Thanks for reminding us about Scarlett. Yea he made some plays in his rookie year so he would probably be the guy to replace Simon.Maybe they project Scarlett to replace Simon. He was impressive in flashes last year.

Alot of guys getting signed to reasonable deals among all the crazy deals. Why aren't the Texans more involved?
They probably have to reformulate their plan since Jerrah pulled the rug from under them.
Mancz and Martin have both played guard in the past. I expect one of them to compete for a starting spot at OG while the other takes center. No need to address the position. We've got bigger stuff to worry about imo.
With the loss of Demps, Bouye, and now Simon the Texans should get some Compensatory picks next year, especially if they don't sign any FA's. Anyway, it might lessen the "sting" of losing that 2nd rounder next year that was part of the Osweiler trade!
deleteAny news on free agents we're linked to thus far? I've only heard Remmers and he signed with Minnesota.
And one trying to come back from cancer. That would be a Cinderella story, but far from likely and the Texans could really use the help on the OL.We had 14 free agents. We resigned 2 & lost 4. That leaves us with 8 more available with 1 considering retirement.

I'm seeing a Patriots/Steelers view of FA. Yes, NE has been active this year in FA, but historically, they've been quite quiet in FA under Belichick. I love the way the Steelers and Patriots handle their respective business and don't mind the Texans copying it.Signing Griffin fills one need. Now only need to add a late round/udfa for competition. I like the Fido/Griffin combo at TE.

I agree. Belichick is, again, ahead of the curve. Greatest coach/gm ever. One reason why New England is more active on the first weekend, IMO, is the unique free agency climate this year. Because the cap has grown so much the past 2 years, combined with the rules rolling unused cap space into the following year's cap, there is a ton of cap space relative to the depth and talent in the free agent market. Simply put, unlike many previous years, teams aren't going to be cap-strapped heading into the second week of free agency. Therefore, teams won't be able to find value simply because organizations are unable to bid on players they would otherwise have interest in.
I am somewhat concerned that we may miss the window to sure up our offensive line, in particular... I am holding out hope for Lang or getting lucky with the health of Clady or Vollmer.
Not really liking keeping griffin, so many good TEs in this class who can be impact players, Griffin clearly isn't too much better than replacement player, hoping this doesn't keep them from drafting a TE who can become something.

They know what they have in Griffin. He's established in the system. Signing him does not preclude them adding in the draft, but with Anderson (if they feel he has a future) it is not likely. Perhaps they have a plan in place.
Also, a rookie stepping in and learning the system well enough to have the same comfort level is unlikely
It's not about next year only, it's about the team going forward beyond just 2017. Impact players are hard to find and they usually cost a high draft pick. This year in a loaded TE class you can find guys much later, it's prudent to take the opportunities when their given.

So we signed Griffin, Lechler, Novak.
Lost Simon, Demps, Jones...
Who am I missing??
Perhaps so. They must have a different priority assigned
Mismatches at the TE position can take an offense to the next level, when Hernandez, Gronk, Kelce, J Graham, Gates etc were playing to their level they were nearly impossible to cover in the red zone. A part of the field the Texans struggled mightily last year. Those guys were seam busters who provided explosive plays something also missing from this offense. Griffin is none of those things, why settle for this when two huge aspects of the offense can be improved with a third round pick? I hope this doesn't keep them from still making a move.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/8600/ryan-griffinTexans re-signed TE Ryan Griffin to a three-year, $9 million contract with $3.25 million guaranteed.
Griffin was linked to Detroit, but otherwise didn't draw much free-agent interest. He'll return as the No. 2 tight end behind C.J. Fiedorowicz. With Brock Osweiler gone, Griffin is unlikely to repeat the 74 targets he saw in 2016. Mar 11 - 6:31 PM
yeah pro bowl TE's make a difference... so does a QB. Struggling mightily is what the entire offense did last year. TE was one of the few brighter spots
The TE's in this offense...
Man are we going to sign ANY FA's? I can't even find any rumors of guys we are interested in.

Cap isn't just about players. The cap room they have now gives them a great deal of flexibility. Obviously if they get Romo it will burn most of it. But say they don't, Hopkins, the rookies, etc. can be signed with more money in roster instead of signing bonus. That leaves the cap more open in the future and lessons dead money ramifications.
Sure, they could do that with Hopkins, but at the expense of a 2nd round pick? You really think that's smart?
Plus, at their current rate of signing players, they could have done that without the trade.
I think it's pretty clear Romo is a target and is why the move was made. Just saying the space isn't useless if that falls thru. A little patience is in order on Romo. Can't go spend it all while waiting. The Cowboys will blink eventually.
I'm not sure there will be anybody worthy to spend it on if they continue to wait.
Take a look at the remaining free agents.
Not really. He similar to McKinney. We need someone who can cover TEs. Give me Zack brown and move cushing outside and we'd better off IMO.How well would Donta Hightower fit with our D? Money even feasible? Just saw his name as still available and thought he could help.
This....plus it's looking like we'll be shoring up our OL in the draft - and we added a valuable 4th round selection.Cap isn't just about players. Man our division has added some serious talent. We better nail the draft.Really, look what Ricky has done during FA compared to the rest of the division. It's like Ricky is setting up BOB for failure.
It looks like we lost another player. He's not a starter, but he was a pretty good special teams player. That makes 4 players lost & zero signed. I guess we're loading up on comp picks for next year. http://prod.www.49ers.clubs.nfl.com...on-Jones/a11acc8d-4155-4a1a-ab1a-1de2e70ddb3a
