JJ Watt - MVP

I think Watt would be perfect to redo James Arness in the old Gunsmoke series.

I'm not seeing it.

I'm with ya... 2.5 sacks against Bortles ain't no step

According to the list, he needs 3.5 to get there and he hasn't had a three sack game ... yet. But I still think other parts of his game put him in a league of his own, not merely near the top of the all time sack competition.

He had 3 sacks last time we played the Jags.

don't see how he has 17.5 right now. 2.5 should do it !

I want him to have a 4-5 sack day so there will be no doubt that he's made 20+

And nfl.com has J.J. at 17.5

And didn't the league erase one of his sacks earlier this season for some B/S reason??

Ummm yes he has. 3 against the same team he goes against this Sunday

I know there is a who does Watt remind you of thread, but don't feel like resurrecting it. My dad no longer pays attention to football, doesn't know Watt from Adam. Took him to the game yesterday. He turned to me in the 3rd quarter and said, "that guy reminds me of Bob Lilly, he never quits."

Good comparison

Cool you were able to take your dad to the game

Tom Landry once said that "another Lilly won't come along in my time" ...

Landry passed in 2000 ...

J.J. began playing football in 5th grade, at about 11 years old. He was born in '89 ...

Just sayin ...

All these talks of 20 sacks season, I don't know how much Watt knows it himself but this dude could easily rack up 30 sacks in a season. The cost? Sacrificing his ball swatting repertoire. Every game I watched of him for the past 3 season JJ shortchanged himself at least 1-2 sacks a game along with countless body hits when he pulled up from a pass rush moves to swatt a pass.

I would say by far the biggest thing preventing JJ from getting to the QB every game is not double teams but his desire to swat passes. It's great when he does his finger wagging after a batted ball but if you watch his block attempt he guesses wrong most of the time leaving his feet and taken himself out of play. I've seen him numerous times where he stopped short of the QB path to block a pass only to be duped by a shoulder fake when a straight pursuit could lead into a sack fumble. It's just not worth it to go up for every passes.

Watt is better off focusing his pursuit at getting to the QB. All those QB hits and sacks that gets totaled at the end of the game will have a bigger impact and create far more turnovers opportunities than 1 or 2 batted passes a game.

JJ has said repeatedly that he pulls up when he see's he's not going to get to the qb. Most of his attempts to swat a pass comes and he's not close to the qb. He wouldn't be attempting to swat a pass if the qb wasn't in the process of throwing the ball. Your post is just silly. You would have him get roughing calls constantly.

Yeah, I doubt he could change all those attempted swats into more than 1 maybe 2 sacks a season. Maybe 0.

Not to mention, I've seen numerous bad passes where you just know the QB was worried about the pass getting sWatted.

Guy sacked Flacco on the 2pt conversion *and* on 4th down to seal the game. Not to mention all the other stuff he did in the game.

Tell me more about how he's not the MVP.

ESPN's Chris Mortenson is on board the MVP train!!!

Chris Mortensen @mortreport
Even without a playoff berth, this is a rare year when a defensive star, JJ Watt, has now justified his league MVP credentials.

Keyshawn Johnson said if he had a vote it would go to JJ Watt on The Dan Patrick show. Can't supply a link as I don't know how to link to my TV.

I picked a random game out of a hat, the lost to Cincinnati. First play Watt went into his swatter mode instead of pushing a double team into Dalton escape path.
play#1
Second play, Watt stunt up the middle, raised his hands for a second that caused him to lose leverage and got pushed aside by a guard.
play#2
3rd play, Watt hesitated for a fraction of a second into his swatter mode that allowed a blocker to put his hands on him.
play#3

You can take a pic of yourself standing next to the TV. That's good enough.

The world needs more people like you. Not afraid to tell the best defensive player in the league how to do his damn job.

I wouldn't change a thing. Sacks aren't everything.

If I'm the opposing QB and I see Watt stopping behind a lineman to block a pass attempt, I'm saying good stay there. The elite QBs isn't going to get discourage if couple of their passes get tipped. You knock them off their asses a few times they'll be rattled up all day.

Look at the hits Cushing & Dent laid on Flacco. His mind had no chance at peace after those hits. Here's a couple more missed QB hits/sack from Watt:
Failed Swatt

they dont particularly appreciate when those tips turn into interceptions though. you know, like the one two days ago by crick.

JJ Watt has one job... and guess what, it's NOT to get sacks. His #1 priority is to help stop the opposing offense from scoring. That's it! If JJ starts letting passes fly over his head because he wants to pad his sack numbers, that's the day I start to lose respect for the guy.

I know, if you could be DC, you'd turn our potential MVP (perhaps the greatest of all time) into another Mario Williams.

You're not even laughable at this point... you're making yourself look like an idiot

:swatter:

I took the time to create a video and upload it to a server and instead of opinion and objectives you revert to calling me an idiot? What's the point of that jab?

My point is QB hits has a bigger impact than tipped passes. If your only counter is name-calling then who's the idiot?

How often do those tipped passes actually turn into ints. Very rarely. How often does a QB that is getting hit constantly in a game come out from the winning end? Very rarely.

Your link has audio but no video. I wasn't calling you an idiot, but making yourself look like one with your assumption and refusing to listen to any counters to it.

But carry on if you wish. No one is listening to you, and JJ for damn sure isn't going to take your advice.

One of the reasons that JJ is one of the best in the league is those swatted passes, the occasional interception and touchdown off them.

it happens enough to notice, and in 4 years watt has already turned 2 swatt attempts into touchdowns himself. one of his jumps sunday resulted in a pass that was airmailed over him by flacco, and not far from an interception as a result. if watt sees a quick drop, or decides early that his rush wont get there, he makes the wise choice - disrupt the throwing lane.

he hits the quarterback all day. to say allowing a completion just to late hit the quarterback is better than a tipped pass and the chaos it can create - is just absurd. there's a very obvious reason you're alone in this debate.

You know, if that wacky Einstein fella hadn't wasted time fooling around with any ideas about radiation energy being not necessarily a continuous wavefront but an individual photon capable of a wave-particle duality, and could just have focused himself on making a better sound wave frequency, we would have had Beats by Al a long time ago.

He got his hits and pressures as well as keeping the tip in the QBs mind. I do not support the notion of that one dimensional play from Watt would be superior to the way he is playing now.

The tipped passes by Crick and all the others that happened at a crowded line of scrimmage is not what I'm talking about. It's when defensive players that are behind the los and nearing a QB slowed down on their pass rush moves to put their hands up. If they lucky enough to get their hands on the ball then it's just another incomplete pass by the QB. They're better off blowing through the blocker that could result in a sack, a crushing QB hit, or a hurried throw that is more likely to produce an incomplete pass or an interception.
