I love mobile QB'S as long as they can do both. How many QB'S with elite running skills have won Super Bowls? Steve Young? I don't remember.
I don't know that it really matters what the NFL or fans would prefer. Most colleges are using running/mobile QBs more & more so every year the pool of the pure pocket passer shrinks. Just going by the numbers alone means that every year there will be fewer of them to choose from.

Plus all the rule changes really favor the running QB. 15 to 20 years ago someone like Lamar Jackson would have probably been dead or crippled after one or two seasons. Look at Randall Cunningham and how many games he missed because of injuries.

Randall Cunningham only missed 4 starts in his first 4 seasons as a starter (60/64 starts). Lamar Jackson has missed 10 starts the last 2 seasons including a playoff game. Just saying, Lamar is off to a way worse start injury wise.

Burrow just recently was hoping not to make you wrong.
Wait. I’m not sure I get the point. In another thread, I was the first person to post the video of Burrow getting injured.

In this thread, running QBs were mentioned and I asked when was the last time a running QB got injured while…..running.

Does anyone consider Burrow a running QB? If Matt Schaub rolls out, does that make him a running QB?

Joe Burrow classified as a 'running QB' pretty much makes the term pointless..

For the most part yes. But, he has a little Brady trick. He picks up a few yards if he runs. Much like Brady use to do if a play broke down. He also tries to run forward, toward a sideline. My guess is that he knows, as Brady did, he is not going to out run a DB. So, he gets say 2 yards and then scoots out of bounds. He is mobile in the pocket to a degree. Just never confuse him as fast or elusive if he tries to run.

Been hearing some unfortunate things about Stroud's performance during training camp for what that's worth. Hopefully he can figure that out
Been up and down. Had his worst day today. Over in the training camp thread, zshawn10 has been posting camp observations from a Cody Stoops. Using some kind of sports scoring system, he has Stroud "winning" 2 practices; Mills winning 1; and with 2 ties.

I'm not going to worry about the Stroud vs. Mills stuff. If it's the 4th or 5th game and Mills is still starting because Stroud can't get his **** together, then I'll worry.

...just curious, are you really worried if the Texans are winning or have a winning record at WK5?

It will be much easier for everyone when the fact is accepted that CJ Stroud is going to struggle this year. That's just how the world works. Outside of the outliers of course, which are few and far between. He's a rookie. He WILL make mistakes.

Learning the game and getting better over the course of the season are what it's about this year.

While true Caserio has made this very tough to accept by trading away our pick instead of the Browns. Feels like we bet a lot on Stroud being able to provide at least serviceable QB play this year

Bet on yourself to be better.

You would be a laughing stock to the team not to trade away another pick.

And the Browns aren’t a lock. They have lost talented players, Chubb is a year older with more wear and tear. The HC is on the hot seat. Their QB may not return to form. Their #1 WR has been in the NFL for 7 years. Browns play in a tougher division.

I don’t know why more people don’t see this.

I mean it sounds nice to say bet on yourself but the odds are that the Browns will end with more wins than us. Chubb is still just 27 years old and he didn't slow down last year and I don't think their HC being on the hot seat is going to cause them to lose any games. They have a good roster and it really depends on how Watson plays. If he can play at even 80% of what he used to be then they're probably gonna win 10 games. It helps they are in a tougher division but still.

DeMeco has said the starter will have to win the job. If Stroud struggles, he may not start. So far, he and DM are head to head.

Head to head according to who?
And let's not forget Mills is in his 3rd camp, Stroud his first.
This is important. Mills has a better understanding of the speed of the game. Bryce Young is reported to have thrown an interception in his last four practices. I wouldn’t be concerned if I was a Panther fan. It’s like getting your first drivers license in high school. There is a lot of interceptions of other cars, curbs and cops before you start to get it.

Betting on yourself isn’t just for a saying. It has a psychological effect.

The RB position has been devalued for a reason. Chubb is at the age and has had the carries that wears down RBs. Just because it didn’t show last year he still carried a load that wears down RBs.

Watson at 80% isn’t going to be good enough. Watson in his last year had a pretty good year and still only managed 4 wins.

Agree to disagree. And that’s ok.

RB's are wearing out sooner b/c offensive schemes do not include a blocking FB to lead the way. RB's in general are doing both jobs on a regular basis which now includes more impacts. I hope the Texans utilize their FB to help Pierce.

Year one you take a QB. In subsequent years you obtain pieces to put around them. Barring a total collapse (Jamarcus Russell) we probably won't be able to render a verdict on Young, Stroud, Richardson, and Levis until next season.

Plus the Texans defense is going to be really good. IMHO

Yr 2 1/2 or yr 3.

So far both QB's have looked very underwhelming, or so I understand. I do support their decision to not name a starter and to make one of them earn it. I wouldn't be disappointed to see Stroud play well but for Mills to be lights-out.

It would be incredibly difficult for the Texans to not go with Stroud as the future. But we need DM to perform well, maybe even start the season, to increase his trade value.

its been ONE WEEK of TC. CJ has been up and down. So. You know what I’d worry about. If Stroud couldn’t buy a sideline completion at this point. Mills never could, never has. Stroud has proven he can make all the throws. The field is limited for Mills with sideline routes taken away. CJ makes money throws there. It’s a matter of getting in sync with a new offense and many new faces, many rookies. It’s going to be choppy but that is football.

Wasn't one of the best throws of TC, certainly the best throw Tuesday, a sideline throw, Mills to Collins?

He’s a back up at best. Teams needing a quarterback will draft one. You’re not getting a 2nd or early 3rd for a backup quarterback.
Pipe dream
At this point we really don't know. Just like we shouldn't be negative about Stroud's future, we shouldn't be negative about Mills. No reason to tear these young men down.

Mills came into a bad situation very inexperienced. He's still developing.

Cj is our QB. I'm down with that. As a Texans fan I want to recoup that 3rd round pick I didn't want to use. That's it.

Daniel Jones was considered a bust until last season. Tua Tagovailoa was considered a bust until last year when he was in the MVP conversation.

Mills had a lot less experience than they did coming into the league.

All I'm saying is we don't know what Mills is going to be. I hope Slowick & DeMeco can make him something

Can you imagine the MB of the team that trades a 2nd or a 3rd for Mills? :brando:
Thinking about this question. In the Schaub trade, the Texans flip-flop first-round picks in the 2008 draft with Atlanta and gave them second-round picks in 2007 and 2008. At that point in his career, Schaub had started two NFL games and thrown 6 TDs and 6 INTs. Arguably, at the same points in their careers, Mills has been more productive than Schaub.

Have I made a convincing case for someone to trade for Mills? All joking aside, I know his career didn't end like we expected, but Kubiak and Smith did a good job identifying Schaub as their QB to build around.

I and another poster (TexanMike) were actually pimping for Matt Schaub on the board before the Texans made the trade.
