I hope he doesn't go so far as try to prove a point.
Agreed. I'll trust his judgment for now. He may have a successful 2015 season to follow up a very impressive 9-7 record as a rookie head coach. Like I said, I believe Bill O'Brien is the best head coach in the AFC South and one of the best around the entire league. At the end of the day he's an expert at what he does and I have to believe he can take these quarterbacks on the current roster and find a way to elevate their game.
I just believe if we had an elite quarterback, or just a very good quarterback (top 10 to 15 ranked around the league), Bill O'Brien's job would be much easier and we'd become a Super Bowl contender. He wouldn't have to sit there watching game film and feeling dismayed that Ryan Mallett just threw another interception with no pass rush. It was just a horrible decision when he had a lot of time to throw. He just threw it right into the cornerbacks hands.
Bob McNair is right. We don't need a superhero at the quarterback position. But we better have somebody who's more than respectable and closer to being good. We'll know a lot more about the Texans after this 2015 season comes to an end.
But you said it man. Let's hope he isn't blinded by being stubborn and trying to prove a point. If we have to enter the 2016 NFL draft knowing very well what our needs our then let's focus on that. I'm tired of entering each season with the same problems. Yeah, Matt Schaub had a few good seasons here (led the league in passing, Pro Bowl MVP, etc... etc...) to give us some false hope that we had finally found a franchise quarterback but it was short lived at best.
I want a good quarterback, doesn't have to be elite (but top 15) who can be here for seven, eight, nine, ten years, that I can learn to follow and admire. Sort of like the Warren Moon days to some degree. Even Steve McNair, who unfortunately, passed away too young but also he was taken away from the city of Houston as an Oiler. He'd have been perfect for this city his entire career. Would have led the Oilers to a Super Bowl. Not the evil Tennessee Titans.
But I want a franchise quarterback!!!!! They're out there we just fail to land them by making the wrong draft decisions or not pouncing on the opportunities when they become available in free agency. Which is rare (elite QBs rarely hit the free agent market) but Peyton Manning certainly did and he had interest in playing here for Gary Kubiak. Funny how the two hook up now a days but at the time Peyton wasn't a good fit for Kubiak's system. Rightttttttt... As Austin Powers, or scratch that, Dr. Evil would say.
What sucks is that the Houston Texans could very easily have won a Super Bowl or two by now. But we wonder why we are entering every season with a lot of false hope with no real chance to win a Super Bowl ring. The brutal truth hurts me but it must be said. This is the absolute truth.
