This picture makes me laugh.

She seems so surprised by the wave. I mean WTF lady? Your on Galveston with a hurricane bearing down on the island...what did you think was going to happen?

Nothing about this storm makes sense. The pressure seems to have a mind of its own and the storm surge is bigger than the storm should make.

I think Ike is ***** slapping the laws of physics right now

The pressure is certainly dancing up and down a lot, but the movement of the pressure is having no impact on wind speed.

Surge is another issue altogether. Ike's size is a huge factor into the amount of surge being generated. The storm is literally moving all of the water in Gulf currently.

I think it's all going to turn out generally fine as far as Ike goes. It's sliding up the coast slowly and by tomorrow evening we'll be in a fairly good spot to (unfortunately for them) watch it bash the crap out of everything east of here to the border. We'll get rain and wind and some trees go down and some windows get broken but overall this is not going to be anywhere near as bad as it could have been (much like Rita).

You know, I'm really kind of hit or miss with the predicting the future thing.

Hurricanes are like Microsoft Windows, don't ever count on them to do what you need them to do.

....Also seeing shrimpers heading out on TV... I wonder what they are doing?

They're getting away from the coast. For them it's actually safer to be out at sea than to be in port during one of these (assuming it's not some unholy CAT5 monster of course). They're probably running down the coast to get away from the worst of it.

Good idea. My wife just went around the house earlier and did the same thing. She put them on her pen drive though.

I uploaded mine to my Kodak Gallery. It's a good idea for insurance purposes and they're safely away from all of this.

i like storms. i wanted to go post up in a parking garage somewhere near the coast, but the parents won't let me borrow their land cruiser.

Is it just me, or is anyone else having problems with wunderground's computer model link? StormPulse is working just fine.

Sorry about that Hoth. When I post the same pic I didn't see you had already posted it. I have been going from site to site in various windows. great minds....

Nothing like waiting until the afternoon before a hurricane to ask this, but I have a gas canister grill that's stored in the garage, tucked behind our cars. I don't anticipate failure of the garage door or any other part of our building structure, but are there any safety precautions I should be taking with that canister?

Stay safe, my TexansTalk friends!

Riding this out in Pasadena. Got a 36 pack of beer, a few bottles of liquor, and a handgun. This should turn out great.

Holy ****!

Galveston officials just announced that over 40 per cent of the city's population remained on the island.

Going to be a lot of death.

Going to be a lot of death.

The guys on CBS said this is around 24,000 people. The death count could be truly catastrophic if this is true and Ike wipes out Galveston, as is expected because of the surge.

CNN is reporting that the Coast Guard has grounded all air operations.

Not good. I just read this on abc13

Petty Officer Patrick Kelley said at least 150 people were reportedly trapped. Four helicopters were sent to rescue the residents. So far, the Coast Guard has rescued 65 people.
Bolivar Peninsula resident Audina Umbricht told Eyewitness News that she planned to evacuate when she woke up this morning, but got up too late and realized the water had already gotten too high. At that point, her husband started calling the Coast Guard for help.
