Hurricane Ike

I feel really terrible about the crew stuck on that Cypriot freighter. Coast Guard is unable to rescue them and they're just going to have to stay in communication and ride it out - broken down about 90 miles SE of Galveston.

Probably a lot of people think the media overdramatizes, plus the Rita fiasco, plus just thinking a Cat 2 wouldn't be that bad.

NHC, however, is not prone to dramatization as far as know, and they've used the most extreme wording for this storm I have ever seen them use.

It is the water that kills and many have noted how much water this storm will bring. I think those still in Galveston may have grown a bit complacent and too much faith in the seawall. We will see, I guess.

Also, bearz.

28mph sustained 30 sec gust on my weather station, wind is a steady 14-20mph. Dunno how long my anemometer will hold up on the 14' PVC pipe mounted on the fence post...but its interesting to watch.

Sitting upstairs in a room with boarded up windows is freaky. It is pitch black with the lights out and the wind is already howling outside.
Unnerving sound and feeling.

What part of Houston are you in?

Don't let your guard down guys. I think they have this too far down the coast. I see landfall from Matagorda Bay to Galveston as a cat 2 or 3. Watch and see if they don't start inching the track up the coast slowly but surely over the next day or so.

Sometimes I hate being right. :gun:

This was posted when the NHC said it was going in south of Corpus.

Well, be careful guys. I'll be online here and there until the ole power grid takes a hike. We lost pwr for 5 days with Alicia. Who the hells knows this time.

God speed, I'll be thinking about all of you. Stay safe, and hang on tight. It's fixing to be a bit of a wild ride.

From Eric Berger's chat today on Chron.com...after some smart@ss made this comment...

2:15 [Comment From Ron]
I am in Dallas, should I leave?
2:16 Eric Berger: Yes. Your county commissioners think a black hole is a racist term. I'm not sure I'd want to be governed by them.

Oh how I yearn for the days of just caring about the pass rush and why VY is at a sausage party .

We had to evacuate and just discovered our host has wireless . Good luck to everyone and hope it's business as usual in a couple of days .

Brookshire. Its mellowed out again, was a renegade rainless squall I guess.
Most likely just a teaser of what is yet to come.

Right now, 5-15mph mostly from the North...but it is coming from all directions at times.
That eye is gynomous! Damn you Tina, get the F outta here!

I am thinking my old house in Katy likely won't make it...will be interesting to see on Sunday.

Unless your old house was a double wide, Katy should be fine. Katy is the biggest bunch of nail biters on the live chats with the SciGuy, followed Kingwood.

Hey everyone, guess what? I'm posting from my BATHROOM! LOL

Actually, it's the safest room in the apartment and my bathroom is long and rather large for an apartment. So, I'm moved my computer in here. I'll sleep on the couch cushions in here tonight. That is if I sleep at all.

Is it comfy? That's my plan for the evening, 'cept my bathroom is pretty dang small and I'll be sleeping in the tub. If I'm not sucking on my thumb, curled up in the fetal position and crying.

Southwest Houston...we are getting some big gust, no rain yet, I just heard the eye is almost at a standstill.

You may want to fill your tub with water. That way you can still flush your toilet, and if the water becomes unpotable you still have something to wash with/drink.

My bathroom is shaped like a very long rectangle, so I got my computer sitting on the counter by the sink. It's not the greatest situation in the world, but every other room in my apartment has windows, so I sure as hell ain't spending the night in them. I can't sleep in my bathtub because I filled it with water. If the water pressure dies, it's dang helpful if you have water to flush the toilet with.

The stupid cat is hiding now, I think she senses something is up. I moved her litter box into the hallway out of the room it was in, so I imagine shes starting to get freaked. That makes two of us.

I filled up a big laundry-basket sized container for just this purpose, so I'm good. If things go to **** in my area, I'll go out to stay with my dad in Katy. There's just not enough room in my bathroom for me, 2 cats and a bottle of gin.

You better go fetch her now because she'll be impossible to catch later. I'm going to start wrangling the cats in a couple hours. There is a high possibility I will get peed on by the fat, spastic one. I have their two carriers ready and waiting in the bathroom. I'll let them out once we're ready to stay in there for the night.

I'm in Pasadena, right off the ship channel, so I'm keeping a close eye on where this baby hits. Getting a little more than nervous too. Winds picking up, comcast cutting out occassionally. BUT so far, things are ok.
