Injury Discussion Thread

I think it all depends on where you're getting your snapcounts from. Some places list ST and some places don't.

I can't figure out why anyone would not count them as special teams are such an important part of the game.

As @Lucky already pointed out, snap counts, including ST, can be found at Pro Football Reference and on the official NFL Gamebook, both usually the day after the game. I think. Might be the Tuesday after a Sunday game. Not sure on that.

Recent "League source" report (still no official Texans report): Mixon had a magnetic resonance imaging exam Monday and his injury is not considered a long-term issue.

This type of nondescript report does not tell us anything. I've heard "not considered a long-term issue" too often............not unlike an injury description of "minor." What does "not long-term" mean?....................1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months?...........out of action?...............continued debility when playing?

Don’t you think it’s unreasonable to expect that level of transparency? And is it any different with other teams?

Most teams give some idea of how long an injured player, especially a major starter,l is expected to be out.............such as day-to-day. week-to-week, etc. The Texans organization have not officially reported anything 48 hours post injury.

That's unfortunate. I liked how Tooley looked.

@CloakNNNdagger Any idea what happened to Brevin Jordan? Did he get injured in the game or practice? Is this a short term IR injury or season ending?
He was limited in the Bears game to 1 target and 4 yds (after being targetted twice with 1 catch for 3 yds in the Colts game). He was not moving well especially in latter periods of the game. It almost seems like he was used out there more as a decoy. The very end of July the beginning of TC, he slipped running a route and spent quite a bit of time in the medical blue tent......................he was not able to practice for ~3 weeks thereafter and missed the 1st preseason game and was hardly used later in the preseason. That injury's details was not reported (not required in TC). From what I was able to determine, it appeared to be an MCL. This is consistent with him never entirely having rehabbed the injury with progressive issues to date, leading to the IR.

Just saw he is out for season with a torn ACL 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
Let’s go Stover!!

That July injury appears to have been a small partial tear of the ACL. If you have a small partial ACL tear, you might not see much or any alarming symptoms at first. And while this sounds positive, the condition commonly will slowly worsen if the injury is not addressed properly and there is no discontinuance of activities (or early surgery usually the route taken for football players). If, for whatever reason, the decision is to try to treat a small partial tear with nonsurgical treatment, the rest/rehab period is closer to 8-10 weeks............not 3 weeks.

So assuming they had done the right thing, we could have potentially gotten him back week 5-7 had he been IR instead of Hinish? Now we got two games and done. That’s too bad, he was looking to have made some progress as a blocker in this offense.

Is there something in our water or air that makes our players more susceptible to injuries or something? I swear, every year we lose a bunch of folks.

We're probably up there as a year on year total, but I'm not sure.

I mean if you look around the league this week's Rams vs 49ers is basically a cripple fight. Both teams are extremely banged up.

The NFL reported that the total number of concussions suffered in preseason and regular-season practices and games was 219 in 2023, up from 213 in 2022..................certainly not a significant decrease considering rule changes that were going to change this significantly. And these numbers are no doubt significant undercounts, since of the reported concussions, 43 percent were self-reported by players.....................not exactly the most reliable source.

I've had to go to the Vikings official site to get their Injury Report. [They don't have the updated Texans Injury Report, which is dependent on the Texans reporting.

Did Ivan Pace get injured in practice? This will be a big loss for the Vikings defense. No Dallas Turner hurts their pass rush and no Jordan Addison allows the Texans to really sell out to stop Justin Jefferson.

Pace was injured in the last game.

That quad could still be a problem for Jefferson. Even a mild quad contusion which is what he suffered usually affects return for 2-3 week...........he sustained the injury only 5 days ago.

I’d say the Vikings are more banged up than the Texans. Especially when you consider guys like Mccarthy and Hockenson out.

Last 3 first round picks (two this year) all out in this game!

I have been able to discover the Texans Injury Status:

Mixon...................................doubtful.......................he will not play.

Patterson.............................questionable.............he isn't ready to play.

Pierce.....................................out

Stewart...................................questionable........................he isn't ready.

Scruggs...................................questionable........................he shouldn't play, but will.
I'm beginning to wonder what Chris Strausser has these guys doing in practice. The o-line seems to consistently pick up injuries and if I remember correctly he got run out of Indy when their o-line started picking up injuries and playing well below their standard.

We’re not anymore, or any less, banged up than any other team. Injuries always throw monkey wrenches into W-L predictions and playoff chances. And I hate to break it to you, but this season is just getting started.

The NFL is seeing increased injury numbers evolve. I don't have enough time to address something I have chronicled repeatedly over the years. The lesser the number and intensity of the practices before the season and during the season and post season especially with the increased number of games during a season have not prepared players for what they are exposed to in the course of a year. But they also appear to be masked by the evolution of the IR rules.

The NFL's injured reserve (IR) rules have changed over time, including:

  • 2012
Players were allowed to return from IR for the first time, but only if they were on the final 53-man preseason roster and were estimated to be out for at least six weeks.

  • 2017
The rule was changed to allow up to two players to return from IR after Week 8.

  • 2018
The rule was modified to allow players to return after their team played eight games, rather than after eight weeks.

  • 2020
The number of players that could return from IR increased to three per team.

  • 2022
The number of players that could return from IR increased to eight, and players were eligible to return after four games.

  • 2024
The rules were changed again to allow teams to return two players from IR in the postseason, in addition to the eight returns allowed during the regular season. Players can still only return from IR twice per season.

As the NFL changes rules said to protect players from injury.............they are mostly window dressing and have little affect on the overall injury numbers or their severity.

Doc you’ve really hit on something I have been contemplating for several years. It just seemed to me the fewer and lighter the practices.. and guys not playing much if at all during PS, the more injuries in regular season games. Yes…fewer injuries in preseason but many more during regular season game play. I don’t know if total injuries are up as a consequence. I also think the teams are much more ragged and the overall quality of play during the first 2-3 games has declined as a result.

This is one of those times when I think of the quote - the road to hell is paved with good intentions

I've only been heavily watching football since the 2010s so maybe your comment predates that as well but I always felt like the first few weeks were always a little sloppy and that was just a common thing across quite honestly all sports.

Been an NFL fan since roughly mid to late 70’s. It’s somewhat subjective but imho, the level of early season play was significantly better when camps were brutal with two tough practices many days, and most in full pads. Tacking was better, less sloppiness, fewer penalties…and it seems to me fewer soft tissue injuries like hammies.

I do realize guys these days stay in much better shape in the off-season, but there is good shape and then there is good football shape. What they do now amounts to going from driving bumper cars at six flags to getting in a regular car going 100 and purposely hitting other cars with no seat belt the next day.

Chris Myarick?
Never heard of this guy.

I'm kinda worried about the Texans only carrying 2 TE's on the active roster tomorrow. I'm kinda surprised Caserio didn't bring back Quitoriano and put him on the active roster, particularly with Schultz also being kind of banged up.

@CloakNNNdagger do you think Stingley could be having issues from the chronic nature of lis franc injuries due to the stress placed on it from a full preseason of use?

How does this look in retrospect? After the game? I wish you had been correct..
