Hurricane Ike

We have had some pretty good gusts of wind up here in Cypress. I have seen the lights flicker a couple of times. Reading all of your posts from down south and east of here makes me think we are not far behind y'all.

Stay safe everyone!

we have 3 very large windchimes hanging in trees in the backyard...it sounds like a symphony out there right now.

Windchimes scare the crap out of me when I hear them at night. During the day it's fine, but when they're blowing at night it freaks me out. Not sure why.

Ugh...

Any hopes for Galveston and communities along Galveston Bay to avoid a catastrophic storm surge may well be over.

The latest model runs offer those areas little comfort. Far from bringing Ike inland to the east of Galveston Island, both the HWRF and GFDL models bring the hurricane over the island's west end.

Although this won't produce a maximum surge over Galveston Island — that would require a strike closer to Freeport — a landfall on Galveston's west end should bring enough surge to likely overtop the city's seawall. I expect it to all but destroy most non-concrete structures not behind the seawall.

The storm surge at Galveston's Pier 21 has already reached 8.5 feet this evening, and we're still probably six hours from landfall, and nearly seven hours from high tide.

The storm surge will reach maximum levels, well above 20 feet most likely, along the coast of Galveston Bay. This will especially be the case on the west and north sides of the bay.

This landfall location also increases the likelihood of hurricane-force winds across more, if not most, of Harris County. I'll try to update the estimated storm surge and inland wind speeds later this evening.

I live 1400 miles away and my comcast is cutting out :(

Good luck everyone. If worse case scenario occurs, I may need someone to check on my family for me!

LOL, I'm doing the same thing. Also, got my freezer full of frozen water bottles. It's only 9:15, we've still got a long night ahead of us.

A sleepless one at that. I don't know how I'm going to sleep with wind howling all around me and rain pouring.

I only had 6 hours of sleep last night though so I just might fall over trying to stay up.

Alright, I'm tired of this hurricane already. Just hit and leave. I'm still waiting to hunker down because the bathroom is going to be a tight squeeze. I've got the cats caged and down there already and Oscar will not stop crying. And Kosmo won't stop hissing at him. Slightly annoying.

Until it starts getting bad, my cat is still wandering around. She's found her food and water in the bathroom and her litter box right outside the bathroom door. In fact, she's eating right now.

Still no rain here, just some light wind.

I hope she's OK. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it's lights out for me also.

She is ok now but scared but holding up she said it is only a matter of time for her electricity to go out. We are now texting instead of AIMing she does have a radio also...I will keep you posted as I hear updates.

I bet you're glad you got out of League City Andrew. I just moved up here to Tomball from League City a couple of months ago and it's looking like it was good timing.

My mom and her husband live in South Shore and are staying with us here. I hope your property in League City is as good as you left it.

I can entertain you now instead :photos:lol

LOL, I'll help. Right now my cat is sitting on a blanket stareing at me, meowing. Probably thinking cat thoughts like "What the hell is that ***** doing?"

edit to say, I forgot the word id!0t is censored here. LOL

I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose my back fence and at least one tree. Both are questionable structurally.

I have a huge old oak in front of my townhouse, but I'm fairly confident only limbs will snap off. But we have one of those oaks at the end of our block that's already leaning and I'm afraid we might lose it, and some power lines along with it.

they moved most everything out of one room where they think a large tree might fall....her grandson on the other hand is sending me texts "WHAAA HOOO" lol

the wind is picking up here, but no rain. I plan on staying up and posting as long as I have electricity. When the lights go out, I'm gonna lay down and snooze.

My husband just farted on the couch and our local high school team had a total of 59 yards the entire night that just got over...

The last strong windstorm whipped half the tree into my neighbors yard. He came over and was like "a branch fell in my yard" and was real nice about it. He wanted to borrow a chainsaw because his electric one wasn't doing the job. I go look and the top half of the tree was gone. We ended up cutting up about a pickup bed full of logs. Ever since it's kinda swaying a bit.

The fence has 3 posts that were broken pre-hurricane and it kinda sways a bit. It's definitely a gonner.

I'm waiting for Sharon Stone to announce that Texas 'deserves' this...

:gun:

I'm wondering if people in New Orleans are watching this, seeing how many people DIDN'T evacuate and shaking their heads. Apparently, stupidity is not limited to a geography.

She has a daughter and granddaughter that lives with her and her other daughter and grandchildren live across the street...they are the only two families left on her street staying :scarygirl:

That's just enough people for a fairly cut throat game of Monopoly.

I hope so too. My neighbor stayed and is keeping an eye on everything. I just hope that clear creek doesn't start flooding.
