Texans Offensive Line

LT Tunsil
LG Jones
C Patterson
RG Mason
RT Fant

Lets see what they got the first four weeks! Then hopefully get Howard back at RT. Depending on Patterson’s performance maybe he forces a competition with Scruggs for the center job?
If Patterson does well then Scruggs will fit in very nicely at LG. Though Patterson played better at LG than C at Notre Dame. IMHO

Why? Why would you move Scruggs from C when thats his natural position and not play Patterson at LG when you obviously see that he's a better LG than a C....why would you play 2 players out of position vs just giving Scruggs his position back after coming back from injury??? He obviously earned the starting nod over him but unfortunately got injured....makes no sense.

All of this depends on how Patterson does at C. If he plays well and there's no communication issues you keep him at C. Scruggs was playing guard when Q went down. Most Centers start out at OG in the NFL.

Teams coaching plans have to be open to change to deal with injuries. It takes at least three years (Green still has hope) for players to develop, overcome injuries and fit in new system with players constantly in flux. This was a better than average year to address center via the draft and Texans pulled two. Know I’m going to sound like a broken record, but a tackle even if it’s a swing is a must. Another OG later always smart, value play, you just have to be consistent and invest in your OL. Texans appear snakebite with injuries, really nothing more than they’re doing to bridge the talent and depth gap now. Future looks much brighter to me!

I changed and tried all 3 styles and no bueno. I can see it if I look at latest activity. I'm even watching the thread, but it doesn't show in my watched threads list

We spend tons of draft picks, trades, and free agency signings and can't field a decent O-line. It's been like that for a while. It's like a team virus or something. Or the burial grounds.

I think we have some this year as in Patterson. Injuries as with Suggs and Tytus not uncommon. I want to see evals of Shaq Mason and Patterson. Fant fulfilled my expectations.

There were several miscues by the Texans OL when the Ravens sent a blitz leaving a defender unblocked and Stroud running for his life. Not unexpected given the lack of time the OL has spent together. I expect Mason to be a plus starter at guard when we take the season as a whole.
Yeah it's definitely early days and that tweet left out his run blocking grade which is Mason's best skill anyway.

I think most of that comes down to a rookie being at C and having a tough time picking up blitzes and also picking up who is even rushing. Ravens often lined up 5 or 6 on the line but only rushed 4 leaving the o-line guessing who to block. Not only that but it's already been said that we need to get play calls in quicker and more efficiently because the o-line barely had enough time to look at what was happening in front of them pre-snap in the first place.

I highly doubt Shaq Mason continues to be poor especially when we get the actual starters playing alongside him. Right now he's sandwiched between two people that wouldn't be playing if we had a healthy team.

Talk to Aaron Rodgers about his OT play that ended his season after four snaps. Doubt they can find an upgrade either. This is why Texans had to pay both Tunsil & Howard. At least they get Howard back in three more games.

JP wasn't great but I don't think he was much of a detriment to Mason.

He was getting worked. This is looking another former patriot who Caserio knows who can't play and he gave him an extension. Shaq has his worse grade of his career since his rookie year. Who get rookie year grades in year 10?
Delete.
Edit: Mason's play was huge surprise to me.

They've got Shaq Mason graded out as not great (38/65) and Josh Jones as worse (54/65). But they've got Fant rated 21/65 and Tunsil at 37/65.

I was shocked to see 2 of the top 4 corners being Texans, though. Thomas and Nelson. Stingley was down at 65/92.

Patterson calls the protections and can put everyone in good or bad positions. PFF would have no idea about that.
I would think that is taken into account but I get your point. Same can be said for middle linebacker and quarterback; still they are rated.

Tavierre Thomas seems to be coming long as I expected. I think he will make a good nickel cornerback.

With Fant logging a full practice yesterday and Tunsil back at practice I am expecting the same lineup configuration against the Colts.

I hope the communication issues can be sorted out a little bit more with some practice time together this week. I’d like to see Slowik simplify things to help them get in a groove. That means run the ball! Much easier for OL to fire off the ball and be decisive/attacking than it is dropping back into pass sets reacting to the defense.

Sorting out the communication issues would be great, but that doesn't fix the lack of talent the backups have.

Most definitely but after watching the game a lot of times CJ had a clean pocket to operate in. A lot of the pressure being given up was because of piss poor communication between the boys up front. And that was to be expected because like you said they were backups. And some were backups to the backups.

And even if we had the starters playing the defense still would’ve won their share of the work in the trenches.

OK. So. If the Depth Chart is to be believed and if Tunsil is out, then our OL looks like this...

Fant - Patterson - Green - Mason - Jones

This... frightens me. After how he looked in the pre-season, I never wanted to see Fant at LT again in my life.

So apparently this is wrong. Instead we can expect:

Jones - Patterson - Green - Mason - Fant

Although Patterson and Green might get swapped there.

Im confused on the Patterson Green switch...did Patterson not come in and play C for scruggs, and green not at LG last game??? why the constant shuffle...ugh we are gonna get someone killed.
You and I both.
Maybe they want more experience?
Maybe some of the free rushers from the last game was a communication problem?

Last week, Patterson came in and played C for Scruggs. Green was NOT at LG last game. Kenyon Green went to IR and Kendrick Green, who'd just been acquired, didn't play. Our LG was Josh Jones.

If Tunsil is out, the rumor is that they're moving Josh Jones out to LT and leaving Fant at RT.

When Fant went out last week, they played around with Dieter and Jones. They initially had Dieter at RT for some reason that could only have been a mistake. That one play ended up in Stroud getting strip sacked. They immediately swapped those guys out, putting Dieter at LG and Jones at RT.

But, to the best of my knowledge, Dieter is back on the practice squad and has not been called up. Instead, they called up Deculus who is probably our backup T for this game, and he could easily get playing time because Fant was injured with a stinger last week.

According to the depth chart, the next LG up is Patterson. Kendrick Green is not listed at LG at this point from what I can see, and he was seen practicing at C last week. He's got more experience than Patterson and might be better at calling the line shifts.

And that's why I shifted Patterson out to LG and stuck Kendrick Green in at C. With that said, I would not be surprised if the depth chart is misleading and they kept Patterson at C and put Kendrick at LG. I would also not be surprised to see them call up Dieter to play LG, but I haven't seen that reported, yet.

Jones - (Patterson/Green/Dieter) - (Patterson/Green) - Mason - Fant

I hope that makes sense.
