal disease or degenerative condition.

He's just your typical 69-year-old ex-NFL player coping with the physical fallout from a 14-year playing career.

"I'm feeling good," Manning said during an interview last week at Manning's in the Warehouse District. "I'm very healthy. My weight's good. I still work out hard."

But Manning's walk belies his talk.

When asked by a photographer during the interview to switch chairs to a spot near a window, the former New Orleans Saints star rises slowly and gingerly makes his way around the table. It's clear this isn't the same Archie Manning that rushed for a school-record-tying 14 touchdowns as a junior at Ole Miss.

"It's just the normal wear and tear," he said. "It could be a lot worse. But they've just kind of worn me out the last five years."

Manning is referring to the army of doctors, surgeons and physical therapists he's seen the past 5 years while dealing with a series of ailments. The maladies required eight surgical procedures, including two back fusions, a neck fusion and two knee replacements. There were two other procedures to repair ulnar nerve pain in both elbows and another in November to fix a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder after a slip in a Montana health club.

The Rest of the Story

Archie Manning was the godfather of dual-threat QBs.

Watson has been overcoming 'challenges' his entire life. Dude worked four jobs while his mom was undergoing cancer treatment. ...and this was in high school.

The young man's mind is strong enough.
I'm with Molly, maybe Occam's razor should be applied here; Hackenberg just ain't good enough to spend a roster spot on. Well, that and we've already got four QBs on the 90-man roster. Who would you cut?

No one is getting rattled over a guy that's been passed around, on his rookie deal, like a hot potato.

If anything Deshaun would probably take pitty on him and try and coach him up himself.

That's assuming OB even wanted him, which I haven't believed going back to the 2016 draft.

I was never advocating that we should take on Hackenberg.

I would love for the Texans to bring Simon back if he is cut by the Colts due to poor scheme fit respective to his salary.

Per rotoworld:

Colts DE John Simon has "hardly seen any starting reps" at minicamp.

Simon has struggled with his move to end this offseason. He doesn't look like a fit in the Colts' 4-3 scheme and isn't a lock for the final roster. Indy can save $3.3 million from cutting Simon.

An example of how OLB and DE is not automatically interchangeable pieces. At 6'1", Simon would have been expected to be questionable at DE.

Be aware that Simon last season missed 3 mid season games with a neck injury, then in Nov suffered an undisclosed severe right shoulder injury which resulted in him missing 4 more games and being IRed.

Didn’t he also have a neck injury during the 2016 season that caused him to miss time? If he is willing to come back on a team friendly deal I think he’s worth the risk for the opportunity to get a solid contributor added to the front 7.

I think you are thinking of the chest injury he suffered in the Mexico game...........and missed the following 4 games.

NFL-only field going in at London soccer stadium
June 18, 2018, 6:05 AM EDT
tottenham-e1529316130493.jpg

In the most tangible piece of evidence yet that the NFL wants to keep playing games in London, the league has paid for an NFL-only field to be on the grounds of the new soccer stadium for Tottenham Hotspur.

New pictures of the stadium, which is still being built, show the FieldTurf field that the NFL will play on. The stadium will be able to switch between that field for NFL games and a grass field for soccer games.

One of the complaints about American football in London has been that the type of grass pitch that soccer teams use does not have the proper footing for American football. That results in players slipping and sliding, and the middle of the pitch getting torn up. Nobody is happy with that.

So the NFL is investing in a field that is specifically designed for American football. That field will be used for the first time on October 14, when the Seahawks face the Raiders.

Panthers tell Cam Newton it’s OK to check down and go to the next play

“With him, on every play, we want to make sure he has a plan and he’s following that plan,” Turner said. “And to know checking down is OK. A lot of Cam’s issues have come because he’s so talented that he thinks he can make every play work. And sometimes, it’s just not there, so you check down and go to the next play. By holding the ball, sometimes he takes hits or falls into negative plays. Making decisions quick, getting the ball out of his hand, that’s where, when he improves, the consistency will come. We’re not trying to make him anything he’s not. We want him to be the best version of himself.”

Seems as though many people aren't aware that Goodell's $200 million ($40 million/year x 5 yrs) is not the whole story. Only 10% is guaranteed..........the rest is tied to the progression of value that the NFL will accumulate under his reign..........i.e., IF he significantly increases the value of the League (performance-based).

Wonder what kind of financial or economic indices the league is using to measure its progression in value due to Goodell's performance ? Obviously we aren't talking about a publically traded entity here so can't go there, but perhaps it's based on the leagues growth in revenues from TV contracts ? Just curious ?

Eagles’ Jalen Mills says Carson Wentz is “throwing strikes like he always does”
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 20, 2018, 8:42 AM EDT

Eagles cornerback Jalen Mills practiced against Carson Wentz during minicamp and thinks Wentz is just about back from last year’s torn ACL.

Mills said this morning on PFT Live that Wentz doesn’t look much different now than he did last year, before his season-ending knee injury.

“He looked like Carson Wentz,” Mills said. “Of course he wasn’t scrambling and he didn’t rush out of the pocket, but when he was sitting in the pocket during seven-on-seven drills when he was allowed, he was out there throwing strikes, doing things he always does.”

Wentz suffered the ACL tear on December 10, and the Eagles’ opener is on September 6, so if he’s on the field when the Eagles host the traditional Thursday night Week One game for the Super Bowl champions, that would be a recovery time of less than nine months. That’s an optimistic time frame for such a serious injury, but all the indications out of Philadelphia have been that Wentz is making fast progress in his comeback.

He didn't undergo a surgery on his passing shoulder/arm that I missed, did he????:chef:

After his 12 1/2 hour surgery in March for a recurrence of his cancer (removal of large area of his upper jaw and involved lymph nodes), Jim Kelly will be return to surgery. This time the surgery is not for further removal of tissue, but actually for further reconstructive stabilization of his upper jaw.

Jameis Winston gets 3 games for violating the NFL Personal Conduct policy. Has to do with the alleged incident with the Uber driver back in 2016.

The Colts have been having an extremely difficult time of selling season tickets for this season. So, for the 1st time in their history, they are offering 1/2 season packages.

Looks like fans may not be believing in Luck and the Colts.....................especially, the Colts without Luck.............the old Luck

Jim Kelly's recent surgery was relatively minor. His previous surgery removed a significant portion of cancerous upper jaw bone and immediate bone graft replacement of this segment. This would have left that segment without teeth. Therefore, this last surgery was to screw in individual bone anchors into the bone graft that would coincide with the 5 missing upper jaw tooth segment. Once healed without any signs of infection, the prosthetic toothed implant will later be attached to the anchors.

Third man with Jameis Winston and Ronald Darby is now in prison for rape

Posted by Michael David Smith on June 22, 2018, 6:58 PM EDT

Since word first surfaced that Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston had been accused of groping a female Uber driver, it was known that Winston was with his former Florida State roommate, Ronald Darby, on the night in question. It was also reported at the time that a third man was with Winston and Darby, and today comes news that the third man was Brandon Banks, a former Vanderbilt football player who is now in prison for rape.

Banks’ attorney, Mark Scruggs, told ESPN that Banks was with Winston and Darby in a different Uber earlier in the evening, but that Winston went into the car alone with the driver who accused him of grabbing her crotch later in the night. Darby claimed the three of them were all in the Uber together and Winston was never alone with the woman. Scruggs said Banks doesn’t know what happened between Winston and the driver because Winston and the driver were the only people in the car.

“What happened after that, they cannot say,” Scruggs said of Banks and Darby.

The Uber incident took place in March of 2016, after Banks had been accused of raping a woman in a Vanderbilt dorm room but before he had gone on trial. Banks would later be convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Winston himself was accused of raping a woman when he played at Florida State, and Winston’s decision to associate with another man who was awaiting trial on a rape charge will fuel questions about Winston’s judgment.

Scruggs said that the NFL tried to interview Banks in prison in the league’s investigation of Winston, but that Banks refused to talk to anyone without his lawyer present, and that the NFL never contacted Scruggs.

Looks like it's very possible that Winston's suspension in the end could very well be extended.

The latest revelation may be the straw that breaks Jameis Winston’s back

What Brandon Banks may mean for Winston and the Bucs.
By Gil Arcia@GilArciaBUCS Jun 23, 2018, 10:10am EDT

It appears that the latest on the Jameis Winston-Uber case is what will finally bring the investigation full circle.

On Friday, ESPN reported that former Vanderbilt player Brandon Banks serving time in jail for rape was the third Uber passenger along with Winston and Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Ronald Darby. However, the three were together only for one Uber ride. It was the second that is in question, where Banks said Winston left alone.

This creates a major hole to what has been previously reported. Late Thursday, NFL Network reported that the investigation revealed Winston was in fact in the backseat of the Uber ride. Those were Darby’s words in his statement some time ago. Those findings contradicted the accuser’s statement which stated he was in the front seat. But this latest report now puts Winston alone in the front seat for the second Uber ride after being sent away from the Arizona club they were at.

It was also reported on Thursday that there were conditions Winston can meet to lower or increase the three-game suspension the NFL was planning on handing down. With not knowing who that third person was initially, was revealing who it may have been be one of those conditions? Doing so would have shown cooperation with the investigation, but let’s say that were to be true and Winston never said who was with them, then that may go against him as a condition not met.

Yes, per Banks’ attorney, the league attempted to talk to him while in jail. They were not successful and the NFL apparently never tried to again. League officials may have just wanted to know a few things, not knowing there were two rides and only all three were in the first one.

Let’s circle back now to the NFLN report where Winston was in the backseat. This would mean that their findings in the investigation only pointed to the first ride. Again, perhaps not knowing there was a second. If true, this may now actually further extend or delay the investigation or the results of it. Because if the league found he was in the backseat, that was only for the first ride apparently. Now they have to look into the second ride — which you’d think they would try to get surveillance footage of outside the club and see whether Winston entered the car through the front or back. That is of course, if the league doesn’t know about the second ride.

Regardless, this still raises many questions. Was Darby not cooperating, and instead lying to protect his friend? Why was the NFL interested in talking to Banks but never did? And why did Banks decide to come out to speak about this now? Was Winston so out of it, he doesn’t remember anything and perhaps another condition is entering a program? Whatever it all may be, the latest report may be the final piece to the NFL’s investigation.

And it won’t be good for Winston, nor the Tampa Bay organization.

Coby Fleener: Concussion symptoms “still there, unfortunately”
June 24, 2018, 7:46 AM EDT

When the Saints released tight end Coby Fleener early in May, head coach Sean Payton said that Fleener was still dealing with symptoms from the concussion that ended his 2017 season and nothing has changed over the last month.

Fleener spoke to Don Banks of The Athletic about where things stand and said that he’d still like to play during the 2018 season, but that the symptoms are “still there, unfortunately.” There’s no timetable for that to change and that leaves Fleener, who has been diagnosed with five concussions over the course of his career, unable to say he’ll be back on the field with confidence.

“Ummm. I don’t know,” Fleener said. “That’s a really hard question to answer, because, like I said, if you’d asked me a day or two after it happened, I would have said of course. But now I’m kind of taking it as the cliche’ goes, one day at a time. Tomorrow if I wake up and there are no symptoms, then we approach things differently.”

Fleener’s agent said he’s heard some interest in Fleener’s services pending clearance from the concussion protocol, although it remains anyone’s guess if that’s going to come in time for the 2018 season.

**************************************************************************************

This is some crazy stuff. Someone needs to talk some sense into Fleener..............a Nov 2017 incident (initially, like Savage.......obvious concussion [VIDEO] but not even checked for a concussion by anyone, letting him return to the game) resulting in 7+ months of still ongoing concussion symptoms, following 4 (documented) previous concussions..........the most recent previous one to this last one being in TC Aug 2017 (less than 3 months apart).

The 2012 rape case was mishandled by all investigating parties involved, and because of Winston's celebrity, no charges were filed. Privileged then, privileged now.

Here are the details of the most recent 2016 incident.

NFL investigating Jameis Winston for sexual assault
ByJordan James Nov 17, 2017

The NFL is investigating a claim from a former Uber driver, who says Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston sexually assaulted her in Arizona. Buzzfeed obtained a letter from Lisa Friel, the NFL’s special counsel for investigations, which was sent to the woman (named as only "Kate" to protect her identity) who accused Winston of groping her crotch.

“The League has been informed that you may have been the victim of such a violation perpetrated by Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Jameis Winston," the letter said. The league takes allegations of this nature very seriously and has opened an investigation into this matter.”

The alleged incident occurred around 2 a.m. on March 3, 2016 in Scottsdale, Ariz. The former Florida State Heisman Trophy winner is accused of reaching over from the passenger seat to grab Kate's crotch. The accuser told Buzzfeed that she does not want money, and felt compelled to come forward after recent sexual assault claims that have been made against other celebrities.

Kate filed a complaint with Uber on March 13, 2016 which said in part, “apparently a big athlete in the nfl” reached over “and put his fingers on my crotch.” She added: “...it wasn’t my stomach or thigh, it was my crotch and I want to be clear about that.” Kate ended her incident report with Uber stating, “He is NOT safe for other drivers.”

Winston was eventually banned from Uber, and his account was removed by the company.

“I have been empowered by my sisters who have forged this path by speaking up, and I must do my part to make it a little more well traveled,” Kate said. “If I’m silent, I fear that further harm will come to other women, if it hasn’t already.

“He sexually assaulted me, and I have every right to tell the damn truth about it.”
