All encompassing 2023 Draft thoughts thread.

Durham is far more polished and demonstrated as much @ the Senior Bowl. He should go off the boards two rounds earlier. If Texans pass on tier one & two he leads the pack tier three and will get drafted in 4th rd just like Schultz did.

I was hoping his poor athletic testing (in comparison to Schultz) would drop him. But more likely scenario is you being right.

We have 6 picks inside the top 105.
That right there should net us a nice group.
Sure some may miss, but if half hit, that will be a big boost to the team.
Rome wasn't rebuilt in a day.
Correctomundo, any position after round 5 I'd probably be good with.

If you're the Texans FO, you take your QB at #2.
So now at #12, if Jalen Carter is there, do you take a chance on him?
If I'm DR, I'm thinking I can get into his head and mold him. That, and you think the older guys on the team can be a good influence on him.

Before he showed up fat and out of shape at his pro day I might have agreed. But now he is off my board

Same...with the caveat that if he falls out of the first round, he might be worth a moon shot at 33. It's still a valuable pick, but it's not the absolute end of the world if he bombs out and his upside is massive. I just doubt he reaches it...but again could be worth the gamble there. And if he is there at 33 and the Texans pass, I wouldn't be upset either.

TCU's Quentin Johnston runs 4.49 & 4.50 at pro day. Had 40.5" vertical and 11'2" broad at combine.

At least from that angle, Johnston seems to be running easy. On his longer breakaway runs, he comes off as 4.45 if not lower. Much more concerned with his pure WR skills: route running and consistent catching with his hands

Maybe someone who has watched more football than me can help me out here- why isn't Cedric Tillman getting more buzz (particularly here on this board)? I only watched a handful of Tennessee games over the last couple years, but he stood out to me. I don't think he's bound for stardom or anything, but I feel pretty strongly that he'll be a good pro. He's big- and more importantly, he plays big. He's got strong hands and good body control/coordination.

I like him more than Hyatt, though it looks like I'm in the minority there.

Tillman will definitely play in the league. Everything you said is right...big, good hands. He tested well at the combine. But I don't see any suddenness in games. Not much run after catch. Not a lot of juice. One thing that kinda turned me off is how Tillman half arses it when the ball's not coming his way. I don't think that will go over well in the league. Reminds me of Bryan Edwards from a few years ago. Is he still in the league?

Who knows what this kid is really like, you know from a moral standpoint ? And I read where somebody said he might have still been very truamatized by the whole afair, especially with the loss of his friends including a teammate.
I dunno ever drive around boozed-up and do foolish things when you were young ?
Well if you did you probaly had nothing bad happen to you, you know really bad.
When I was a very young man, long, long time ago I almost was responsible for a tragety because I was driving around drunk.
My younger brother had just beent discharged from the Navy and he, a friend of his, and myself were out driving around, bar hopping, celebrating.
Anyway I pulled into a filling station which had a really good cafe, you know we were ready to have some ham, eggs, and hashbrowns and call it a night.
So when I pulled into the filling station, crap-faced drunk, I hit a car up on a jack with a guy working under the car - he could have been killed but he didn't suffer a scratch. Th guy just laughed it off, an said NP ! Wow !
But obviously Carter and his friends had no such luck the night of their tragic accident.

No, I have never driven drunk. I have never raced anyone, let alone at double the speed limit.

These things are not youthful indiscretions, they are crimes that show an incredible lack of judgment and a lack of basic, decent, human regard for those around you (general 'you').

I agree with you. I like him over Hyatt. I think he’s be a great day 2 addition.
I think I hurt has played a role in his decreased buzz. He had an ankle injury earlier in the season where he had to sit out games.

I guess since we are talking about Hyatt- what really separates him from Tyler Scott of Cincy? I'm from SW Ohio. I went to OSU, but a lot of my buddies went to UC, so I end up catching a decent amount of UC games, and he and Hyatt seem very similar. Both guys play faster than they tested (or, rather, they play as fast as they test, while most others test faster than they play) and have similar size limitations (Hyatt being a bit longer, Scott a bit thicker).

If anything, Scott looks more dangerous with the ball in his hands (I believe he was a running back in HS- at least, it looks like it).

They have Tillman already, his name is Nico Collins.

I would not have drafted you at that age after that event and pay you millions of dollars.

Most of us have done stupid things at a young age but I would doubt If they were done weeks before an event such as draft.

Consequences.

True but they had just won the national championship and Carter is like only 21 or 22, 4 or 5 years younger than myself at the time
of my episode which is why I would cut him more slack than what you are willing to do.
Initially I also was less tolerant, but I think now I'd like to learn more about him before taking him off of my Board.
It's gonna be interesting to see how soon Carter is drafted which is why this is a moot dicussion because IMO no way does he make to #12.

How many other players that show up for a scheduled practice that they've known about for 2 months so out of shape they can't finish the practice do you want to get to know better?

My guess was that the reason he didn't finish his Pro-Day session was more mental than physical.
He was probably totally screwed up in the head because of his recent experience.

You didn't watch the pro day nor read any of the reports?

As it stands right now, I think Texans will take BY.
I have a sneaking suspicion that if Jalen Carter is on the board at #12, he could be our pick there.
Texans will gamble that he will get his head back in the game.
If he does, we could have 2 premier players to add to our roster.
That would be nice.

That’s kinda like- aww size doesn’t matter, take BY at 2. Then at 12 heck size is all that matters, gotta take Carter, lol.

Before his misdemeanors, Jalen Carter was consistently in the top 3 in this draft.
He will get his head back in the game and when he does, we should have a disruptive force to be reckoned with on our DLine.
And Young is the best QB in this draft.
Who wouldn't want that?

I actually would prefer Tyler Scott over Hyatt as well. I like his speed and route running ability. I think his value in late day 2 is better IMHO. I just don’t want to spend a day 1 or early day 2 on him. I actually like JSN or Addison (late round) on day 1. For early day 2 I’d go with an edge rusher like
Felix Anudike-Uzomah, iOL, or maybe TE with our 2nd rounder.

I don't see Carter making it to 12 - isn't Philly picking at 10 so if he's not gone before that then Carters an Eagle IMO.

I’m struggling right now to think of players who were complete head cases with laziness traits that turned their life around once on professional sports team. I’m sure there are many examples, I mean their has got to be right

I think I want Bijan or a DL/Edge at 12. The drop off in DL is much greater in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th than the drop off in WR.

If Scott is available at 65 he’s a great value selection. Marvin Mims is another player I like in 3-4 range, but Scott higher by a tick. And of course Mingo is my favorite but he does not have that field stretching skillset of the other two. More of a Deebo prospect, which imo is a great type of prospect to have on your team.

The first round WR prospects are not very far ahead of tier two imo. There is a significant amount of similarly rated WRs this year.

If the team is going Young at 2, i’m not as concerned with acquiring that vertical WR. I think Young can get by without that deep threat for his rookie season. The other QB prospects that don’t have Young’s advanced processing ability will need that help to reduce the rookie season growing pains.

Something to accomplish next offseason to take the offense to the next level.

This is a solid mock - no trades, so likely not the way it pans out but very sensible. Levis to the BUCS looks very likely.
What if someone wants to jump Indy for Richardson? Say Atlanta to 2 and Commanders to 3? Colts think ok Stroud to Panthers and Atlanta gets AR 15 at 1.2 then Washington takes Young at 3. Do we really want Levis?

When we could get ...

Rosenhaus trying to prevent a free fall. Don’t want every team getting to interview this guy and dropping him on their board.

I believe 4 of the top 10 picks will be QB - Panther, Texans, Colts, Falcons. That leaves only 6 target teams that he would agree to talk with, based on current draft position. He must be such a bad interview, they want to limit the number of interviews. He has the talent to be exceptional, but if I were a GM or owner there is no way I would draft him - he continues to make questionable choices.

What is resoning for Pittsburgh to trade out from #17 when they need CB and a top 10 corner like Witherspoon falls in their laps?
They take OT Broderick Jones. Why do the Texans take Witherspoon when they could take Quentin Johnston or Bijan Robinson?
