Davis Mills getting no respect

I still need more evidence but I think my post during the off season is still valid. I see Davis Mills as a quarterback who might get us to the first round of the playoffs with a somewhat better team. I did not see him getting us to the Super Bowl unless we can select Superstars in the next two drafts.
Not giving up on Pierce but we definitely need a star running back in some round if he is not the guy that I thought. Also in my opinion we need more touchdowns from Brandin Cooks rather than thousand yard seasons. A average salary cap for 2023 and 2024 of 25 million is way too much. We need a significant wide receiver across from him. It is obvious that we need another Edge rusher as rasheem green cannot get on the field and on the field Jonathan Greenard was not impressive. It is only one game but are two starting Corners look sufficient but I think we're going to need at least one more in the next two drafts.

As interesting will be how car stereo decides to spend the $50 million in cap space next year. If a revenge-minded Russell Wilson could not defeat his previous Seahawks who most have predicted to be in the bottom three of wins can we defeat him. Same 8.5 point spread we had game 1. My focus this year is not so much on the Ws but on significant productivity Improvement. I was okay with the positions drafted in round 1 this year but the next two drafts have to be Playmakers and preferably Point producers. The good news is we should be able to get that in 2023.

When Mills was drafted I figured his ceiling is good Schaub. As we know Schaub was a solid bottom of the top 10 QB at his best. But at his best was having a top RB, WR 1 and OL which is not a guarantee that Mills will have (though they have the ammo to acquire it if they get lucky).

I am concerned that Nico’s ceiling is Kevin Walter. I don’t want a WR2 that you can only count on for 50-60 catches and 600-800 yards/season. I want to see Nico win his matchups and force defenses to account for him. His 2-3 catches a game isn’t going to do that. He’s not Will Fuller who can burn you anytime. He has to be doubling and occasionally tripling his current output.

Right now Cooks is the only target on this offense that teams have to account for… and he’s no Andre Johnson.

I am hopeful that car stereo is putting together a masterful plan for the off-season to come while figuring out who on the current roster will be here for the future. I believe we will continue to see shuffling especially on the lower end of the roster and the practice squad.

So that = Superstar? At best, you can call Mills' performance uneven. When he has time, Mills can read the defense and deliver. When Mills is pressured or the play breaks down, he can't make off scheduled plays. That's what we're waiting for. Can Mills be more than a paint by numbers QB.

I would say Mills had an uneven day. He was great throwing inside the hashes and inconsistent to bad throwing outside the hashes. We don't know if he can make off schedule plays or not. He did make off schedule plays last year against the Pats/Chargers. He's actually pretty accurate throwing on the run outside the pocket. I want to see more designed rollouts/boots in the offense because I believe this plays to Mills strengths, rather than having him sit back in the pocket constantly and throwing outside the numbers. Mills has the arm strength but he definitely needs to improve his accuracy outside the numbers. Finding another wr like Cooks that can get separation and a threat at TE wouldn't hurt a bit either.
 
If anyone knows anything about QB play, Mills throws to the sidelines showed a QB that was too amped. Whether that was from 1st game jitters, excitement, nervousness, or whatever, it doesn't mean he can't make the throws. It simply means, for some reason, Mills couldn't calm down enough to make those throws. Trying too hard maybe? Too much adrenaline can really screw things up. I'm sure Mills has heard what everyone has been saying about him, and was just trying really hard to prove himself. From this point on, he just needs to put that all aside, and play his game. I've seen Hall of Fame QB's have the same kind of problems in games before. Some were able to calm down pretty quick, but some took a little longer. The question now is, can Mills control his nerves, and do what I believe he is capable of doing?

I'm waiting for him to "figure out" defenses & exploit weaknesses. I don't think he'll ever be Peyton Manning. He doesn't have Manning's gifts. But the difference between Manning & Leaf, or Rivers, or Stafford is that you couldn't fool him too long. & if you did it was an extraordinary effort.

I don't think Mills will ever be Aaron Rodgers. Which is the vein of the "new" NFL QB & his physical traits are a big part of his game. Mills is going to have to develop along the old school Tom Brady, Matt Ryan path and learn to manipulate the numbers.

This entire team but specifically Davis Mills should have a tremendous boost in confidence and excitement facing denver.

Pat Hamilton needs to put Hairston in front of meals more often.

Go look at the Pats and Chargers games last year and tell me he can't throw outside the numbers, were I really want him to learn is to trust his TE down the seam and make the TE the 2nd read after Cooks, then you will see great improvement. Will it happen? Who knows, but the talent is there for a Matt Ryan type career.

I don't know if you're speaking in hyperbole, I know you know better.

The second read is based on the play call & what the defense is doing.

It's not like he decides to look at Cooks first, then Burkhead.

Did you hear the interview with Oj Howard talking about those two TDs. He said they identified a particular defender & how he does a certain thing, every time in a particular situation; the play called & the defense they were in. Every time they caught the defense in that look when they had a particular concept called, they took advantage of it. Oj was the first read on those plays when the defense was in that particular look.
 
Last year when Mills first came in he looked awful. Then he took a few games to be backup before being inserted back into the starting lineup. Given time to absorb the game after catching live action he looked way better.

This season through two games he looks ultra conservative. Like he doesn't trust his teammates to make a play in a contested catch situation. It's like if he feels there's a chance he'll turn the ball over he wont give anyone a chance at the ball. I hope he snaps out of it and looks much improved going forward but so far that overly conservative style of play is making him and his teammates look like they need to be upgraded next offseason. Give them a chance to make a play. Win some and lose some. Learn.

Based on his accuracy issues, I can see why. He is struggling to put the ball in a good spot consistently, so he is waiting for the guys to be wide open before he throws.
 
I was never fooled by the Mills hype. At his best, he is Mitch Trubisky. Maybe that’s good enough for some, but it isn’t for me.
 
meh....so what? It's not as if he's been a waste of a 3rd round pick. And for now, he's all we got.

And we still got all those upcoming 1st round picks to spend on someone.

The whole offense is learning a new offense.

I would have loved DM to have showed out. But I’ll take him not throwing an INT against a good defense on the road.

We saw a poor offense against a good defense today & Davis Mills making good decisions overall on a bad offense. The lack of receiving talent we talked about for the last 18 months, it’s still there. Yes, he missed a couple of easy throws he should have made. But only a couple. He also made some really good throws that should have been caught & a couple of good ones despite the bad situation he was in that should have been caught.

We also saw our defense, not as good as Denver’s play well against a “new” offense dealing with health issues.

He’s good enough until we’re only replacing one member of the offensive line in an off-season.

We have a new LG, a new RG, basically a new RT, & now a new Center

That’s 4 out of 5.

You don’t put a Trey Lance behind that. You don’t draft a Trevor Lawrence to put behind that line. & you don’t want a CJStroud playing under Center with that kind of OHaul.

You draft someone in the third round & hope he doesn’t lose games.

If the expectation of that round three is to be the future and he isn't it is a lot of "what". As far as the picks the name QBs played middle school teams Saturday:

Stroud looked great against wait for it Toledo and he has Mulugheta as agent. He looked so so vs Notre Dame #5.

Heisman winner Young little less great with 2 INTs at... University of Monroe (who?). He also had to eak out a win against Longhorns.

Will Levis again good stats except 2 TD and 2 Interceptions against -- at least I 've heard of Youngstown State!

I have moved my QB hopes to Caleb Williams in 2024 but to be fair great stats against nobodies. I cannot accept these teams loading in so many TP teams to pad stats and get a check.

Health. If you are unaware of his injury history I suggest you review. I have posted extensively on it and CnnnD has also. Both ankles IIRC have had "tight rope" surgery. I took a few and found following. well worth a read even if not a Tua fan and Eagles Jalen Hurts had same surgery.

Really you posted a fact and some posters get butt hurt because you call out the BS. At this point nobody is an expert on players in the next draft. Not even NFL FO's. They're still in information gathering mode.

It's fun to watch college football. But nobody knows if say Caleb Williams will be available when the Texans pick in 2 yrs. Much less the talent and how the scouts will view next yrs draft talent crop and if they cant evaluate talent for the next yrs draft. I feel quite certain your just p!ss!ng in the wind.

and yet you keep reading, liking and posting in my mocks and others. snicker. No one claiming to be expert but NFL FOs are evaluating future players and evaluating when other teams will pick and who. Mock drafts are everywhere with opinions from reputable sources like SI, Sportsnaught, DraftKings, Drafttek, CBSsports, Tankathon and many others. You and JB just like to take shots. Is your brown sack lunch packed for elementary tomorrow?

The throw to Cooks in the end zone…the one he missed, was a good throw. Cooks has to make that catch. It was low but he had to throw it there

I don't know why you're getting so upset. I never said that you were ludicrous. The idea of determining what anyone will be in January by seeing a couple of weeks in September is ludicrous. Much like Trey Lance and a few others their season could end tomorrow. Or like Arian Foster, the first couple weeks might suck in what turns out to be a pro-bowl season. You like to infect all threads and that's ok. Just don't get upset that not all agree with you and point out facts you may disagree with. And the fact I stated is not my fact or your fact, it's simply a fact whether you agree with it or not

you quoted me. No one is determining what a player will be in future yet this board is full of comments about players futures with Texans like Stingley and Mills after two games. Whether I agree or not they give their opinions. As to college players and their future it is an avenue of entertainment I and many others enjoy but you cannot leave it alone. As with the several times you reply to someone incorrectly naming someone when you know who they are referring to. You say it is a fact to evaluate [my word] how a player could do is ludicrous but to me your "fact" is subjective and not one I accept.

I doubt you can say anything that would upset me as you just don't matter. As you say you're just an "old curmudgeon".
