College Football Random Thought of the Day

South Dakota State played 15 games last year in winning the FCS Championship. The FCS playoffs are a 24 team field. Never have heard a complaint from any FCS team.

I understand but how many first round draft picks are playing in the FCS playoffs?

I question, for example, the wisdom of Marvin Harrison Jr. even playing this season, let alone playoffs. He's a lick to be a top-5 pick. Why risk a career-ending injury and millions in compensation?

It's one of the first things, as an adult, you should learn.....how to honor an agreement. Student athletes should honor the agreement and opportunity they were given. An education and to play football. Players should be expected to earn their degree before departing the school for professional football.....otherwise, someone is taking advantage of the other.

Is Marvin Harris Jr playing on a scholarship?

He shouldn't be. I mean I know how the system works. But they got to do something... with NIL money they should just pay him to play. Let him pay for his "education" & give that scholarship to someone who needs it. Just thinking out loud. But really, the NIL money changes things.

The top shelf players should always put their best interests first. But, you also see some 3rd day and UDFA bypassing the bowl games. They need that tape against the better competition more than protecting themselves from the 0.01% chance at a catastrophic injury.

So now Klubnik is better than Stroud? Just can't let it go. Sad.

Like I said, all of this rebuild will come down to how good Stroud really is. Y'all already know my thoughts. I've watched Klubnikin high school and he's special. IMHO

He did outplay the great Drake Maye in the ACC Championship. Of course, Maye has yet to prove he can perform against a top program.
If they only had the talent around them that Stroud had, then we could have an apples to apples comparison.

This is all about projection.

If Ohio State had Clemson's defense last year it's quite possible that Stroud would have that national championship ring that you relish.
If Stroud hadn't choked in the 4th quarter your Buckeyes would likely have another ring. A 51 ydfg isn't a gimme for a college kicker?

LOL at you telling a rabid Buckeye fan what happened in the Georgia playoff game.
Choking is choking, I don't have to tell him anything, it's there for all to see. Some like you just don't want to admit it.

Our defense choked. We had a 14-point lead going into the 4th quarter and lost by 1. CJ had 4 TD passes to ZERO turnovers against the #1 defense in college football. I sense that your need to be right is greater than your love for the Texans. By all accounts, CJ is a good kid who's overcome a LOT to be where he is. He could have gone the way of the streets as countless other poor black kids do but he didn't. He stood tough, stayed clean, became a devoted Christian, and found great success! Regardless of what CJ does the rest of the way, you gotta give him credit for what he's accomplished. You have a negative fixation with CJ that is difficult to understand.

Anyone remember the song My Sharona?
I'm writing one called My Mulugheta!

Same music and lyrics, hope it sells as well as did the one for The Knack.

Dang! Caught in my mind gate now.

I give him credit for getting out of poverty. I'm always skeptical of playing the Christian card, the Texans last QB got baptized in the River Jordan in between the times he was molesting women.

Truth is he played great for 3 qtrs and not so well in the 4th.

You're wrong.

I decided to rewatch the 4th quarter and, actually, Stroud played great! You may not be aware, but Marvin Harrison ws knocked out of the game at nearly the 3nd of the 3rd quarter on an ILLEGAL hit that was called targeting on the field but was then overruled by the blind (or dishonest) replay official. Ohio State's good tight-end was knocked out of the game in the first half. Ohio State was also playing with their 3rd and 4th string running backs. And, not to mention, Jaxon Smith-Njigba was also OUT of the game.

Here is a breakdown that I put together of Ohio State's 4th quarter offensive numbers.

1st possession:

1st RB 2-yard rush
2nd Stroud incomplete pass
Stroud under pressure rushes for 6 yards.
Punt

2nd possession

1st 9 yard pass completion
2nd rush for 12 yards

1st Stroud rolls right and rushes for 4 yards
Stroud drops back, is pressured, and runs for 18 yards

1st RB runs for 1 yard
2nd screen pass completed for no gain
3rd Stroud completes pass for 10 yard gain and a 1st down

1st Stroud designed run for 5 yards
2nd Stroud sacked for 12 yard loss
3rd Stroud incomplete pass
4th Field Goal from 46 yards

3rd Possession
1st Stroud drops back, scrambles for 5 yards
2nd Stroud pass completed 14 yard gain & first down

1st Stroud drops back and then scrambles for 29-yard-gain to Georgia 30. 24 seconds remain in game, Ohio State down 1, 2 remaining timeouts.

1st OSU rush for 1-yard loss
2nd Incomplete (dropped) pass
3rd Stroud under pressure on 3rd and 11 scambles and throws ball out of bounds.
4th 8 seconds remaining, Ohio State kicker badly misses 50 yard FG try
Game over

If the usually reliable kicker had made that field goal, Stroud would likely have a national championship ring and then you'd be happy to have him, right?

Here is a link to the game. Go to 2:12:05 in the video to watch Ohio State's first offensive possession (and subsequent possessions in the 4th quarter).

Here's the infamous headshot by Georgia against Marvin Harrison Jr. that was called "targeting" on the field and, incredibly, was overruled by the Pac12 replay official. The targeting rule prohibits leading with the helmet to the head and neck area of a player. If you go to 1:12 of the video, you can CLEARLY see that the defender's helmet viciously hit MHJ's helmet, momentarily knocking him unconscious.

Had the call on the field stood, it would have been 1st and 10 and for Ohio State at the Georgia 2-yard-line. Instead, Ohio State kicked a 48-yard field goal to end the 3rd quarter. MHJ was not permitted to return to the game due to concussion protocol while Georgia's safety was able to remain in the game. Ohio State got SCREWED.

That was a 100% headshot. There was no break through the point of contact. Guy should’ve been kicked out of the game. That was a blown call.

I watched the entire 4th Qtr instead. Stroud wasn’t even close to being the reason Ohio State lost this game.

Ohio State OL wasn’t picking up the blitz in the 4th quarter. There were 3 plays where the blitzing players came around untouched and into the pocket. The last series in particular, Stroud got zero time and only had 2 receivers downfield with 4 DB’s covering leaving CJ with no options. I put that on the play calling. As for Ruggles, he didn’t miss or slightly miss his opportunity to win the game…..he ducking shanked the living shite out of that attempt. If anyone nutted up under the pressure…it was Ruggles.

The Ohio State defense didn’t do the team any favors in the 4th b/c Bennett and his WR were gifted a pitch and catch opportunity due to the Buckeyes blown coverage. Also, the DB’s got abused in the 4th quarter. As much as Ruggles choked….the defense played the biggest part in the loss.

Texian and I have already discussed this earlier. The throw left Harrison hanging out to dry and the hit was correctly overturned after replay.

You and Texian watched that replay with some severely slanted eyes. Stroud launched that ball with 3 defenders bearing down on him versus taking the sack. Harrison had the potential for a play on the ball, but #22 came full steam, absolutely never looked for the ball, put his helmet down and put the crown of his helmet squarely into Harrison’s helmet. That was Targeting 101…..almost made wonder if Sean Peyton, Greg Williams, or Buddy Ryan were Georgia’s DC.

Maybe you can go back and look at the screen shots Texian put up.

This is the year where a team like Texas or USC could break through, reach the playoffs, and maybe win it all. Georgia, Bama, OSU, are all replacing their QB's. Look out IF Texas wins at Bama! Although I'm not sold on Steve Sarkisian, he has a great opportunity to prove his doubters wrong. If Texas can't win the Big12 this season, it's probably time to start looking for another coach.

They made them so you would buy them. Will it work?

Just my guesswork, but I think they made them for recruiting purposes.

Certainly hoping people will buy them, but mostly to keep up with the joneses in attracted 5 stars.

Colorado is coming back to the Big 12. That brings the total number of schools in the conference to 13; place your bets on who's going to be number 14.

I could see Nebraska making a move to return to the new BIG 14. I'd like to see them make a move for (2) more schools so the conference name could the BIG 16.

With Texas and Oklahoma set to join the SEC....I wouldn't hesitate in pursuing Arkansas and Kentucky or Missouri. These (3) teams probably won't have much of chance of ever winning anything within the SEC. Money is one thing, but winning sure helps bring in the money and recruits.

BIG 16:

SOUTH
TCU
Baylor
Houston
Texas Tech

NORTH
Nebraska
Kansas
Kansas State
Arkansas

WEST
BYU
Colorado
Nebraska
Iowa State

EAST
Cincinnati
West Virginia
Kentucky -or- Missouri
Central Florida

Nebraska isn't walking away from the B1G. They would be walking away from tens of millions in sports revenue and potentially HUNDREDS of millions in research grants through the B1G. Sports revenue in the B1G is a literal drop in the bucket compared to the revenue they receive for research.

On a side note....they survived financially, for all those years in the BIG 12 b/c they were a dominant football school. Enter perennial losing and suddenly they have to rely on new revenue streams. They will never compete in the BIG 10, just like Arkansas, Kentucky, and Missouri will watch any opportunities of success in the SEC flicker out with the arrival of Texas and Oklahoma. Nothing like becoming a conference doormat. When a school is winning and/or winning big.....a lot entities, and their money, would like to have their name associated with the school.

Unfortunately for Nebraska, they made a lot of bad coaching hires. Bo Pelini was at least decent but they fired him too and haven't sniffed a winning season since. They need Warren Buffet to open the wallet and start buying players.

On another note one of my friends is a huge, life-long, Florida State fan. I just texted him and said "Sorry about Jordan Travis. Stairs are indeed dangerous for all ages!".

Of course, I have heard nothing whatsoever but I'm just messing with him!

With Pac-12 in trouble, could be any number of teams from that conference. Utah? AZ? AZ state?

Not sure I'm surprised about it, but I'm kind of impressed how well the B12 handled TX/OU departure. I thought for sure they were the conference that would implode.
