My (angry) letter to Laremy Tunsil

1001,
1002

Move left foot
Naw he wouldn’t understand that. You need to sing…
Put your little foot
Put your little foot
Put your little foot right there….
Put your little foot
Put your little foot
Put your little foot right there….

I would agree with you on a guy like Dawkins if the Texans were going to be a run heavy team but we should not be a run heavy team. With our wide receiver / tight ends, we should be an extremely heavy passing team. You do not develop a wide receiver room as Houston has and then run the ball 50% of the time or more.
Yes, as stated Tunsil should block better but I want our offensive line to keep Stroud on his feet and throwing the ball. If they can run block in addition, that's gravy for the fried chicken.
Akers 3.3
Stroud 7.2.
Yeah go run the ball every 1st down...
I'd love if we could recreate the greatest show on turf. They passed the ball a lot, but they ran it quite a bit as well.

Looking at Mixon & Akers... I mean their not Marshall Faulk but their utility in the passing game should move us in that direction.

Agreed, I'm not looking for balance each game.

If the passing game is working focus on that.

If the run game is working focus on that.

Lol now that is the comparison I wanted to see and it is a good one.
Like I said last game was terrible.

Howard basically said the refs called the Vikes game differently than the 1st two games. Howard had a false start as well. A couple of false starts a game shouldn't affect the offense much at all. 45 false starts in 70 games isn't real bad, despite what some posters around these parts think.

But that requires flexibility and adaptability by our oline from one week to the next. It remains to be seen if they can do that week in and week out. I am old school and believe football games are won in the trenches. Based on our iffy oline, I still dont know if we are pretenders or contenders.

I think Duane was underpaid. He didn’t get the highest contract in the NFL for a LT. Not even close. I mean… when he signed that extension… he had the 16th highest salary at LT. middle of the pack in terms of salary so he was a -bargain-. Tunsil is worth exactly what he is being paid.

I agree that he has to -do- better but I don’t think he necessarily needs to “get” better as a LT. He’s -already- top 3 at his position. Duane Brown never was that… and boy did I LOVE Duane brown!!!! He was a run blocking menace!!!!! Total opposite of Tunsil.
I thought Duane Brown had multiple seasons where he was a top 3 LT. In 2012 he only gave up 6.5 sacks without having a single holding penalty. I think his overall impact was much greater than Laremy's. Tunsil might be slightly better in pass protection (which when you add in the penalties I don't even know if I would take Tunsil in that department).. but what moves Brown head and shoulders above Tunsil is his dominance in the running game, which is a afterthought in Tunsil's game.

I forgot who it was against, but I remember a play where Arian broke a huge run and on the highlight Duane Brown laid multiple blocks damn near 20 yards down the field to clear the way. He was athletic as hell as far as linemen go. Knowing what I know now about both players, I'm taking a prime Duane Brown over Tunsil all day.

That would result in a delay of game

A very fair post

Yes and they do not have to be Marshall Faulk. In the scheme I want to see and the one Ryans and our GM put together, we could be that offensive aerial attack.

We've got the five starters we (the Texans) want to be starting. Now they need to gel. It's only been 3 games & Scruggs missed one.

Marshall Faulk was the straw that stirred that drink.

I would think most fans would agree that Texans probably would not have gone as far as they did in 2023 without him.
They wouldn't.. which is why I stuck by him until now.. I don't know if everyone is aware of Stroud's sack totals, but they aren't great. People ignore mistakes when the QB is upright consistently making plays.. when he's not it's rabble rabble pitch fork time.

Yeah... everyone in 2023 said CJ Stroud was the main reason we got to the playoffs as deeply as we did. What is the difference in the players on the line of offense 2024 from last year? Same left tackle, so far a better left guard, Scruggs so far.. better, Right Guard exactly the same player and finally right tackle is the same guy
That much was expected of but maybe healthier.

2023 going into game 4, we were 1 and 2 and won two more.
Now 2 and 1 and should at least split next 2 resulting 3 and 2.

It goes beyond the basics, though. Yes, he's borderline elite in pass blocking. He's finesse...but it gets the job done. He uses his elite athleticism to wall guys off with his great feet. He moves incredibly well for a big man. NO question about that part of his game. But that's the only part of his game that's elite. Then you've got certain personal characteristics that I feel are way less than stellar. I'm not sure how this guy wears a captain patch. I'd rather have Captain Crunch out there with a C.

He could be an annual all-pro if he cleaned up the simple stuff and actually cared about being as elite in the run game as he is in the pass game. I saw some progress in the Colts game...but now I wonder if it was just the Colts not being good. He tries to finesse guys and just get in the way. I want someone that will come with a mean streak like the guy just stole his wife. Lay some freaking wood! Be a mean SOB with slobber hanging down like a freaking junkyard dog. Remember the Redskins line back in the day? They were the hogs (IIRC). This team's line is more like a pen full of kittens. When I say Tunsil rubs off on the other lineman - it's attitude and it permeates the entire line. The line is like Mr. Whipple holding a package of Charmin. Tunsil just gets in the way and says excuse me sir, I'm sorry...coming through. He's a french poodle. Give me Kujo with rabies! Bare some teeth and act like you're about to knock someone's head off their shoulders! His Mr. Whipple act infects the others like the Black Plague. He is THE leader. Act like it!

I'd take prime Duane Brown all day, every day over Tunsil. Duane cared about the run game and kicked ass in both phases of the game...while playing clean for the most part. Yes...they all get a penalty here or there but the pre-snap stuff with Tunsil is way way over the top.

And here's the irony which I'm not sure Tunsil is bright enough to understand. But if you can run on first down and get a lot of 2nd and 3rd and shorts...that makes your life easier as a pass blocker on 3rd down. In other words...if he gave a crap...he could be even more elite in pass blocking and help his lineman teammates as well, including CJ. Sunday, I think I read only one 3rd down was under 7 yards to go and most were over 10 yards. That's a combo of poor run blocking, and those nasty penalties.

Of course it does. There is plenty of time for Tunsil to correct his mistakes as also applies to his coworkers.
You sound like my highschool guidance counselor.. it's up to him to clean up those mistakes that he should of made 4 years ago..

When it comes to Tunsil the juice ain’t worth the squeeze. He is not SWARM either.

Special work ethic? Nope. He spends as much time avoiding practice and working on fine details as anyone on the team.

Relentless mindset? Not a chance.

He is a guy who helps make the whole worse than the individual parts. That combined with poor coaching is making this line among the leagues worst. If they have any pride left at all, this line will play clean and come out with an attitude this Sunday. I’ll wait.

Funny how the team voted him captain, almost as if they don't think he's selfish or lack leadership.

But what do they know, they only spend all day with him 5 days a week. We've got media bites.
I can see why he’s popular among teammates. Look at how much money he’s made without an agent. I’d want to be friends with him.

But I can also see his play on the field not being worthy of being a Captain. You don’t lead the league in false starts multiple years if you gave a damn about fixing it.

Hard to say, really. Do I want thefalse starts to stop? Of course I do. How do we fix that?

One way is to tell Tunsil to wait until the ball is snapped, so instead of looking at the defense he's looking at the ball waiting for the ball to move then kicking back while turning to locate the speed rusher lined up two yards off his left shoulder.

I don't think that's going to work very well.

We could tell Tunsil to wait until the edge defender moves into the neutral zone.

I don't think that will work well.

We could set him next to a clock & test his internal timing. Then test the centers internal timing. I'm going to bet it's not Tunsil's timing that's off. I think that's what his statements have been saying without mentioning names.

I would bet money... not that I'm sure that is the issue but I'm sure it's not the simple mindlessness we see in young players with false starts. This is something else.

Tunsil has an 82.2 pass blocking grade this season, according to Pro Football Focus. He had a 91.4 pass blocking grade against the Vikings, allowing zero sacks, pressures, hurries or hits. He hasn’t allowed a pressure since the season-opening win over the Indianapolis Colts when he was blamed for two sacks by the analytics site. He had an 85.4 pass blocking grade last season and a career-high 91.7 mark two years ago.

I hate people that dodge accountability and don’t accept responsibility and toss around excuses like candy. It’s weak sauce and a pet peeve on steroids for me.

Just own it Laremy. Tell us it’s on you to fix…not “us”, not refs, not same page. YOU in all caps! No excuses dude. Get off your high horse and for once act like you give a damn.

This is him not thinking he can beat his man unless he gets a head start.

The quarterback tells them which part of the cadence means snap the ball while they are huddled up calling the play.

Which would normally be a Center issue if it weren't for the fact that Tunsil is a career offender.
Correct. I propose we watch our OL & see if our protection problems are due to everyone else waiting until the ball is snapped. We've got a lot of "talent" on this OL & it doesn't make sense Cj is getting hit as often as he's been getting hit.

Tunsil's false starts is not why Cj is getting hit. A couple of years ago someone posted a video showing Tunsil's get off was uncanny fast because of his timing. & the false starts are most likely due to the ball not being snapped when it's supposed to be snapped.

Again, I'm not saying that is the problem but we're too talented up front to give up the pressure we're giving up.

Kenyon Green and Tytus Howard are both over rated. Neither can move well because of previous major injuries which have left them with chronic problems. Scruggs, despite making it off the injury report last week is still bothered by his groin pull, leaving him thus far with difficulty blocking against the resistance of the heavies in the middle.

Question Doc. Will that groin pull slowly get better while playing or is this going to be a persistent issue the entire season?
