David Johnson... welcome to houston

Thanks guys. Seeing Hyde and Duke in pass-pro made me appreciate Lamar Miller more.

The acquisition of DJ makes me wonder... why the hell did we spend a 3rd round pick on Duke?

take the move in the context of when it happened. Miller went down in the 3rd preseason game. There’s not a lot of options out there at that point in the game so Hyde was brought in. But pass catching isn’t Hyde’s game and you’re limited if you have to depend on him to get that aspect of your offense going. Pass catching is Dukes strength and you needed that aspect with your RB’s to at least keep the defense honest. Neither guy is a 3 down back and you’re tipping your plays when you sub Duke in on 3rd and long situations.

with David Johnson, you‘ve got a legit 3 down guy and pass catching threat. you’re also not tipping what you’re going to do In those 3rd and long situations whether u leave him in or you sub Duke in.

You would need to convince me with a better argument than 1 Senior Bowl game. All reports I read were based on his entire college career, not one game where he knew tons of scouts would be watching him.

His pro career speaks for itself

Aug 8 - Duke was acquired for a 3rd round pick
Aug 25 - Lamar Miller tore his ACL
Aug 31 - Carlos Hyde was acquired

What do you think BOB was envisioning with a Duke & Lamar backfield... that warrants spending a 3rd round pick on Duke?

a more viable pass catching back out of the backfield..another weapon period.

More so the system he was being used in on the Cardinals than just Johnson himself. He had a noticeable drop off in production and talent in 2018 and became completely irrelevant in 2019 with Kyler Murray at QB.

2018, Got hurt- Broken Wrist
2019, Fell out of favor with new regime.

Worse than last year? I hope not.
Yes, much worse than last year. We had Hyde last year. He was a 2-down back, which freed up tons of plays for Duke on 3rd. David Johnson can play all 3 downs, which will leave Duke with even less usage. Not ideal, but the most likely scenario.

Kelly will probably use Duke like he was used last year, to spell DJ every 3 Rd or 4rh series. With a little less 3rd down work than last year.

Right. I thought he was underused last year, considering they gave up a 3rd for him.

I dont value usage with the draft pick used to trade for a guy.

But yes, BOB overpaid for Duke.

I value things like the big play Duke made to help win the Buffalo game.

Also, like I was saying, when they gave up a 3rd rounder for Duke, Carlos Hyde was not even in the fold yet.... if they knew Hyde was going to be a factor, I doubt the priority would have been there to give up so much for Duke.

When they traded for Duke, Miller was still in the mix. I think it would have pretty much been the same.
Yes, but they knew what they were getting from Miller. We signed Hyde as a desperation play with no other options available, and he turned out to be much better than expected.

Last year we used plenty of 2 back sets with Hyde & Duke. I don't see why we can't do the same with D & D. Both can run, both can catch & not knowing which is staying in for protection should help us catch pass rushers off guard.

We've got some tools for a dynamic offense. But that's been the case for a while.

We traded for Hyde as soon as Miller was ruled out. We brought him in to replace Miller's thousand yard season.

Duke was brought in because our new RBs were headed to the practice squad & special teams. BO'b gave up a third believing he was going to backup Miller.

Maybe. Maybe he knew Miller wasn't going to be with the team in 2020. Maybe he was going to be a surprise cut for the 2019 season. But... it looked like he brought Duke in to backup Miller.

My point was, I am sure they planned to use Duke more often before Hyde exploded. No one expected the production out of Hyde. Had Hyde turned out as expected, Miller would have been used more.

Not to be that guy, but they traded for Hyde.

They wanted a 3rd down RB and got one of the best in the NFL in Duke.

Did they use him correctly? Nope, I would've liked to see more usage of Duke in the slot instead of Coutee/Carter when Hyde was playing RB.

I still would like to see this again this yr. Duke can be a real differencmaker in the slot, get the ball in his hands and good things will happen. This is also a way for Duke to get the touches we all want him to get.

It's just going to take more consistency from the QB position to unlock that dynamic offense.

Agreed on all of this but like I say, I don’t think they expected Hyde to be so productive last year.

It takes consistency from everybody, not just Watson.

The QB is the straw that stirs the drink. If he doesn't play well (Like in the last month of the season when the team somehow carried the team to 3 wins despite his poor play) then the team is screwed.

Tell me in the last month of the season who on the offense didn't perform atleast close to league avg?

The entire team played like crap during the last month. You’re too focused on Watson to the point of ignoring all the other facet to a good team. Why?

Hey Earl unlike this post if you like.

But it's still true.

10 great games from your QB and 7 below avg games from your QB isn't a way to win a championship. Unlike this post to if you like but this is the hard to accept truth. You would've thought you would've learned something from Moon's uneven play.

They in spite of coaching and you know this. Watson helped win most of those games. He made plays when they needed him to. But of course you will not acknowledge that.

Truth of the matter is Watson can't do it all by himself. He needs an avg to better than avg defense and/or run game to help him out.

Basically we're all saying the same thing, some people just live for controversy.

Yep, he made a couple of plays to bail out his subpar play

The only reason they won the Tampa game for instance is that Jamieus sucked worse than DW4 did. That game wasn't on BOB. I really can't figure out how they won that game.

I mean use DUKE more. Not Miller.

Duke is a good WR and just an ok runner of the ball. Certainly wasn’t a more punishing runner than Hyde & he’s not a better WR option than any of the WR’s. So I’m curious as to where folks thought more touches for Duke was gonna come from. We would’ve had to take targets away from guys who specialize in catching the ball. Most times We had 4 other better and legit options than Duke. Nuk, Fuller (played 11 games), Stills and Fells. Based on all of these guys’ production, I wouldn’t have taken targets away from them to go to Duke. This year could be different..but it’s most likely going to be the same if David Johnson can stay healthy.

Really? This offense/Watson needs weapons badly. Compare what we have to KC. No real threat at RB. No real threat at TE. A bunch of meh number twos and threes at best. All this talk about defense in the draft is crazy. We need explosive play makers around Watson badly!

I agree they need one more real fast guy on their WR corps. A guy like Riggs or Reagor. Hopefully Warring can be the TE you're looking for.

Williams is OK but nothing great at RB. If healthy, while playing for his career DJ can bounce back into all pro form.

OB is evidently under the impression Cobb can replace Hopkins and Johnson can replace Hyde.....otherwise he wouldn't have made the trades he did. Unless he's an idiot!!!! Focus the draft on the trenches and let OB enjoy his off season handy-work.
