Name Our Defense

Why dont you just embrace bulls on parade? FOr one.. its not gay, or lame.. a parade is a military affair and it brings to mind bulls stomping through the streets. For two.. it has a great football song attached to it. For three.. the players and media both seem to be embracing it.

I'd love for some other team to pick up that name. Bulls on Parade.

I will give them hell for it..... for ever.

War Machine.....

Playing against the Texans Defense is like going up against a War Machine...

Texans Defensive motto...

Beat us if you Can...

Survive, if we let you....

It's not a football song by any means.

Rage Against the Machine is one of my favorite bands. But, if you understand who they are, what they are about, and what the song means (you know, the actual lyrics), then it's some Bizarro World stuff that a billion dollar entertainment franchise would adopt it in any sort of way.

The members of RATM are avowed Marxists (you know, communists). This is not even speculation, but by their own words.

The song is about the military industrial complex that perpetuates wars for profit.

It seems like everyone is just focusing on the name and the opening riff of the song, but everything else about the identity is just wrong.

Beyond that, it's just a stupid name for a stout defense. They are not parading around out there. They need a name that represents the grit and aggressiveness of our D. Parades are pageants. They are spectacle. Nobody fears a parade.

being a Rage fan myself, I think it would be totally ironic that a group that is against war, Corporate America, yada, yada, yada, would have a song as a theme song for a "Corporate" franchise....

I find humor in that...

The media does a good job of handing out nicknames. If they can't come up with a good one, then NFL Films usually comes up with something decent.

Fans and players need to leave it to them.

This is actually where I stand, as well. Most, if not all, of the great nicks have come from either sportswriters or NFL Films. Either way, pro writers who have way with words.

And both those defenses only have one championship.

The greatest defenses have multiple championships...and nicknames. :winky:

Exactly. Can we possibly wait until we've actually won a game or two in the playoffs before we go handing out nicknames?

yep. Tell that to Barwin, though. He's the one that started all of this.

I don't really care one way or the other, (and I certainly can't disagree with any of the facts in your post), but I think those raging against the nickname are fighting a losing battle.

“I think it’s official that ‘Bulls on Parade’ is the new name of this defense,” Barwin said after the game. “You could hear it: Every time they played that song, the crowd was like a 12th man. I mean, Matt Ryan couldn’t even get his audibles if you saw him. He was having to walk to every single lineman and tell (them) the play.”

LINK

I realize Barwin calling it official doesn't make it so, but if the defensive players themselves are pushing it, the stadium staff is following their lead, the fans are responding to it, and the play on the field reflects the results we want, I'm not really concerned with those not liking it.

I have to agree, it's not an appropriate name for the defense nor is it in the interest of the Texans to be associated with the political aspects of the song. However, after we win the Super Bowl, the celebration downtown ought to be called Bulls on Parade.

:kitten:

Bulls On Parade??? Really??

Man, we'd be the laughing stock of the league with a nickname like that.

What are you talking about, man?! You don't tremble in your boots when you see this image?!

This is the one and only answer. What does it matter as long as it gets the players and the fans pumped up and gets the stadium louder at the right times? I'm fine with Bulls on Parade.

If our goddamned nickname ends up being Bulls on Parade I'm going to neg rep everyone who endorsed it so many times they'll have a negative number under their name. Then I'll send out a herd of gay bulls to crap in their front yard. Then I'll hire a bunch of evil clowns to scare their children. :clown:

And don't think I won't. :pop:

Brian Cushing thinks it's lame. The Cush does not like it.

I think his opinion should matter, all things considered.

Well the guys in that picture I posted above would probably like it.

The guys on the defense?? Not so much.

That sums it up. The identity is wrong.

And people older than 40 --half of the entire NFL viewing audience-- have never heard of the song. How are they supposed to associate parades with a feared defense? It doesn't work.

Well, I'm 43, listen to The Buzz, and am well familiar with RATM among other bands played on that station. As are many of my contemporaries. Might want to up the age on that a little. :shades:

I hardly sit around in a rocking chair, listening to elevator music. I can rock out with the best of 'em! :scarygirl:

:mcnugget: Really??

Dude, I was 25 when they were first getting big.

Bulls on Parade came out in (I wanna say) '97ish. I would've been 30. Who wasn't still rockin' at 30?

Heck, I'm still rockin now. I listen to everything except this hip hop, rap or whatever the hell they call it now days.

BTW, my comment was jokingly raggin on your age.

I like it!! :thumbup

It represents everything that this defense is all about. Plus, it's just a kickass song from the best era of Metallica, IMO.

I don't like the tendency to grab anything with "bull" on it.

Bulls are not predators. They are cows with horns. Yeah, they can be mean, but so can rats.

At the end of the day cows...errr...bulls chew cud. They are not hunters, they don't eat meat, and they are generally pretty stupid.

And calling Reliant "the slaughterhouse"? Isn't that where they take cows and bulls to be killed to make them into hamburger and steaks? That doesn't represent too well, considering the Texans mascot is a bull and all.

I think we should resurrect the "House of Pain" and call the defense Damage, Inc. They go together! :bat:

This. Bring back the House of Pain.

Why would bulls be parading around a slaughter house?
Why would bulls be parading in a slaughter house?
Why would bulls be parading in the first place? Is it a pride festival? Will there be rainbows?
I think you get the point. If you have to think too much about what a nickname means than it shouldn't be.

Plus if you name a bad ass defense a gay name the football gods will smite us.

Now that is funny and coming from a fellow old person too. I never heard of this band, never heard of the song, and had to look up the lyrics as I didn't understand a word they said.

I was old in '97 when they came out (over 50) and all kids had long since left to play their music elsewhere.

If Bulls on Parade is what works, far be it from me to get in the way of the youngins among us even though I totally agree with Thorn. As long as they keep winning they can call themselves twinkle bullettes and wear ballet slippers for all I care.

You know, at first, I had no earthly idea that was the name of a band, I just thought that it sounded absolutely horrible! LOL

Saying "its a football song" is an easy way of saying its a song with a lot of energy that evokes violent feelings.

I didnt actually mean that its a song about football.

Man... You ARE old! There's Lawrence Welk or Bing Crosby if you need them.

I'm more of a Led Zepplen or Rolling Stones kind ah guy. Now, once you get past the early ages of MTV and the 80s, unless it's Bruce Sprintstein or Creed, I probably have no idea of who you are talking about.

You lost me at Creed!! So, you're Nickelback's fan?

That's a damned fine point there Senor... [must spread rep]
If this we ride this defense to the promised land, history will grant them a fitting and proper moniker. No need to force fit one on them.

yeah, I kinda' figure. I just have a hard time ignoring what the song is about, but that's just the way my mind words.

Personally, I think Pantera's "Walk" is an awesome riff and the lyrics can really represent what this D is all about.

Plus, they already have this riff in the rotation, Pantera is from Texas, and they are 100% capitalists.

But I'm partial, so I cannot be objective about this song. :headbang:

p.s. RIP Dimebag...7 years ago tomorrow... :(

Seconded!! Yes please!!

Oh wait. I'm over 40, so I probably don't know who Pantera is (or sadly was).

Yeah, I certainly agree. If the players (emphasis on the plural) don't like it, then they need to scratch it. But if the players like the song and it gets them pumped up during the game and causes them to play like they did against Atlanta, then I don't care what you call them.

Well the guys in that picture I posted above would probably like it.

The guys on the defense?? Not so much.

I don't think any of us know what the rest of the players think about it. Hell, my thing with it is I don't care so much about the name. I just think it is a bad ass song and is the type of song that gets people on their feet rocking out. Sunday was the loudest I have ever heard Reliant and people were going nuts when "Bulls on Parade" started playing.

Honestly, I think some of you are too homophobic. Why does a parade have to be gay? A parade is a celebration. You can say something like, "When I am done with you, I am going to parade all over your ass" meaning you are going to be standing over them celebrating after you get done beating the crap out of them.

But what do I know? I mean obviously a parade can only have to do with homosexuals...

Dang. I just watched that back to back and now I feel like tackling someone in my office!

Damn, last week DB calls me a bigot, and now you're calling me homophobic. I'm building quite the reputation for myself. :thumbup

It's just a terrible name for a unit on a football team that is supposed to be intimidating. It sounds corny and it sounds soft. It doesn't give me any sort of mental picture of scary defensive team. Fans from other teams would laugh their asses off at us. Hell, just in this thread alone there have been multiple people that have gotten a bad vibe from that name. What do you thin the rest of the league would feel like if half of our fan base wouldn't even like it?
